PlayStation File System Libraries - Add NTFS Support to your Homebrew!

Submitted by greg; February 23, 2011

I'm out of town leaving me PS3-less, so I'm unable to test this... This being a library, PlayStation File System Libraries -- libpfsm, that you can use when building your homebrew projects, i.e.) Gaia Manager. And the Gaia Manager source is included and comes pre-modified as an example adding NTFS (libpfsm) support. You just need to build it now and I'm sure someone'll do that real soon. What does PlayStation File System Libraries feature?
  • Support for multiple simultaneously connected devices.
  • Hot swapping of devices.
  • Support for multiple partitions (with different FS).
  • NTFS support
    • Alternate data streams
    • Sparse files
    • File compression
    • B+ trees directory
  • FAT support
    • FAT12, FAT16, FAT32
    • Long file names (VFAT)
Writing to NTFS formatted volumes is not supported and not planned. Check the README for everything else. Download: PlayStation File System Libraries Thanks to... I'll never tell. The author wishes to remain anonymous. Cheers!

DONT KNOW IF THIS WORKS OR NOT but it looks like it might
**BTW: THE CHANCE OF AUTO BRICKER 3.56 WORKING IS 25% IT ALL DEPENDS ON WHAT MODEL OF PS3 YOU HAVE**
**BTW Again, Please Don't PM ME Or Post A Comment Saying "It Doesn't Work or Please Help Me."Just Follow The Tutorial And If It Doesn't Work, Then You're Out Of Luck**

Click Click Boom! here, releasing a tutorial on how to downgrade your PS3 on 3.56 OFW. This is a very easy process. This may take you 10 to 30 minutes to complete.

what you will need is:

-Winrar on your PC or mac
-These downloads that I will provide at the bottom of this thread.
-A PS3 on 3.56 OFW
-A brain

BTW: This will not cause The Yellow Light of Hell(or Death)

Just some advice, I would consider making a back up if you don't want to lose anything.

Steps:

Auto Brick Method

1. First you have to be auto brick you PS3 to install any FW. So you are going to get the .PUP fill that I provide at the bottom were the downloads are.

2. Download the file and rename it PS3UPDAT.PUP.

3. You put the file in a series of files. Like so PS3>UPDATE>Then the .PUP file goes in here.

4. Place the USB in the USB port closest to the Disc Drive(Far Right).

5. Go to the system update selection on your home menu. Click via Media Storage Device. Then install it.

6. Your PS3 will now be bricked. You are now entering the seconded part of this procedure.

or

For people who can't get the auto brick working, there is another way. First go to system update via internet. There is going to be another 3.56 update. Update it, then at 10% of INSTALLING, yank the cord from the back you(power cord). This should work 100%.

These should happen and it means you PS3 is bricked:
It will have a black screen.
Doesn't do anything.

Installing Files to Downgrade

1. Format a USB device to fat32. Make sure their is nothing on the USB device, or this will not work. Extract the lv2 file from folder 1, and place it on your USB device along with the Firmware you chose.(**Place these to the route of your USB with no other files. Just these two files. The Lv2 file 1 and the FW you selected.**)

Part 1 of Downgrade

2. Insert your USB device into the Right-Most USB port on your PS3. (Closest to the Disc Drive) Turn your PS3 on, and your screen will be black. Wait for a little bit, and your PS3 will turn itself off. If it fails to turn off within 25 minutes, turn it off manually.

Part 2 of Downgrade

1. Turn your PS3 back on, and you'll see the recovery menu. Once you know you see the recovery menu, go ahead and turn your PS3 off. Now, unplug the USB device from the PS3, and insert it into the USB port onto your PC. Erase everything off of your USB. Extract the lv2 file from folder 2 and place it on your root of your USB device.(**Onto the route of the USB. No other files. Just the Lv2 file 2. Only that one!**)

2. Insert your USB device back into the Right-Most USB port. Now, turn your PS3 on, it will be unbricked with the firmware you chose.

Big thanks goes to EnVy_AsTrO on another forum for the downloads and the 3.56 auto brick.
And

Am I missing something obvious here? If NTFS write is not supported how will this change B.U.M.s any? Unless the content is backed up to a fat 32 drive with "split files" then those files are joined and copied to the NTFS drive

maybe it means that writing directly from the ps3 is not supported, but you can connect the ntfs hdd to your pc and write your backups

maybe instead of fat32, its going to be ntfs which increases the amount of space of the drive causing more games to be put in the external hard drive.
which would be nice and very useful!!

The PS3 doesn't just read fat32. It reads exFAT. I have an external harddrive with 500GB space formatted to exFAT. But from what Anonymous is saying, there won't be write support for NTFS, just read, I guess. I'm not at a imputed so I can't see if he included the source code.

From psx-scene

UPDATE:

Don't go re-formatting your external USB hard drives just let, even tho Gaia Manager is included with NTFS support, it does not give you 100% way to run those 4gb+ games, this library also has to be included in a new CFW for your PS3 console to give the game read support during game play, but it does allow you to directly backup those large games to your external HDD, and directly copy them from external HDD to internal to play them!

Here's me being completely skeptical. I just looked up this auto bricker and it apparently has been talked about for weeks. How can this possibly be true and NOBODY mentioned this on any of the big forums like psx-scene? And also, why hasn't Mathieulh talked about this? From what we have hard evidence about it that 3.56 can get put in service mode, but it gets stuck there - no downgrading.

Again, that's just me being COMPLETELY skeptical. Until there's video proof showing a PS3 on 3.56, unable to run homebrew, downgrading to 3.55 or whatever other firmware, this just needs to get tossed.

Just being skeptical, and saving slow-thinkers their PS3. Nothing towards you.

I read that it only works for 3.55 and below, but why do this on 3.55 or below if there's already a downgrade using service mode. 3.56 doesn't even have lv2 syscalls yet, seeing as how they can't even get out of service mode for it. Just thinking, not worth it. Anyone on 3.56 should just stay there and enjoy PSN until we get valid proof about this, if ever.

... No. The PS3 does not support exFAT. exFAT is a proprietary Microsoft file system. Sony will likely never add support for it, just as they never added support for NTFS.

It does support exFAT. I have a lot of my backed up games on my exFAT drive, using multiMAN. The PS3 reads FAT in general. Not FAT32 specifically. I've even backed up my PS3 from system settings and the PS3 recognized it.
