PS3 Firmware (OFW) 3.56 Live!

It's out -- System Update! According to Mr. Lempel, "A new PS3 system software update, v3.56, will be released soon. This is a minor update that adds a security patch." Well of course it does. You know the drill: Do not update if your PS3 is hacked in any way ... unless you prefer PSN to custom firmwares & homebrew. My non-hacked console is updating now. PSN access on [custom] firmware < 3.56, by way of Logan5 proxy tool or Aaron's DNS trick, will probably remain open for a couple of days until someone at Sony pulls that switch. I haven't tried either yet; I'm just going on Sony's previous track record. Update: Anyone successfully update yet? The download here keeps timing out part way through (error 80710723). Update: DNS trick confirmed working ... for the time being. Set your DNS to 67.202.81.137 under Settings -> Network Settings -> Internet Connection Settings. Update: All right, all updated! geohot's jailbreak is recognized but of course does not install: The data is corrupted. (8002F828). Update: KaKaRoTo with the quickness... Packing and unpacking 3.56 is now possible with the latest in ps3utils and ps3tools. Also updated are the keys for said firmware. So update your git clones! A new custom firmware is nearing, and you know that! Update: Attention all you running custom firmware and for whatever reason have decided, "I'm going to upgrade to OFW 3.56." Well you should hold that thought and restore to OFW 3.55 first. There are reports circulating that "my PS3 no longer turns on" after updating to 3.56 from a custom firmware. In other words: your console may end up bricked. I would restore to OFW 3.55 and wipe everything off the HDD first (from the Recovery Menu). Update: Ok, so maybe a new custom firmware isn't nearing... I jumped the gun on that. It appears as though Sony has added or changed some keys, which we don't yet know, and those keys are preventing us from signing 3.56 PUPdates (or CFWs) -- we can only decrypt/encrypt right now -- no signing. I'm sure it is only a matter of time though.

I just hate that this disables netflix. I have 3 ps3's, one in den, one in 8 year olds room, one in gameroom. we never play online, he has like 10 games, that are on all 3 harddrives. It's great he can play on any of the playstations without me having to worry about lost/scratched disks, more broken blue ray drives. I wish I government wasn't corrupt from top to bottom, if it wasn't they would tell software companies, fuck off no copyprotection or no sales in us.

Updated only 1 of 5 systems I have. This one has the Awesome file manager...Ftp server...install pkgs.
Slightly good news...I can still host and run directory online.

Well 3 things come to mind about that

1: If your going to cheat at online, you deserved to be banned, Im quite happy to have backups and download games, and i'll admit that, But if you cheat online, you deserve to be banned.

2: It shouldn't matter that you were banned as they are shutting down the COD: BO servers anyway.

How to bypass the update.....

Go to network settings on ps3..

Then Internet connection settings...

then Click CUSTOM

Then go all the way till you reach the the part were it says DNS settings

Click manual

Then put these in...67.202.81.137
on Both!

Then finish

then go and sign in again!!

Sign in to PSN Without Updating to 3.56

Tutorial:
1. Go to "Network Settings" >"Internet Connection Settings" > "DNS Setting" > "Manual"

2. Now put this number as both the Primary and Secondary DNS:

67.202.81.137

3. You should be able to sign into PSN without updating to 3.56.

Note: I have not tested this myself & I dont know how long it will work.

First of all I myself use CFW but that does not mean that I'm a pirate as I buy games as well. In fact all the games that are on my Internal HDD are games that I currently have physical copies of that I've worked hard to buy and enjoy. Not everyone that has CFW uses it for pirating. Some just want to enjoy games with less loading times (Gran Turismo 5, etc) and Homebrew applications that make it easier to browse the web (Linux). What? You don't think I realize that downloading the game is stupid because the companies won't make money therefore they won't make more games? Guess what I do. Before you decide to call everyone on this site a pirate do your homework and think twice.

well what i did is i downloaded 3.55 from the ps3 site to a usb and then updated. but now that im on 3.55 idk why but it times out at 17 percent everytime i try to update to 3.56. i did the DNS thing that that guy said to do way up in the comments and it let me sign it, but lv2 patcher and multiMAN dont work anymore for me anyway.

You should be able to install homebrew on any OFW. The only thing this update would affect is backup loaders. It won't be long until 356 gets cracked I think. The only people who will suffer are those who want to play online and may have to keep updating firmware every week or so, as if Sony's useless updates weren't frequent enough already

man fuck, see this makes me think of something though even though we keep updating our firmwares and use cfw on them Sony will just keep going and that's annoying as FUCK, is there another way to bypass psn on a previous firmware version (without logans tool or aarons dns trick) or maybe stay on a hacked firmware and dual boot firmwares or something, maybe use a homebrew like Devhook that was on psp lol, that was a very clutch homebrew would be awesome to see it on ps3 and would probably help out the psn problem !

I got the first 60gig FAT ,model number CHEHA01 (something like that) Kmeaw CFW. Got the latest mulitman to backup my games, i think it faster to backup games and I use Gaia to play my backup games. Now, to go online thanks to X

I used the proxy for PSN manager and started d/ling the update, but it told me the system version was current. wtf? I could even connect to PSN on 3.55. Just by using the proxy.

You can still go into recovery mode by holding the power button until you hear the double beeps. What is not working is that the PS3 is supposed to start in recovery mode if you had the dongle with the files plugged into it upon startup.

For your update that entails an error that was solely digits i had that today as well.. I found that I couldn't redownload items I purchased on the PSN so I deactivated my system then it wouldn't let me reactivate due to same error code.. I backed up my data & formatted my HDD and that did the trick... I went back on OFW for the time cuz I have an original 60 GB launch model and have received the YLOD for 12th time... fixed it with thermal pads and decided that it's time to call Sony for a coffin.

I told him to wait until everything is more stable before jailbreaking but the dumbass have to play SNES on his PS3 (He has the SNES on his psp and comupter dont know why he need to play it on his ps3???O_o). Hmm, I'm sure there will be a new cfw in the next day or so. From my understanding all they did was change the encryption code. Unfortunately for Sony the rootkey is out now, and decryption is easy. It sounds like they'll just release updates to take us offline for a few days at a time, and then game on. Its what Nintendo has done regarding hacks of the Wii.

My PS3 is DEAD. It just boots to a RED screen saying "A serious error has occured. Contact technical support for assistance." I had the Kmeaws 3.55 loaded with my PS3 wireless. I never d/l the 3.56 update, but I did log on to the PSN for a few minutes, then shut off the PS3. Went to boot it back up about 30 minutes later and it would load as far as 1 second of the home screen then displayed this RED error message in a bunch of different languages saying the above message. I tried booting the PS3 back to the startup manager and tried to reload the Kmeaws 3.55 which worked but after it boots I still get the RED screen!!! Help, now what do I do? My PS3 is BRICKED!!!

So The weirdest thing happened. I did not update my ps3 and I am running geo 355. I wont connect because of the 3.56 update. I was messing around and put in my blackops, went to multiplayer. Thinking maybe I can bypass the update that way. The game asked me to connect to the ps3 and I said yes. it never ask if I wanted to update and it connect right away to psn. I check the system update, "the latest version of the syten software is already installed. There is no need to update". Then I checked the system setting, I am still on 3.55 and able to connect and homebrew still accessible !!!

Here's a little tutorial to get safe to OFW 3.56:

1. Use "Wipe History".
2. Update to OFW 3.55!
3. Then update to OFW 3.56!

That's the best way to stay unbanned.

Hey everybody do this simple solution hopefully it work for you geohotz3.55 users.

1. turn off the automatic sign in.
2. Put in Blackops/ any games with multiplayer mode.
3. Go to multiplayer and it will ask you to connect to psn.
4. Sign in. It wont ask for the update.

I promise this will work and you still able to use your cfw and you will still able to go online.

This step will skip 3.56 all together. Hopefully it work for you guys. I have the 40 gig (fat)ps3.

Most likely, if you're on OFW 3.55, you should be fine. If you want to be extra sure, use Wipe History and delete your 3.55 homebrew (they wouldn't work on 3.56, anyway).

Ive not been on here in a while. Here is what I think. Update if you want, I am. I only ever patched my system on 3.41, got bored, wanted PSN and updated. I knew one day CFW would come along so I was not bothered. Thing is though, Sony do kind of have the upper hand where PSN is concerned. I for one love playing online, but some don't as they want homebrew. Fair enough, each to their own.
Now that we have the keys etc, there is really not a lot Sony can do with regards to updates. It will simply now be a cat and mouse game of PSN access and no PSN access. Perhaps when that war finally get's really intense Sony will bring down the ban hammer. Until then hackers, crackers, Sony car jackers.....all unite as one and tell our enemies that they may take our PSN but they will never take our freedom!

i tested cfw last week and it wasn't really all that good ,im glad to see sony bring out an update ,i personally would have liked it if all consoles with unknown code were perma banned with this update (my ps3 included) just so all this shit could be killed off there and then.Yes it IS tempting to hack but come on ,it's really only for playing downloaded games you want for free , home-brew features that open up the console is what i want but sony already give you loads and still add new stuff but no longer will they do that with a hacked/dead console ,this just ruins it for the masses.

I pay my mortgages, have kids work pretty hard and I have no desire to backup or for that matter pirate games (not saying you are a pirate). If a game is good I buy it and I enjoy playing it that simple. People have to right to do what they want with the consoles but Sony also has a right to do what it wants with the PSN if it can stop pirated or backed up games from working on the network that's its right and I think fair enough. If people want to modify the console to run pirate games than I think they deserve to be prevented from connecting to the PSN. No, you own a license to the OS, you don't own the rights to the OS. The company that produced the OS can, at any point, force you to update your OS in order to keep your system operable. In fact, many companies employ the same tactics with their software. You must update in order to use any online functionality. At least Sony doesn't force you to buy a new $150 OS to install additional RAM for no apparent reason like Microsoft. You're attacking the wrong person. Sony's fully within their rights to force OS updates and they are fully within their rights to turn off any existing features on a PS3 especially since you could've just kept using the PS3 as a Linux box without updating the console in the first place. You decided you wanted to have a mini super computer for a Linux box that would cost you upwards of $1000 normally and still retain ps3 online game functionality? The PS3 is not a great console and I couldn't give two shits about today's Sony, today's games, or today's developers. The DS was the last truly great console. Enabling backups and homebrew on the PS3 turned it from a giant dust magnet to something useful for me.

You also need to understand that piracy accounts for about 1% in lost sales. Just because 1 million people pirate your game doesn't mean 1 million would've actually bought it. Most live in countries where they make in one year what an American makes in two weeks.

I admit my online purchases have dwindled to a halt as I do not even think of putting my console on the network for time being but did for a short time and purchased a good bit of content during the few days that it was on.

i'm all for this CFW business, and i think people should be able to do whatever they want/experiment all they please with their PS3 as long as it doesn't affect others but what pisses me off so much is ALL THE CHEATS that people use in online multiplayer games (particularly MW2).

MW2 is the ONLY game i play online (and i don't even get to play every day, more like 2 or 3 hours per week). But now since all the hacked servers and aimbots and all the other shit it has become unplayable.

What is the fucking point?

I get the whole "backup manager" thing (which is another word for piracy) - and honestly, this is why 99% of people wanted "custom firmware" and i don't mind or care what people do when playing games in single player mode, be it a legit or otherwise copy of a game.
But what is the point of all these stupid hacks when playing online? Why ruin the game? Do you feel like a little God, doing as you please, going through walls, getting headshots through the walls from the opposite corner of the map, not dying or unlocking all the perks or weapons or ammo? Where is the joy in that? Is that the only way you can play a game?
Do you really enjoy this shit? Is your life so pathetic in the real world that you have to play God online?
I hope Sony and the game developers find a way to secure the online side of things and keep servers clean of all this crap. I also hope that whatever solution they use it will last.
I know I’m not the only one feeling this way.

And NO, I’m not affiliated with Sony or any other game developer, nor do I even remotely know anyone involved in the gaming industry.

I only bought a PS3 two weeks ago and only once I knew that the keys were hacked and it appeared there would be CFW. I would not have bought a ps3 otherwise and stuck with my hacked xbox360. If a game is good I don't buy it and I enjoy playing it that simple. People have the right to do what they want with the consoles but Sony does not have a right to do what it wants with the PSN. Sony cannot stop pirated or backed up games from working on the network as its our right and I think fair enough. If people want to modify the console to run pirate games than I think they deserve not to be prevented from connecting to the PSN. But it is not your right to burn games (or back them up, or pirate them) And play them online. That is illegal. Your essentially stealing from the companies that publish the game. Do not update. What they can do and probably have done is block you from installing firmware updates signed with 'leaked' keys. So once you're on 3.56, there may be no way back to CFW.

I love the hacking community as much as most of you all do, but to be fair, a lot of you are saying Sony should be happy to sell more consoles, but in actuality, selling more consoles hurts Sony because each is sold at a loss to Sony, since it costs far more to make each unit than what they it at. Sony makes its money by licensing the use of its software to develop games, and also receives a portion of the sale of new games. Sony can only make money from the PS3 from games, not selling consoles. I have done a case involving this very issue, and so I can sympathize with Sony wanting to stop game piracy. However, I do strongly believe in a consumer's rights to modify his or her own equipment, so I firmly endorse CFW, at least to be able to play homebrew.

I remember back in the day when you could buy cheap ZX Spectrum games for as little as a pound (the cheap range - the more expensive would be about 8 quid) people would still borrow them from friends to copy. If people want to pirate games they will find a way - if they want to support the industry they will pay.
Hell, piracy was going to destroy the music and film industry but actual music sales are up (cd sales are down, but overall sales are up through legal downloads) and movie stars are still getting massive wages so it doesn't harm the business that much. It just dents the profit margins of the fat cats. Game sales make more money than music/movie sales so there's still plenty of money going around - the companies are just greedy and want more. more. people are willing to pay 300-400 for a system and 40-100+ for a game... If you don't want to spend that much than don't buy.
I would love to see a 300 computer that can put out ps3 graphics.at 300 you are dealing with intel atoms and integrated chip sets.

Think of the ethical issues too, sony spent billions developing, marketing, producing. was it wrong for them to remove linux? prolly is it right for you to dl/back-up copies of games? prolly.

I don't agree with the issue of backed up games. Sony took the complaints of games getting scratched and the b-ray is now nearly impossible to scratch... if you scratch a b-ray you deserve to buy a new copy of the game.

Not as easy to hack this time. I am sure none of you read how this works but the system moved the keys to a folder and encrypted the folder with a random number generator called on the L1 system. i have geohot 3.55 installed and updated to 3.56 OFW. my system is fine. it starts fine and i log into psn fine. i played black ops online no problem. the update didnt get rid of update via Mass Storage drive. I still have all my files under game which are Little Big Planet 2, NFS Hot Pursuit, and AC Brotherhood. it also didnt delete any other files like FTP server. obviously nothing starts up but i still have everything so hopefully we can get some new eboots and crap.
so if ur scared to update u shouldnt be.

PSN is a polished and built in LAN over Net Tunneler, yes they do have servers that host things (PSN Store, games lobbies, and match searches) but as for playing with friends online thats just you connecting to the host which is one of the players in the game.

Check out X-Link, more importantly I would like to encourage any coders out there to look into making homebrew to make something similar to X-Link built in, maybe even just routing to xlink. Maybe its not possible but seems like it could be. Honestly i don't mind using Xlink right now and it requires me to use my laptop to connect to the games first, if it was built in, like an app i think people would rather use it over PSN.

I think this would be the most valuable thing to the hacking community, we need our own servers screw psn.

I had same issue. filezilla was not creating the folders so it was timing out. You could in theory write the fodlers yourself with multimon or something and then upload or just use a different ftp client.

Blu-ray 3D™ disc playback

The PS3™ system can now play 3D content on Blu-ray 3D™ discs.

You can now submit "grief reports" if you receive unwelcome or harassing messages. To submit a grief report, select the message under [Friends], press the button, and then select [Grief Report].

* You can now access public information on Facebook from Facebook-supported games.

[Allow Access from Games] has been added under (PlayStation®Ne twork) > (Account Management) > (Facebook).

New for 3.56: A security patch has been added.

Made the call to Sony @ 6:04am, 1/27/11 for an issue of no downloaded content working. Natrually he suggested a new firmware! 3.56 was 22% when it dawned on me that this was not a fix, but an attemp to block CFW!~ I then halted the upgrade asked what it was for and he said " You already started the update it would do more damage if I quit" I said BS I have 4 ps3's that are broken I am leaving it at 3.55. the conversation ended with him offering me a replacement for my other 2 backward compat models, for 99.00 bucks/ w upgraded slims, I declined and said it a long road to victory, its all good I'll figure it out. first of all people were already cheating before the jb by game save data not by jb. second of all sony is showing there true colors now by just patching the jb which leads to game backups which sony really cares about, they dont care about your online experience, they dont care that your getting frustrated wit people running around with auto nade launchers, infinite amo, auto sniper rifles. they did nothing to fix this problem all they care about is game backups perod!

Go to the "Blowing Clouds" theme and preview it, look at the XMB!

Sony's staff are utilising the jailbreaks aswell, clearly they're not as pissed off as they make out.

I had 3.55 CFW and Updated.
Right after updating to OFW 3.56 I System Restored so everything got erased.Will this stop me from being bricked?

Sony certainly can ban people for jailbreaking - the JTAGed Xbox 360s were banned within days of the hack being announced, frankly i'm amazed that Sony have not done anything like that yet, especially as the jailbreak and CFW surely would be far easier to trace than the the xbox 360 DVD CFWs...

Someone has to make a CFW for 3.56 that will work for 3.55 signed games and that will work as an upgrade from your jailbreaked 3.55. It also needs to lock out Sony's update things so that people can login to their accounts even after ofw 3.57 or whatever comes out.

Luckely I usualy play Singel player games, so I for one won't downgrade to 3.56. Yes, I said downgrade. this new so called ''update'' from Sony isn't allowing people to use the full potentil of there PS3s.

Fixed the issue. When entering the DNS, don't enter it under the IP Address Settings. Keep hitting right until it ASK for the DNS settings. THEN you enter the information there. Let's pray that this works until the 3.56 CFW is working correctly.
