Open Source PS JailBreak Clone PSGroove Available Now!

Submitted by greg; August 31, 2010

Updates at the bottom... Maybe, it's a possibility, perhaps, conceivably it could happen next week, but that's just speculation; in other words, nothing is set in stone. Mathieulh and the crew are working on it and the plan: bring the PS JailBreak code to github so others can contribute. And with that code compiled one could even flash it to a Teensy++ USB Development Board ($24) or an AT90USBKEY ($31). Yessir -- a do-it-yourself PS3 hack without breaking the bank -- that's what I'm talking about. If you're thinking about the Teensy++ board you may want to act fast. From their website:
Update, Tuesday, Aug 31, 5:41 PM: We have received a higher than usual volume of orders for this item, and we're working to ship orders as quickly as possible. Current wait time is approximately 2 days. As of Tuesday 5:41PM these boards ARE IN STOCK. We have enough inventory to fill all pending orders! If we do run out due to high demand, we expect to have more available in approximately 2 weeks, and we will fill any backorders in the order they were received. If you want one of these boards, your best bet is to place an order now. Please understand PJRC is a small company and we are currently running about 2 days to fill orders, though we're hoping to fully catch up soon!
I hope everyone understands too: PS JailBreak isn't just about backups, in fact, that's not even its actual purpose. "PS JailBreak" means unsigned code on the PS3, and that means emulators and other real cool shit. We'll keep you updated -- Twitter too. Update: I just ordered 10 of these Teensy++ boards. One for me and the rest we're going to give away in an upcoming contest. Check back for that. Update: Cloned and open-sourced before distributors get their overpriced versions out. That's right, all the code that makes PS JailBreak what it is, is now up for grabs. Take a look right here. What next? Get yourself a Teensy++ board and get your PSGroove on. Documentation, guides, how-tos, etc. will follow. From the PSGroove README:
This is the PSGroove, an open-source reimplementation of the psjailbreak exploit for AT90USB and related microcontrollers. It should work on:
  • AT90USB162
  • AT90USB646
  • AT90USB647
  • AT90USB1286
  • AT90USB1287
  • ATMEGA32U4
  • ...and maybe more.
This software is not intended to enable piracy, and such features have been disabled. This software is intended to allow the execution of unsigned third-party apps and games on the PS3.
Read the full README. And if you're not already, get following Mathieulh and RichDevX. Two devs behind PSGroove. Update: I've compiled PSGroove for you -- grab it right here. This is the version without Backup Manager support, and it goes untested. When our boards arrive and we're able to test, we'll write up a user-friendly tutorial for you. Update: Someone just emailed in a modified "descriptor.h" that apparently enables Backup Manager support. I've compiled and added that hex file to this archive. Update: I've added PS JailBreak's Backup Manager to our PS3 downloads -- it's the app that allows you to create & load PS3 backups. Install using PS JailBreak or the version of PSGroove that supports it. Update: If you haven't already noticed, PJRC is sold out of Teensy++ boards. What did you expect? But! If you have a [hacked] PSP then you're laughing because Mathieulh has confirmed that this code can, and likely will, be ported to the PSP. Hacking your PS3 with your hacked PSP -- who would've thought. Update: No PSP? Didn't get to order a Teensy++ board early enough? Don't stress it -- because like I said above we ordered 10 and that means we have 9 to giveaway. Want one? Shits real simple... Follow us on Twitter and retweet (RT) this tweet. First 9 to do that and email admin at dashhacks with a dot com confirming your twitter name get 'em. P.S. Like Dashhacks on Facebook too. Update: And they're gone... All 9 Teensy++ boards are claimed. Thanks for playing. If you don't get a response it means you were too late, sorry. Update: These BlackcatUSB boards work too. - source: ps3wiki.lan.st | psgroove (source code @ github)

FUCK YEA !!

Imagine this though, and correct me if its possible.. If the code ks released, what if someone made a homebrew app that acted just like the teensy++ board and actually used the PSP to hack the ps3! Could that be possible ?

I'm not sure how possible that would be, if I'm not mistaken the hack is done via a buffer overflow caused by the extra pins in the usb stick. An adapter may be creatable, but I'm really not sure.

I had a quick look through psgroove.c and I dont see anything in regards to mounting devices on the PS3, its just the USB exploit. Downloading the package from oz might actually enable piracy.

I wonder if this will eventually enable Custom Firmware, like the PSP...
Then we would only have to use the stick once, to enable CFirmware installation, and have the game menu built-in from there... along with all the great homebrew

# Officer yoass 2010-09-01 01:32
Once you have the teensy ready how would you put homebrew onto it if the pc won't recognise it? Also as they said this can run unassigned code what's to spot people using the backup manager from psjailbreak site or making boot loaders?

"This software is not intended to enable piracy, and such features have been disabled. This software is intended to allow the execution of unsigned third-party apps and games on the PS3."

Really? Did they really do that? Will this actually produce an almost identical effect to the PS Jailbreak dongle, minus the ability to backup games?

It would take at least one year for this technology to get in my stupid country Romania. I only hope the psp thing actually works so I can do it myself at home.
How is that possible?
You make a psp program and compile that special code in it and run it while the psp is connected to the ps3 usb ? I wonder if you need to keep the psp open like all the time when you play backups on the ps3, not that it would be a problem...
Thanks for the news!

I LOVE IT!!!
Even though I don't support software piracy, I think in this case I can even look the other way. Those were really f***ed up stunts sony pulled throughout the last year starting with pulling OtherOS support!
Now they got what they deserved for behaving as they did. I think they have done a great job creating a safe system which was unhacked for over 4 years. They won against all other console creators!
But now... it's time for them to move on to the creaton of the PS4!
Anyways... I love this win, and all that it stands for!

and for the 90% of us that are lamens, what do we do with a bunch of 0s and x's? :P

Anyways great to see someone released the code as well as someone releasing a patch to remove the patch which disables the backup features. Not nice of those guys to patch it in the first place.

psjailbreak are probably really pissed off with this release people can download and buy the thin for less than $30 now. But remember you wont get support for it, i.e when they release an update for the dongle they may make it harder to clone.
Though it may be better these usb dev boards as someone posted on another topic, the psj dongle can be updated but requires another piece of hardware, hardware that psj have not mentioned on their site, and if so will increase the cost of buying their dongle.

So its either buying a usb dev board or waiting to see if someone ports this to the psp which would be an even greater.

dont know if I should but a dev board now or not, as with the increase demand on these boards they could most likely add upto an extra $10 on them.

PS Jailbreak Port To PSP *UPDATE*
okay..so far here is what i accomplished...
The main in the psgroove source code compiles a Hex (hexi-decimal) binary file. The PSP has a built in hexidecimal reader. Cwcheat implements this reader to apply codes to games. The PSP also has an alternative open source driver...PSP Type "B". If i can find a way to implement the cwcheat reader to apply the compiled hex to the psp system itself within a homebrew application, and use the type B driver as a USB simulating dfu mode (to access the bootloader), i may be able to use it as a dongle...just a thouht...

This is good news, congrats to all the people have worked on the reverse engineering, and to the original team who discovered the original expolit/Hole. Its just a case of waiting for a port to iDevices, TI Calc and PSP now, or going down the route buying teeensy...etc. Now hopefully someone can find a software hole in the gameOS's LV2 access thats available to homebrew running with the jailbreak and hopefully get lv1 access!!

Cos not only does the PS3 have to read from it, it also has to receive a reply from it. Normal memory cards can only be read, they cannot send anything, which is why you need something with a controller chip.

@James Well, piracy wouldn't be my only reason. The fact to be able to play games from the HD is cool cause some of the games have terrible load times. As far as piracy I would probably only do it for import games that cost like 90 dollars to get a hold of, like A.C.E.:R.

Download a copy of the source code whether you know how to use it or not. Download a compiled copy whether you know how to use it or not. Upload a few backups of it if you can or source it as a torrent. We want this thing to spread like wildfire to get well beyond the point where $ony can do anything to stop it. The more wild copies at large in the field the less the power of anyone to interviene!

As for pirate games, I dont want to buy a massive hard drive to store games and a blu ray writer is even more out of the question. I dont want to see the ps3 end up like the psp with rubbish games and updates every 2-3 days

@lee

It'll backup the games easily but the games are composed of separate files on them, so all long as there isn't a file bigger than 4GB within the game image, then it'll be able to backup.

Bought 1 AT90USB646-MUAtmel
MCU 8-Bit 90USB AVR RISC 64KB Flash 3.3V/5V 64-Pin QFN EP

Anyone know of a site that can teach you how to create a board using this chip? I bought it thinking it included board. Turns out it's just an IC.

Hopefully someone will figure out a way to disaple the need of firmware update via game software, which will be needed for said game to be played.

Hopefully we'll still be able to the rip the game to an extrnal HDD first, which the will allow the game to be pacthed to kill the firmware update found with-in the game.

I'm not concerned about playing on-line. Backs up are going to be awesome, but I'm really looking forward to seeing what home-brew comes about.

Hello, - found this web site by pure luck whilst roaming across the web this morning, and happy that i did! I do like the layout and different shades, but I ought to say that I'm having issues when it loads. I'm using Classilla 9 internet browser for mac, and the menu wouldn't line up correctly. i'm convinced used an identical design on a customer's web-site, but the menu seems O.k on mine. I imagine the problem is at my end and perhaps it's the perfect time to upgrade! That apart i like this article and also the site on the whole. I wish you all the best in your future endeavours. Genuinely is one website I am going to be bookmarking to revisit.Till We meet again.

Obviously, the industry doesn’t give people like you and me enough credit for our common sense.

Hai, Im very new to the forum.
I wonder if I placed this question acceptably. If it is wrong, please let me know.

Ive found numerous jailbreak for ps3 online but then they were not for ps3 firmware 3.55. And Firmware 3.55 is the official ps3 firmware I have. I have found a website which empowers you to do a jailbreak playstation 3 3.55 slim or jailbreak playstation 3 3.55 fat.

Did somebody buy jailbreak ps3 on that website? Ive heard wonderful things for example you can unlock and jailbreak playstation 3 from firmware 1.90 to firmware 3.55. If you have a ps3 with official fw 3.55 or less you can definitely jailbreak your playstation 3 with the site. www.jbmyps3.com appears like a splendid website. Playstation 3 jailbreak buy is costs less than buying extra games for ps3. Do you think I should buy this ps3 jailbreak? Does anyone know if the jailbreak for the ps3 is with firmware from Kmeaw or other custom firmware?
Okay, I feel I should to buy ps3 jailbreak. A lot less expensive than buying playstation 3 games every time :).

I am very greatful
