"Hello World" SELF-Signed Homebrew Released

Submitted by greg; January 03, 2011

Another from geohot ... compiled using the open source PSL1GHT SDK is the first self-signed, real SELF for your PS3: "Hello World." geohot notes:
although it's not NPDRM, so please wait to run... shouts to the guys who did PSL1GHT without you, I couldn't release this
And it's like that. You can poke around the .self with fail0verflow's tools. Download: "Hello World" Signed SELF Thanks, Matt for the tip. - source: geohot

5.55??? 3.55 sounds a bit better just a question so does having the root key mean you can pull keys from different firmwares to sign for a pirticulr firmware or will it work for all firmwares or if someone is on 3.41 it won't work if it's using 3.55 keys the app that is lol this is so cool I have like 1000000 idears in my head right now and for anyone that wants to make mal code be prepared to face the full force of the people that know how to fix you right up!!!

From what I understand, This won't work on retail consoles, yet, because it doesn't have NPDRM.

You should be able to run it on a jailbroken ps3 using "ps3load"

I would have thought u must compile it with the failover tools for whatever firmware u have, I.e turn it into an eboot.bin (which is a self file) it would be like a game, depending what keys it was compiled using would dictate what firmware it will run on.

I updated my PS3 ages ago, but now it seems the scene is moving forward into something that is worth getting involved in insteas of the pong games and other, let's say, fairly useless apps/homebrew that has been released.

To all the fanboys of homebrew, lets be honest here, the majority of the people on here just want a way to be able to play pirated games online.

Now, cue all the fanboys and haters to say "it's about the hacking and homebrew", blah, blah, it's about as many people as possible being able to play as many pirated games as possible and online would be even better.

As soon as that kind of hack comes out the 95% of people who come on here should be happy.

It's the nature of the beast.

"Piracy"..."Pirated Games"..Blah blah blah....Same old argument different console.

PS1, hacked..PS2, hacked..Xbox, hacked..Xbox 360, hacked..NDS, hacked..PSP, hacked..PS3, jailbroken a long time before this hack was found...Software Companies still making shed loads of money....Still making Software...

Whether or not this is used for Pirated Games the point remains, it will eventually give back Other O/S and adds HomeBrew to your system. All for free..

So you guys playing around think lolz I gets free games soon.

Another console's security got hacked, I think you may have heard of it... The Dreamcast, and guess what happened to it. If anyone really cared, they'd not support all encompassing hack that can eventually be used to play burned games without CTF and a lot of other BS that wouldn't actually hurt the market.

Even if they released an open source console do you think there would be any mainstream dev's who would want to support it? No because of all the fucking stupid people who would just pirate games instead of supporting them.

If this kills the PS3, I'm putting a bounty on Geohot and Team fail0verflow, just like Bush put one on Osama. Terrorists of the gaming community. DOA (dead on Arrival!)

It was hacked and pirated on since its release like mad.

And see how pathetic it became, TEN YEARS after its release its still being manufactured, still gets new games, still gets new bundles, a lot of people play it and it became the best selling console of all time.

Fucking piracy so ruined that shit.

Not sure I agree with you...every console has been hacked to some degree....maybe not complete system hacks, but all able to play Back-ups/Copies.

The Dreamcast was victim to a similar hack, but then so was the first Xbox, the Dreamcast failed for a few different reasons aside from the system security breach.

You can not in all honesty declare that the PS3 will fail because the security has failed leading to piracy, thats very judgmental of anybody who wishes to use free HomeBrewed software. We are not all pirates nor do we want to be, but we would like to use our console as we want to.

You are right about an open source console never making the market place, but I dont agree that leading Devs wouldnt support due to piracy...Greed would be the problem there, they wont support a system that has free alternatives to their software. It's all about the money...Not the end user or what they want......

To the guy who suggested that the ps3 will fail due to piracy... seriously? Look at the wii, the ps2, the 360..etc. You want to know why the dreamcast failed? To be honest the console was shit. I played it a total of 2 times and it was enough to know that it will fail, I didn't even buy it and I have bought almost every console since I was 14 and playing the turbografx 16.

The first time playing the dreamcast reminded me of the first time I played the atari jaguar, it just didn't interest me in the least. Sega was failing ever since the saturn and the dreamcast was an even worse idea and less thought out. Competition is why sega failed and they just couldn't compete... oh well.

The game industry will never fail due to piracy. The pc game industry still remains quite strong overall and anyone at any time can pirate pc games, but they still make sales on the pc. If a game developer wants to be profitable they have to make their games multi platform, there will be exclusives here and there (only because of payoffs which make it profitable to the developer house)but developers will not hurt from piracy if they are taking care of their business.

Andras I don't support illegal activities, and I'm not saying george is in the wrong for not coming out with a way immediately to pirate games. If I wanted to pirate games I would go about it myself as I've done in the past with figuring out security holes. My point was that if a developer and a console maker were taking care of business piracy would not even make a dent in their profits. Just look at the movie industry some of the most profitable movies have literally came out on the net a week sometimes more before they even reach theatres in most states due to someone at the companies leaking them, yet remain profitable. Record companies remain profitable despite entire album copies being posted online immediately.

Piracy is just a scapegoat that people in different industries use as a means to explain their failures. I am someone that understands if something happens chances are it's my fault, and I learn from the mistake and move on. Why is it so hard for people to take the blame for their mistakes? Perpetually blaming someone else only makes it so a person never actually learns from their mistakes. For the dumbasses talking crap on george for doing what he does, as if he alone is hurting corporations... come the fuck on. George is literally the only reason I bought an iphone.

I looked at it and thought what a piece of shit, I could only think about what I couldn't do on the phone... in reality the phone was useless to me so I didn't even think about getting it until it was jailbroken. Now I use it for everything, network/pc penetration testing, emulators, and a myriad of other things that would not be possible on it otherwise. Even though I do not pirate games I see a use in the people who make it possible because just like most other hackers, they move the industry forward esp. in the aspect of security.

"Only problem with this hack is it can be run on any console out of the shop for free, no chip or special hardware needed so even kids can pirate now."

My point still stands. What is funny is that yet even though it's self explanatory... people are still coming here asking how they load it and what it does. Never-the-less my point is if the product is good, it will sell, if their security is constantly tested... later security will be better off for it.

I'm not sure if this ideal that a software/hardware company should never have it's security tested by outsiders, or individuals and those who do go on and test it are in the wrong... has something to do with this socialistic movement growing (at least here in the united states), but I see some kind of new sentiment growing that just was not here before. Kind of odd/scary if you ask me but ok.

I might be missing something, but why is that the case? Couldn't you use this very technique to make a backup manager that doesn't require a jailbreak dongle to start, or does the jailbreak perform some other function to the process beyond getting the homebrew to boot in the first place?

# Demo Mania 2011-01-03 20:48

Actually, the 80GB PS3 relied on a physical chipset that emulated the PS2 Emotion Engine. New PS3s don't have this extra processor and likely won't get playable PS2 emulation. Not that big a loss anyway, the Software Emulated BC was notoriously bad. Something like 20% of games weren't supported and many other had technical problems when running.

I never said he was a pirate, only a two bit cyber loser, who probably got addicted to pulling down his pants in grade school to show everyone he was the first to grow pubes.

How a company could ever be able to trust any of his work I cant imagine. But obviously he is no pirate, just read all the brain dead posts to see who they are: "how do I save this to play COD4", "will it work online", "where can I get this or that" etc...

Really nice work, you must be really proud Geohotz. Too bad those skills didnt go into something useful, other than pleasing the freeloaders.

Sorry, but its not that easy.

The first batch had both the PS2 CPU and GPU, while the second batch only had the CPU, and emulated the GPU. Later, both were removed. Since the CPU has never been emulated on the PS3 by Sony, it can't just be ripped and used on the slims, sadly.

I think it very interesting that the WII has been hacked but yet it is still one of the best selling consoles out there. It is still producing games (albeit not great games like the PS3 IMHO). I think the power to open source is one that should be in the hands of many. If someone takes something and illegally does something with it, well it is a free will world and we can all face comeuppance for our actions. Just like guns... idiots know how to misuse them but they should still be available to the law abiding folks. It is those of us willing to take risks to develop new things that need people like geohot. There are always critics of the good and bad aspects of everything. With time and talent the ability to unlock software is always capable, and the use of hardware in new and different ways should happen. Industrial espionage is going to happen and at least the world has the access not some Chinese garage looking to make a quick knockoff buck. I think the market for the Gamesharks of the world is still there but are being pushed aside by the consoles and developers because of the push to online game play. It is inherent in our nature as humans to cheat the system but you cannot push your morality on other people that have different concepts or values because it is "offensive" to you.

So with all this, is the ps3 going to be like the wii were we can put the games on a external hard drive and play them off the hard disk?

There are people who buy their games, like me, who just want to play them off the hard drive since they load faster and you save your Blu-Ray drive. Plus I'm lazy and don't like getting off the couch to swap game discs.

Well for all people crying that when a game loader comes out, piracy will be spreading like a disease, i have one thing to say.

If a game has a great MP then it is all you need to protect it from piracy. As long as you cant play with your downloaded/backuped game Online then everything is still ok.

"The Dreamcast, and guess what happened to it."

Is that supposed to be some sort of joke?

EVERY console has been busted wide open including PC yet ALL of them remained lucrative. Except of course for the POS dreamcast.

On another note, the gamecube did NOT get hacked until way late in the game yet it was one of the worst performing consoles. Aside from the POS dreamcast.

Piracy doesn't mean squat.

TO: ISOHaven

The dreamcast only died because sony bribed developers to develop for the POS2.
