Install OtherOS & Linux on your PS3 like this

Posted over at gitbrew.org are the steps to follow to get OtherOS & Linux up and running on your PS3. It's straightforward -- just follow these steps carefully: This guide assumes you have a general understanding of Linux and are comfortable working from command line. It also assumes your PS3 is VFLASH equipped, which is all models with 16MB NAND. That's, if I'm not mistaken, all PS3 Slim models and a few older "Fat" ones: CECHH-P. Installing OtherOS

(Optional) Run udp_printf_client on your PC to see UDP broadcast debug messages sent by OtherOS utils
Delete VFLASH region 6 with delete_vflash6
Delete VFLASH region 5 with delete_vflash5
Create VFLASH region 5 with create_vflash5
Create VFLASH region 6 with create_vflash6
Resize VFLASH storage device with resize_vflash.
All data on HDD will be lost after this step, so make a backup!
Reboot GameOS
Create VFLASH region 7 with create_vflash7
Store dtbImage.ps3.bin on USB device, plug it in and store petitboot on VFLASH region 5 with install_otheros

Booting OtherOS

Set OtherOS boot flag on VFLASH region 5 with boot_otheros
Reboot GameOS with reboot

Booting Linux with petitboot's CUI

Place kboot.conf file in /etc directory of your Linux
Entries contained in the kboot.conf file are showed in petitboot's CUI
Select one entry with keyboard and press 'Enter'

Example of kboot.conf

gentoo_vflash=/boot/vmlinux-2.6.38-gf77c53d root=/dev/ps3vflashh2
 gentoo_vflash_hugepages=/boot/vmlinux-2.6.38-gf77c53d root=/dev/ps3vflashh2 hugepages=1

Installing Debian This will download gitbrew's packaged Debian ISO, partition your newly created vflash, mount the image, unload all drivers and then boot the Debian image.

cd /tmp/
wget gititbit.ch/boot
chmod a+x initimg.sh
./initimg.sh update
./initimg.sh auto

After installing Debian...

umount /dev/ps3vflashh3
mount /dev/ps3vflashh3 /tmp/petitboot/mnt/ps3vflashh3
cd /tmp/petitboot/mnt/ps3vflashh3/
wget http://7track.org/~glevand/public/ps3linux_kernel.tar.bz2
tar xvjf ps3linux_kernel.tar.bz2
cd /tmp/petitboot/mnt/ps3vflashh3/etc/
wget gititbit.ch/kboot

And just like that -- OtherOS is back on your PS3 -- your Slim too! Update: Added is a video tutorial courtesy of Gitbrew:

seems fairly complex.thats a drag, i haver been looking foeward to seeing dual booting.id love to have ubuntu..im most interested in emulator improvment.i have a slim 3.55 rebug.have not been able to get many to work..i see some are for fat only.The saga saturn one should work,but doesnt..by anychance would following this tut bypass the phat and slim barrier for ps1/x,ps2,or saturn emulation

to make things easier why dont they just make patches for all the coresponding cfw's eg. kmeaw, wtrza and set it to run through updat.pup so the update just sets it all up???? is this possible maybe??

So the reason its not going to work for about 1/3 of you trying this is because you have the first gen ps3s with the 256mb NAND, they don't use vflash so it won't delete/create something it doesn't use, this is mostly for slim consoles and every other console with a 16MB NAND because they do use vflash

also i see most good emulators are for phattys..i have a slim. have not been able to use saturn or any ps emu's.would any of this help bypass the phat-slim barrier with emulation

well for devs i'd say the slim with the 16mb nand is better for this linux installer method alone, i personally haven't tried out the ps1 and saturn emulators for the ps3 so i can't verify your theory personally. but the only thing that was superior in the phat ps3 was the backwards compatibility with ps2 and ps1 discs

No shit, I don't understand this either... 256MB is surely better since it has more space allocated to everything needed to install. Couldn't the 256MB NAND just be partitioned to 16MB and the rest left for the PS3 to use for whatever? Naw, that'd be TOO FUCKING EASY... >_>

hi, im very new to the ps3 hacking underworld, i have a wii and xbox also and have hacked(i say hacked just followed the genius of others) them both but never touched the ps3. Now over the course of the last few weeks I have begun to think why not, however im on a 3.60. I could be wrong but iirc the psx/2 backwards comp was an actual piece of hardware not software. (i have a 1000 series)

dunno if it's emulateable with full speed running off an emu on the ps3.

yeahh but downgrading the slims is a litle bit useless dont you thinkk? I mean it all depends what you need it for from recovering files but i notice that some people just want to get the otherOS so that they can download linux andd use it to set up windows for the same architectural build up. But even thatt is a dumb idea, the lack of RAM would make even the start up extremely slow...

I am intending to restore otheros as soon as I can make a backup of my PS3 (which was one of the very last phat models sold, I bought it instead of a slim specifically because I wanted otheros, and it was heavily discounted).

However, before I do, I would like to know whether there will be a CFW version of 3.61 that will give me PSN access as well as otheros. I don't need/want cheats or to play backups, just to be able to use linux on the PS3 and to get a decent web browser and better media players.
