KaKaRoTo on PL3 & The Payload Mess

Submitted by greg; October 16, 2010

KaKaRoTo sheds some light on the mess of payloads that currently litter the PS3 scene. In a quick summary of KaKaRoTo's professional opinion: Hermes' payload sucks; syscall 35 is in, syscall 36 is out (for good reason too); peek & poke isn't necessary, leave the kernel patching to the payloads. All in all: PL3 is the answer. Why? PL3 includes everything you need -- Game Updates, PSN Package Support, Disc-less Backups, Firmware 3.01, 3.10, and 3.15 Support -- and most importantly it's done properly. I encourage you check out KaKaRoTo's full article right here; it's an interesting read. A couple other things to note: You need Gaia Manager to take advantage of syscall 35. And if you want to compile PSGroove with KaKaRoTo's PL3 yourself, then follow this tutorial (for Mac). Otherwise download these precompiled hex files for Teensy & Teensy++ 1.0 & 2.0, Blackcat, OpenKubus, XPLAIN, Olimex, Benito, Minimus v1, AT90USBKEY, and USBTINYMKII. Update: As per this tweet I've updated the download to include the latest.

Well at least this has come to light, I don't think I want anything to do with Hermes' creations any longer.

Well thats good news. But i take maybe there use this as getting a CFW going. I have question tho. How hard would be to open up the new firmware version after you download it and like take all the stuff that was added out but still make it say firmware 3.42+? Cant you like delete that line or make it skip it?

using PL3 with teensy 2.0 and Gaia manager, i cannot run any games without a disc. I have hit L1 to switch option to disc less. game just hangs at black screen when loading. didnt have same issue with hermes 3.0 and Open Manager 1.5 except with a couple games...

Who is this guy?, and why does he have to attack a fellow dev like Hermes?, this is the kinda thing that causes scene splits.

Don't hate Hermes. His contributions were appreciated in this scene while they lasted. IMO the more Hackers the more likely someone will figure something out that the other didn't and likewise. Although this news is not good news of his departure, there is still hope within PL3. I personally would rather see what both syscalls had to offer in terms of loopholes. But.... life goes on and so does my Minimus v1. Damn, first DarKAleX,then Geohot now Hermes. First they love you then they hate you then when they have no one to compile for them they cry about how they wish you were here.

BTW, I'm assuming Minimus V1 refers to the 16kb version (duh, right?)

Does this included Hex have the Blue led fix?

Why did hermes release v4 after he supposedly quit the scene? According to KaKaRoTos, his payload sucks.

BEAT IT HERMES!

Will give it a try and hopefully backups will really work without a disc this time ^^

BTW, if someone can explain to me what is the real benefit to use gaia manager over open manager 1.16, i'd be grateful.
ATM, i use open manager 1.16, copy on internal hdd using ftp.
Open manager is rusty, ugly but i don't care.
What's the gain to use gaia ?

Thx

Form the surface it does look like this is better than the Hermes payload. However, bashing someones work is starting off on the wrong foot. I'm sure Hermes did the best he could. Also he did it for free. There is always a way to improve on things and maybe this is indeed an improvement. Bashing someone that gave his own time to work on something that he is releasing to the public for free just sucks.

Hermes, thank you for all of your contributions. Hopefully you come back and work either on your own payload or work on other things within the scene.

For you bashers. Are you going to bash this guy if someone comes out with a better payload or a CFW? I hope not. Time will bring improvements....

Right Duh.lol Haven't tried this yet but will tomorrow about 6am first thing when i wake up( it's my early morning sunday ritual). About the v4 it's his going out big payload and Kakaroto doesn't like his work cause they run two different syscalls. Honestly this is just kakaroto capitalizing, his site is a donation site and he wants more donations into his work. I am sure though that syscall 36 can do things that 35 can't and vice versa. Think about it, PSFreedom is kakaroto while PSGroove was Hermes. which one were you using. And lastly until we get PSN back i don't think anyone should beat it. I'll post in the morning my results. {-]

I just tested out this hex with gaia manager... Its horrible, it wont load 90% of my games, it tries to launch the game and then comes back to menu, or it freezes. I'm going back to Hermes.

yeah, i concur.....didn't boot anything w/out disc. and crashed my ps3 when i held down the ps button and tried to exit the gaia manager. that's probably just a fault in gaia itself. never the less, i just compiled hermes v.4 for a bunch of boards!! enjoy

It was Dark AleX who started cfw on the psp and no one uses it anymore so should we start having a go at him cause his first release was buggy as hell.
Maybe all you Di@ks should be thanking hermes for starting all this and think about his contribution

Thanx Hermes you are one of pioneers

just because this KaKaRoTo guy is a douche I have to point out what kind of pussy he is.

if he had nothing to say about Hermes when psGroove was released then he really should know his place. Hermes has done way too much for not only ps3 but wii, and since he put this scene into motion, i think every single person that ever laid eyes on his code should keep their ass shut and quiet, there's way too much he showed the world on how it works.

that said, and the fact that this Saiyan dbz wannabe douchebag just attacked the freedom fighter of the ps3 hack scene, we should never 'donate' or throw money at KaKaRoTo, instead let's all ping and flood his site on halloween.

Just leave your computers on and flood that sucker

So you think it's ok to attack any developer who we disagree with? No progress would ever be made.

Hermes made huge strides in the payload department, but it was also not a great idea to put peek/poke at the application level, like Kakaroto said, it wouldn't even take a malicient homebrew to brick someones ps3. All it would take is for an application that is made for 3.41 that pokes the correct part of ram to be ran on any other firmware. The place in memory that was poked at could now be something completely different, if it started rewriting the bootloader or some other vital resource, you can kiss your ps3 goodbye.

Sure I think Kakaroto came off a bit harsh, but look at how most of the posters here are acting, Kakaroto never suggested vandalizing Hermes belongings.

I also don't see how everyone thinks that people can never say a negative word towards anyone who writes homebrew. It also seems to only be the developers who write code for pirating. The developer who wrote the breakout clone a week or so ago ended up getting a ton of negative comments, but Hermes is forwarding the pirating community so he's off limits.

When using Minimus AVR PL3 I cannot use Netflix. I see the little clock/loading icon in the top right and then it goes to just a green screen. Very strange. I take out my Minimus and reboot and it all works fine. Anyone else run into this? Does Netflix work with other loads (Hermes v3 or v4)? Also, when running Minimus AVR PL3 and Gaia rc7 I was in Gaia and tried to enable ftp server... the icon in Gaia changed to green, but when I tried to connect with my WinSCP FTP client (works normally with blackboxFTP server) it failed to connect and my PS3 locked up. So, there are still some bugs to work out but I have to say I am really excited with the momentum and rapid pace of development in the scene right now. Get out there and learn all you can folks new things are being discovered and refined every day.

I'm having the same trouble. I have firmware 3.41, and a Teensy 2.0. I tried PL3 and Gaia Manager v1 r7-9, and havn't been able to get a single backup to load. I wasn't having any trouble with Hermes and Flex Manager. I guess it would have been better to ignore Kaka's mud slinging, and just kept what was working.

listen man, if anything should have been said, it should have been said in private. If it was done in private already, kakaroto should have kept hermes' name out of his rant and only point out his thoughts in highlight of line code from psGroove. that way no name is sacrificed only the work behind the name which is easily patched and dealt with.
kakaroto employed an attack and it's widely apparent through his choice of words and recently edited strike-through guilt trip.

as for hermes pulling out once the chinamen cloners use his name in their project:scam, he made an awesome move, because it was the only logical move he had left. if i were him, i'd do the same.

sony has a nasty legal team, and if you know anything about presenting cases in a court-of-law, you'll know that if you were subpoenaed to be there, in front of some very gifted liars, you'd wish you did what hermes is doing now, getting the fk out of the way.

he had no choice, because those chinamen scammers used his name out of all names possible in their bs operation.
even though some will say, "Hermes as a name can't be a copyright infringement, it's a name of a mythical god."

okay, that is a cheesy way to go about protecting chinese scam dupers, why didn't they use a different name like Hercules or Nike? Then again those are corporate Trade Marks and you could sue anyone using them to conduct business for profit.

in conclusion i find the following ironic as sh..

HERMES

"An Olympian god, he is also the patron of BOUNDRIES and of the travelers who cross them, of shepherds and cowherds, of the cunning of THIEVES and LIARS, of ORATORS and WIT, of literature and poets, of athletics and sports, of weights and measures, of INVENTION, and of COMMERCE in general."

To be honest, I don't know anything about HOW Hermes payload work, but all this shit about "could crash in some situations", well Hermes payload have been SUPER stable for me. As with this KaKaRoTo's payload, well people haven't seem to be too lucky.
So even if KaKaRoTo's is better in theory, as long as it doesn't work in practice, well I don't have any use of it.
