Long story short, geohot is getting sued by Sony because they dislike hackers who fuck with their hardware, and up until now geohot has refused donations to fund his ongoing legal battle. Well minus 10k and counting geohot is now reaching out and asking for a little help. Any donations made will be used to back geohot with some heavy hitting lawyers ... leftover donations when everything is said and done will be paid forward to EFF. Questions? Concerns? Donations? Check out geohot.com for everything; he's got it all laid out nice for you. Also setup is a new blog that'll be used for updates on the case, which looks to be a long drawn out one. Dashhacks will be donating $500 and we challenge any other big PS3 site to match that. If it's matched we'll put forth another $500. That'll buy a few hours of the Law's time. Fight the power! Update: Whether or not this'll help, who knows... It's a petition against Sony and their unjust ways.

Just a thought, if Geohot thinks he can win the case against ps3 and believes he is doing nothing wrong ....... why does he not jailbreak 3.56 ?

I know he is in a battle of wills against Sony and their shysters but if he truly believes that he has done nothing wrong, then jailbreak 3.56, may as well be hung for a sheep as a lamb!

ps I will donate next payday, as I would love a jailbreak on 3.56 and if this is a way of trying to secure it by funding this fight then so be it

You know what, Brick87 and a few others on here have made up my mind for me. Unfortunately, due to a HUGE f*ck up on my bank's part I'm currently without funds. But I get paid on March 1st. Im afraid im too late to donate, but i did sign the petition and had this to say...

Sony has taken away features that they have originally advertised and persuaded me with in order to buy their ps3 system. Now my only options are whatever THEY feel that i should do with the device that i spent my hard earned money on during this recession. I am furious. I feel that sony owes me a refund. But all i want is the option for Other OS back, it should be illegal for them to take it away after advertising it. I bought it mainly for a computer, not just for gaming. i hope that sony can understand what their recent actions have done to their reputation, but i also hope they can see that its never too late to have a change of heart and understand that their relationship with the consumer is key to their future.

5,000 x $1 = $5,000. 500 x $100 = $50,000. I agree with what you're saying though, everyone can give at least a little. Even if you don't use the custom firmware or homebrew, this is more about Sony taking away a huge incentive they offered to buy the PS3. OtherOS was a huge selling point, but they rescinded on their advertised product. What I don't get is that their concern is console security, i.e. the ability to hack the console. The PS3 has already been hacked, what would be the harm in bringing OtherOS support back? I'm sure many that may support this cause would not be as supportive then since Sony wouldn't be reneging on their part.

If you own a company that makes bread and one day you see people coming into your shop, eating your bread, then hightailing off, are you trying to tell me you would just go about the rest of your day as if they don't exist? That's what you're saying Sony should do, and it sounds like you're a fucking idiot.

It's because of hackers that I can no longer use Linux on my PS3 and have to suffer the overwhelming amount of firmware updates that attack my PS3. Sony didn't want to do this. They wanted us to have Linux. They wanted us to have a cheap supercomputer. But what happened? Some kids thought they would make themselves appear to have a bigger penis size than they really do and hacked the system. Now, no more Linux. And guess what? That means PS4 won't have Linux too, and they'll probably have a shit-ton of less features than they would have had if the fucking pirate kept their dick in their pants.

Our freedom to use our consoles were given to us by Sony. When it was abused, Sony took it back. Having Linux on a console was something we could only have dreamed of years ago and it would have been SO EASY for them to have just made some cheap shitty console like the Xbox 360 or the Wii. Thanks to you guys, that's what the PS4 will look like. Way to go you fucking cunts.

When did I say you don't get the right to own your hardware? I didn't. But when you hack a system...you're doing it for what purpose again? I mean, sure there are great things to do with it like homebrew and some other cute things. But answer me this with legitimacy. Did you seriously give up online gameplay just for that? Now that in itself is not bad all that bad. I pirate games too. But you know what the problem I am having with this is? DONATING TO A PERSON TO MAKES PIRATING POSSIBLE. WHY? IT MAKES NO SENSE AT ALL. You are not fighting for the right to own your console, because you do own it and you can choose not to update anytime you want. Sony owns their network, and if you want to access it you need to update your firmware. They own the server, you access it based on their requirements. Makes sense.

What doesn't make sense? Using money you could have used to buy video games to pay for someone to pirate those video games. It makes no sense at all. There are video game developers that make art engaging games. And yet you would give your money to a hacker than to them? It's not right, at all.

I didn't say you donated, but I am against your position of supporting donaters. I own the PS3 I bought. No seriously, it's sitting right there and I'm pretty sure Sony didn't replace it with a fake. So let's shoot down your comment one point at a time. You ask if I gave up online play for homebrew and then say I did it just to pirate games. Newsflash for you, sweetheart ;), I don't play online. AT ALL. I buy games to play solo campaigns and to play against friends on the same PS3. I don't care for online gaming. I see no point to it or fun in it. I also, don't give a flying f*ck about trophies or any of that bs. So I gave up nothing. Also, I should point out, since you assume that I'm pirating games, that my PS3 is running official firmware. Gasp! Shocker! That's right genius, I've got a completely legit PS3. So by default, that means what? Oh, that's right. I CANNOT pirate games. I can only play the ones I legally own and purchased. Now onto Geohot. He did not enable piracy. He released CFW that DID NOT allow backing up of games at all. Just homebrew. So already you're blaming him for something he didn't do. He also didn't release the tools. Other people took what he started and expanded on it, and there were other groups already at the same point as him. So they're responsible. You just want a scapegoat to b*tch about and he's it. So again, another point of yours shot down.

I buy one game maybe every half year. I use my PS3 more for playing media than gaming. I own all of like 4 or 5 games. So yeah. Trying to say "developers need your money" doesn't work in my case. Because I don't buy games really. I watch movies and stuff on my PS3 and so does my family. So the money I do have goes to other things, like drinking, movies, etc. In this case, it'd be donating to a cause I support. So in my case, it is right to give money to this guy. Because I don't like most of the games that are out. And I am not gonna support crap (in my opinon) like Call of Duty, Guitar Hero, etc.

And you pretty much said I donated. You went off on your trip and insinuated this and that and were practically going off on things I did not say. Or are you conveniently forgetting that? I think you are. You're against supporting this, fine. Nice. But don't f*cking step up to me and tell me what I can or can't do with my money. Or stop putting words in my mouth about "kids in Africa" and stuff like that. You come off high and mighty. Way more so than I do. And you're still trying to appear that way.

Basically, everything you said is BS in regards to me. And I've just told you why. K, dear? You understand? Or would you like me to explain further, sweetie? ; )

Don't reply to me again. You fail because you make assumptions that aren't true and that don't apply to me. And you also, piece of advice, get mad and respond to people. The sweetheart comment got to you, that's obvious. And you got riled up and tried to come back all hardcore and didn't do that. You just proved how petty you are and how much it annoys you that people like me can put you in your place. So basically, I'm done with you. : )
