Downgrading PS3 Firmware 3.70 to 3.55 with ProgSkeet

Equipped with a ProgSkeet and some unreleased files, which dospiedra plans to release soon, DiGiTaLAnGeL was able to successfully downgrade firmware 3.70 to a CFW-enabled 3.55. Working collabo, DiGiTaLAnGeL confirmed dospiedra's method using a PS3 Slim armed with NOR flash memory. Apparently too the method requires some NOR patching... We'll keep posted once these files are available. And by the sounds of it:

With this version of moddata 3:55, you can perform a memory dump today and you can go to air from 3:55 to 3.70 without having to do this all the time-consuming process: using progskeet fact you can go straight to 3.70 changed to 3:55!

With this version of moddata 3:55, you can perform a memory dump today and you can switch on the fly from 3:55 to 3.70 without having to do this all the time-consuming process: using progskeet fact you can go straight to 3.70 changed to 3:55!

I have never heard of anyone who got sued for installing a modchip into their own device, nor have i never heard of anyone who get sued for installing something like custom firmware. But i know that people who sell modchips have been sued. The same goes for people who install modchips for others and get payed for it. I'm not sure if many cares when the modchip just does a more simple downgrade though.

True. also, i forgot to mention earlier, these "modchips" are not dedicated devices for i.e the PS3, so they wouldnt be illegal like this. It can be used for many things, not just the PS3.

I dont see how a firmware downgrade is really a big setback for Sony. What matters the most for Sony is to stop piracy. Downgrading to 3.55 wont let you play new PS3 games anyway. The downgrade process is also a fairly complex operation, so it isnt something that anyone can do easily.

Sony have been trying to improve their security online and offline(system) , they have been giving out software updates like 3,56 3,60 3,65 3,66 And 3,70 after the geohot-hacking, even though they used so much effort for just improving their security, it was no good. They did everyting to stop something like this, but they failed. As i said, SO MUCH EFFORT FOR NOTHING. nuff said

The main focus with the 3.56 to 3.70 firmware updates has been to stop people from playing pirated games and not connecting to PSN. This protection has not yet been beaten (or at least not been published to everyone), so it has definitely been worth the effort for Sony so far.

There might have been some extra protection added to prevent downgrading though, but that is just a small part of it the way i see it. The biggest part is to stop piracy from spreading more on the PS3, and Sony has achieved this (at least so far). I already see many people who are impatient to get a newer CFW because they are tired of only playing older games on CFW 3.55. I have also seen people going back to official firmware because there were no progress in getting 3.56+ CFW and they were tired of waiting.

Progskeet also has a relatlively high price. It cost around $60. You also need to be good at soldering. If you're not good at this, maybe you have to pay a guy like $40 - $50 to do the soldering for you, and then you have an total investment of about $100 just to do a downgrade. For $100 you might get a used PS3 instead (which hopefully havnt had its firmware updated above 3.55).
