Does anyone know if there is a limit on size of hard drives that can be accessed by a PS3? I tried connecting a 1 Tb drive, but PS3 doesn't recognise it. But a 500 Mb drive i had it does recognise.

All harddrives now are pre formatted in ntfs and ps3 dont know what ntfs is unless you use ntfs driver with multiman.

I am a Mac user so this may not be of total help, but I encode all of my video files to PS3 compatible mp4 format with HandBrake. It works wonders. I can set the filesize limit to 4gb and if I'm using a good video source I am hard pressed to tell a quality difference in terms of audio and video. I generally start with a large mkv file or, better yet, make my own mkv from my own discs. The trick with re-encoding any video is to to be patient. On Handbrake you can do a sloppy one-pass encode or click 2-pass encoding. ALWAYS go for the 2 pass. It makes everything looks so much better, especially during scenes with a lot of motion. I tried many file splitting apps first and was unhappy with all of them. You could always try to make the movie file many parts by editing it with Quicktime.

1TB for internal is the MAX and 2TB for external is the MAX for now.

When connecting larger drives be sure they are getting enough power. I have 3 2TB drives plugged into my PS3 and they all require external power (their own dedicated outlet) and will not run off of the PS3's own power supply. I've had four drives plugged in at once and all worked well, just as it would if you plugged them all into a PC.
