Blu-ray Patched Lv2diag for Downgrading PS3 Firmware

Whatever you do: DO NOT TRY THIS ON 3.56! If you do you'll forever remain in Factory/Service mode -- the point of no return. Maybe someone, some day will figure out a clever way if you're stuck, but till then, you've been warned. The idea behind JaicraB's patched Lv2diag.self is that your Blu-ray drive, should that be broken, will be skipped during the PS3UPDAT.PUP scan, which means you can downgrade/upgrade your firmware without a functional Blu-ray drive present. Personally I didn't know a broken Blu-ray drive would prevent you from doing that, but hey ... you learn something new everyday. The other reason this patch was created is for PS3's with a 256MB NAND. If you recall downgrading a PS3 with a 256MB NAND will render Blu-ray playback inoperable. This aims to fix that when downgrading from 3.50/3.55 to 3.41. Again: do not attempt a downgrade from 3.56. This Lv2diag.self is to be used as the first in any PS3 downgrading procedure. Remember two (2) "Lv2diag.self" files are used: 1) for performing the actual downgrade while in Factory/Service mode; and 2) for exiting Factory/Service mode, returning your PS3 to normal. Consoles with faulty BD drives cannot normally be updated as the update from the firmware they were on when the drive failed. Because the update process does a hardware test and fails the upgrade, generally leaving the PS3 in an 'update loop'. But still able to get to a recovery mode menu.

So, my question is.. could this modded file help upgrade older PS3's to OFW3.55 by bypassing the faulty BD check. And if so, what would the process be?

The CFW is flashed to the console itself, not the hard drive so you won't have to reinstall the CFW. I would suggest you use an FTP server to backup your current PS3 hard drive before you install the new one as your PS3 forces you to reformat any new hard drives on startup. After your new hard drive is good and installed you can use the FTP server to copy the contents of your old hard drive to the new one.

Yea I know. even tho downgrading the ps3 gives u more control, and will actually work with more games.
You know, recoding Mupen64 to work on PS3 shouldn't be that hard for a developer or a pc nerd guy to do. I mean it's coded in linux, so maybe the only thing that actually needs to be changed is the gui part and how it reads the gfx and controller drivers.
They can do like they did on the other emulators. They can use the same gui.

That would be for an external drive. If your PS3 can't read your drive, you just lost your data. You'd need to backup your data from the PS3. Your PC won't see what's on it. And if I'm right, the internal PS3 HDD is encrypted and can it's data can only be "seen" by your PS3. For the new one, no need to format. Fat32 is for external drive connected to the USB port

not really, without a good working drive ( with a matching board) i cant boot anything (homebrews and demos or watever) if i don't have the bd board married to my ps3.

If ur upgrading your internal hdd to a larger size, u can use HD Clone. It clones you partition to the new one and then expands it, WORKS PERFECT! just need 2 external 2.5" drive cases and ur off! unless u have a desktop, then just use sata. This way u keep all downloaded dlc which does not copy over when u do a system backup on the ps3.

I'm reading that this is only for the upgrading/downgrading on firmware. I have a CECHA01 which black screens when I open up the lv2, I'm assuming because of the blu-ray drive being inoperable. I do have a working CECHA01 and a slim ps3 as well. I have the two working consoles usually in use and online, so I didn't want to put CFW on either of those.

Would you think this will allow me to downgrade to 3.41 and maybe try again? Maybe try and see if I can actually pass the black screen I get from running lv2?

So I'm actually on CFW 3.41. When I did the downgrade I lost Bluray function...you know when I put is a bluray movie it says "you do not have permission to play this disc" Will this fix it is i upgraded to 3.55 & back to 3.41 again?

So while everybody is off topic, i got a real question to ask about this:

"The other reason this patch was created is for PS3?s with a 256MB NAND. If you recall downgrading a PS3 with a 256MB NAND will render Blu-ray playback inoperable. This -->aims to fix<-- that when downgrading from 3.50/3.55 to 3.41."

I put my ps3 into factory/service mode with a ti84 calculator and downgraded from 3.56 waninkoko cfw (kmeaw is better) to 3.41 ofw with this special patched lv2.diag file. These were at the root of my usb. I deleted them and added a regular #2 file of the lv2.diag and then turned my ps3 on. This put me out of 3.41 factory mode and into official 3.41 mode.

Now, according to this, my ps3 blu ray player should be operable? ......IT ISN'T!!!!

Ok, So can anyone give me any info on how to
patch an OFW with this, or even a CFW with this file.
I am currently stuck at OFW 3.0 and cannot update because my $25 PS3 off Craigslist with a broken Blu-Ray drive turned out to be no Blu-Ray drive....ie no logic board...So if we could in fact bypass the drive during an update, I could actually complete the update. I am willing to try, if someone would point me in the right direction of compiling a FW with this.

fails every time on a launch 60gig ps3. read the log after all the three runs and it fails at the same spot. it just leaves my ps3 in state where you turn it on and then after a few seconds it turns off with nothing in the screen. you have to go into recovery mode and reinstall the 3.55 sony update to get back to normal. but to able to get into recovery mode successfully you have to load the second lv2 file (the one used to get out of factory/service mode) first as you normally would. i dunno y it wont work on mine. i did previously downgrade before so maybe that has something to do with it. and as a side note i never had problems downgrading before and im following everything to the letter.

so after messing with it all day its not the pathched lv2 file that hangs my system up its all any lv2 file other than the one needed to get it out of factory/service mode. i cant downgrade at all now to 3.41. i originally downgraded successfully but then after having that for awhile i used the Kmeaw's pathched 3.55 CFW with GEOHOT JB. Ive gotten it back to sony's 3.55 OFW by using the method in my above post but still cant downgrade to 3.41 even from that. Im at a loss.

so again after messing with it a bit i realized my firmware files were corrupted or maybe mislabeled somehow, i downloaded new ones and was successful in downgrading to 3.41. Has anyone confirmed you keep blu-ray playback by using this patched lv2.self file though, maybe only if its your first time ever downgrading but it didn't work for me. Before I i used the patched lv2 file i downgraded to 3.41 OFW using the old lv2 file that's been around the whole time and re enabled blu-ray play back using the drl copy app etc. then i upgraded to KMEAWS 3.55CFW and GEOHOT JB etc. now just to see if the patched lv2 file would work i then downgraded to 3.41 again this time using the patched lv2 file and i still lost my blu-ray playback like before. so i just re-enabled it again using the drlcopy app like before. None of this probably matters i just figured if i spent some time working on it, it might be good to share so here ya go
