PS3 Firmware 3.55 Downgrade Released

Backed by mathieulh's advice, solidpsycho does a solid for all those wanting to return to firmware 3.41; I'm sure you have your reasons... You'll need to re-equip your jailbreak/downgrade device for this one. Downgrade at your own risk. You may downgrade your PS3 to a brick if you're not careful. Several reports indicate success (mostly Fat models); others have reported bricks (more Slim models; 3.50/3.55 out-the-box). My boy, Quake, he successfully downgraded his Slim (not 3.50 out-the-box). You're also at risk of losing Blu-ray movie playback. Backup your PS3 saves and other HDD data. Again, proceed at your own risk. Here we're downgrading from 3.55 to 3.41(3.56):

Download this (modified PUP + Lv2diag files)
Get your Factory/Service Mode (downgrade) device ready
Get your USB storage device ready (FAT32 formatted)
Power down your PS3 console (toggle power switch on rear or unplug from wall)
Copy FILE1/Lv2diag.self (from Lv2diag_355.zip) to the root of your USB storage device
Copy PS3UPDAT.PUP (from Downgrade_355.rar) to the root of your USB storage device
Insert your downgrade device into the PS3 USB port nearest the Blu-ray drive
Reconnect the main PS3 power source and turn on your PS3
Your PS3 should boot into Factory/Service Mode
If you decide to chicken out, get out of Factory/Service Mode by using FILE2/Lv2diag.self -- Copy that to your USB storage device, overwriting the other, and power on your PS3 with it connected. Otherwise proceed to the next step
Power down the PS3 using the controller
Remove your downgrade device and insert your USB storage device
Power on your PS3 and the downgrade should start
Your PS3 will automatically turn off upon success
Restart your PS3 and you should be back in Factory/Service Mode

You're now at "3.41(3.56)." From this point it is recommended you downgrade to 3.15 using the method here. Read and follow along carefully. Then upgrade back to the real, official 3.41 using Sony's OFW update found here. Now jailbreak it. Here you can find versions of PSGrade for various devices. You aren't limited to the E3 Card Reader (used in the later tutorial). - source: psx-scene

Its a 3.41 debug FW for people who dont know and so yes if you want to return to a retail ps3 you will need to downgrade lower than 3.41 then upgrade to official SONY fw. and idiots waiting on GeoHot if you havent noticed hes preoccupied atm seeing as SONY is trying to sue him, on top of that well he is against piracy so seriously there will be now loader by Geohot Im sure someone will takeover but maybe not until this SONY crap settles down.

no its not - thats just an example. you can use any device that supports psgrade.

to downgrade to 3.15. You still need to get into service mode. But you need to come out of service mode from the 3.41(3.56) FIRST then put it back into service mode and use the DGR.rar files for the 3.15 downgrade.

Can you Jailbreak your system into Service mode? The mem stick is for the Lv2diag.self/PS3UPDAT.PUP files. Mem Stick / PSP / Mass Storage Device Formatted to Fat32

I like how it says that bricking the PS3 is possible, especially in the "Slim" models that were OFW 3.50 and 3.55 out of the box, then people are saying "HELP PLZ i just installed this now all i get is a yellow flashing light before my ps3 shuts down, can this be fixed ", obviously these kind of people have no idea about how this stuff works, but are so desperate to play pirated games. I was unlucky enough to replace my phat ps3 with a slim with 3.50 out of the box, and would love to downgrade, but the chance of bricking it just aint worth it, would rather spend £300 on games :) but for all the peeps that gets it to work, gratz

There is a way to convert the .PKG files from 3.41 to 3.55, its by using PSL1GHT. I have it but I have get my computer to work with it. Plus find a program that can mount it. Just some info to put out there.

Try this.
Shut the PS3 OFF
Remove mem stick
Put it in your PC and Replace the 3.41(3.56) with the 3.55OFW and restick it back into the PS3 and turn it on.

See what you get.

Actually, you can run backups by using dean's method of patching the eboot.elf and reassembling a pkg.

Downgrade to use backup managers on 3.41. No psn access. They originally thought backup managers would be possible with cfw 3.55 but sony has blocked that capability in 3.55. For now it is a waiting game. It will happen, be patient people. I cant believe how many people just complain BACKUP MANAGER NOW!!! These people have worked hard to develop this stuff and they have risked their freedom, show some appreciation.

worked perfectly on my ps3 slim 3.55 with ti-84 silver
just go to brandonw.net/ps3jb/
download the current version transfer it with ti connect
then start the app press 5 and change the setting so emulate jig says yes save it
then press 1 to start jailbreak
after that ur ps3 sud turn off
now plug in ur usb drive that has to modified pup and lv2.self 1
turn on ur ps3 and nothing sud be on the screen it will be blank for like 10 minutes
then take out ur usb and put the lv2. self 2 on there
and plug it back into ur ps3 and again nothing sud be on ur screen and it will turn off in like a minute
now take everything out and turn ur ps3 on as normal and it sud load up like u just bought it brand new and there u go all do make sure to put a payload on it after the downgrade and make sure to turn emulate jig off after downgrade

NO DONT TAKE OUT THE USB WHEN THE lIGHT IS BlINKING. only take it out when the ps3 has shut it self off. u will brick your console if you remove anything while it is still powered on.

follow this...
1)get the software from brandon wilson for the ti 84
2) transfer the software to ur calculator using TI Connect from ti instruments website.
3) plug it in the ps3's usb slot via mini usb cable
4)go in the app on the calculater and toggle the "Emulate Jig" to "yes" and press save.
5) turn on ps3, it will turn on and show factory / service mode, turn off the ps3 from the controller.
6) with a usb flash drive formated to FAT32 (you can format it in "my computer" by right clicking and clicking format.) put the FIle 1 and the modified PUP file on it only.
7) remove the calculator and plug in the flash drive on the usb at the very top (closest to your bluray drive)
turn on the ps3, it will do its thing and turn off.
8)when its off, u remove the usb drive and take it to your computer and delete EVERYTHING off the flash drive and put the Self file#2 on it BY ITS SElf(so there is nothing on the flash drive except the file#2)
9)plug it back into the ps3 in the same place you did before and power on. let it do its thing( DO NOT GO BY HOW MANY TIMES IT BlINKS, IT WIll POWER OFF WHEN ITS DONE)
10) when its powered off, take the usb out and you have succefully downgraded OR converted your kiosk ps3 to retail.

NOTE: if your ps3's NAND is 256mb then you will probably loose your Bluray Disk Playback. Search up Drl generator to find a fix.

okay, i get into service mode with my ps3break dongle. i shut down with the controller, remove the ps3break and insert my usb with the correct files downloaded from above. every time i boot up, it just goes into service mode. if i use file 2 (lv2diag) i go back into regular mode. why am i not getting the black screen? any advice would be appreciated.

They say it's all systems go for the CECH-2501A Models Running Either 3.40 From Factory or 3.42, If you are at 3.50 From unboxing then don't even bother!

If you are a slim owner, and you want backups but no online play then downgrade, I think I will hold off because they usually circumvent the firmware after with what people need, it just takes time.

I'm not going to downgrade right now, I'm at 3.55 if I wanna downgrade it's nice to know I have the option too ;d + safely.

The version 3.41 has backup managers, alot of them actually. Only the 3.55 doesn't and that's what people want right now.
This downgrade came up because people want to be able to backup their games but thats not possible on the 3.55 so they go to the 3.41 that does.

I upgraded to the 3.55 fm a when it was released.
I than used the Geohot fm and it worked good but it didn't allow for the backup managers to work. About an hour later they released a new version that would but I would have to reinstall the official 3.55 again. Here's where my problem came.

I decided to say screw it and downgrade to the 3.41 firmware using the new release. I put my PS3 into service mode using the power down and restart way. I then selected the update FW and went through the process of it preparing and then agreeing to install the fw.

It went through the install process till about 56% and then shut down after making two beeps and then flashed the red light.

I hit the power button and the red light went solid. I hit the power button again and it turns green for a second or two, then yellow, then it starts flashing a red light over and over and over. Its a never ending process. Can't start the PS3 anymore.

I don't have a dongle like the instructions said because I (apparently wrongly) assumed that it was only used to get into the service menu.

Any ideas of what to do or am I screwed now?

I have a launch PS3 60 gig model.

For anyone who cares: the HTC HD@ can force the 3.55 downgrade even though it was only meant for 3.50.

Just do the normal downgrade procedure with the phone, once it shuts down, insert the new downgrade 3.55 usb that you set up (the one containing Lv2diag.self and PSPUPDAT.PUP modified) turn on the ps3, let the downgrade usb do its thing, once it turns off take out the usb.
Start the ps3 now you're in 480p Factory Mode, check your firmware, mine was 3.41 so I left it there. Continue with the normal ending procedure to get out of factory mode.

I can confirm that this is working:
PS3 320 GB slim (does not have a power switch on the back). It came with 3.41 off the shelf. Can anyone tell me if I can downgrade it to 3.15 (i want OtherOS). I have tried to downgrade it to 3.15 but it did not work (got the semi-brick and I reflashed it with the modified 3.41 and it's working now).

Bluray playback still working.
I have a slim 320 GB that came with fw3.40 from the shop.
So what I did followed the tutorial and then when beeing on 3.56 change the UPDATE.PUP with the OFW 3.40 on my memmory stick, blug it back into my ps3 and start up. Then get out of factory mode and upgrade to 3.41 from XMB

just unplug all cable and reconest again hold power button till it on and two beep till it off
unplug all cable again and turn it on normal without any jb or downgrade device it will bring you in to factory mode which want you to rehash the system software...now connect the sixasix control with usb cable..
download ofw 3.50
put 3.50 update put in your USB : PS3/UPDATE of ur fat32 usb
plug it in into the right ps3 usb port and sytem will ask you too isntall system from usb press select and start buttton and it will install after it finish do not check shutdown button restart your ps3 and it will back in to 3.50 system and you can use your ps3 again

You simi bricke your console. Take the mem stick and put it in your PS download 3.55 from this site and put the PS3UPDAT.PUP file into X:\PS3\UPDATE\PS3UPDAT.PUP Go back into Recovery(Safe Mode) Mode and Reupdate your console.

What ever firmware you were on in the first place you need to use that firmware to get it back up and running.

FW 3.55 >>> Downgrade to to 3.41 (3.56)

From here, make sure you downgrade to the MODIFIED 3.41 from the other thread.

You will run into problems if you try to downgrade from 3.56 to official 3.41. It needs to be the MODIFIED, then from there, reflash OFW from the recovery menu.

Is my ps3 bricked or semi bricked tried the 3.55 downgrade. It showed me 3.41 I was in Recovery mode could not get into factory service mode also had a e3 card tried to boot in factory with it nothing. I made it into recovery mode and did the update. I saw the beautiful 3.41 it installed about half way and shutdown. and now blinking red light. tap it again solid red light tap it again it goes green yellow and back to red blinking. Bad news: I bricked my console yesterday.
Good news: I recovered it and completed the downgrade to 3.41 tonight.

Fat PS3 80 GB CECHE01
I bricked my console by not following the instructions exactly because I did it right away before people started posting about those little in between steps of going into and out of Factory/Service Mode and Retail Mode for each PS3UPDAT.PUP

So reread all the posts and saw CECHE01 was confirmed as OK for downgrade and decided to do all the steps again, from the beginning exactly per the instructions and additional info from others regarding going into and out of Factory/Service Mode and Retail Mode for each PS3UPDAT.PUP to program.

So it worked!!! And I just finished installing a 500 GB HD, so ready to continue as usual and will not be upgrading at all to 3.55 (or higher) unless there is a working BM for 3.55 that is confirmed to work just as good as all the BMs for 3.41.

MAKE folders called what ever you want.

dev_hdd0\game\S NES90000
dev_hdd0\game\N ES090000
dev_hdd0\game\R OMS90000

Put Roms of the Appropriate to the folders

I didn't have to fix mine. I didn't have a bricked PS3. Here's what else you can try.

Take out the HARD DRIVE hook it up to your PC download a program like CompuApps SwissKnife To be able to format that HARD DRIVE to FAT32. You can try that. Or use another HARD DRIVE.

I'm out of suggestions. I don't know what else to tell you. Sending it to Sony to Fix it is gonna cost money. They will know what you done. Ask around your Area to find a Repair shop. They might be able to fix it.

So...after reading all these posts ( just to make sure before i would even start trying) when you have a PS3 with 3.50 firmware from the box in my case its a CECH-2504A 160 GB you better not gonna try this cause you'll brick your PS3...but when i see what happen in the past few days....its going fast enough,to safely say it might be posible in an advanced period of time to get it all done with any PS3, regardless what model or firmware you're in now.

Look, I know most downloaded games will run better under 3.41 but a brick isn't worth the risk.

Can someone please explain the 3rd step to me. I have an e3 card reader device and I've loaded the files provided here for the 3.50 downgrade onto it.

I have a PS3 Fat and it's running 3.55, I also have an extra usb device formatted as fat32.

When I put the e3 card reader into my playstation 3 then I get the message "Cannot read USB device"

I can get to service mode, and power down with a controller. I put the PUP and the first diag file on the root of a USB stick. When I place the USB stick in the farthest right port, CHECHE01, and power on normally. It just boots back into service mode. What am I doing wrong?

I have the following devices:
psjailbreak (authentic) but the site is down so i cant program it
psjailbreak2 (china made) and can program it to downgrade and hack
E3 card reader: Downgraded with this fine

I was on 3.55 ofw and used E3 card reader to downgrade to 3.41 cutom.

I then tried to go lower to 3.15 ofw so i can update to 3.41 ofw and then hack it with either my psjailbrea2 or E3 card reader (im hesitant to use the card reader cuz i saw in a vid that you have to use it everytime you boot ps3)

But as i was trying to downgrade to 3.15 the GREEN LIGHT just stayed blinking for more than 30 minutes. so i turend it off and started it up and then it asked for 3.56 firmware.

Put it back into Factory/Service mode with E3 card reader and put it back to 3.41 custom firmware.

AND THATS WHERE IM AT NOW.

i downloaded the 3.15 ofw file thinking the file i originally used to downgraded might have been corrupted somehow, so im gonna try again right now and hopefully it wont get stuck blinking its green light forever. thanks and wish me luck.

I was able to downgrade tofrom 3.55 to "3.41", however, I can't downgrade further OR update, I go to recovery menu and the PS3 asks to update to 3.56 or higher.
I can't update to 3.55cfw.
any Ideas for a solution besides formatting the hdd or throwing the ps3 off tha balcony?

Delete File 1 from your pendrive and copy File 2 to it. plug the drive, power on the ps3, wait for it to power off, remove the drive, and power on again. Should be back to normal.

There's also "PS3JIG" for the psp. You can use a CFW psp to downgrade a ps3.

dont worry dude, just erase whats on your usb flash drive and put in the file from FILE 2 folder so that you can get out of factory/service mode, it will turn on then turn off, then take out the flash drive and turn it on. its then gonna ask you for firmware 3.56. but dont use 3.56 unless you want to. put the modified 3.41 firmware in the flash drive and then use that, and it will install. ive done it about ten times already cuz im trying to downgrade further from 3.41 to 3.15. so good luck. dont worry

i think its becuz blueray support wasnt added to firmware until 3.41 was introduced, i think thats why, update to original 3.41 firmware and the blueray should work. hopw it helps. peace

yea someone told me that 3.56 firmware will be comi ng out in the end of feb. so yea. plus. psjailbreak dongles suck, cuz i think it doesnt let you update anymore if you decide not to have your ps3 hacked wtf

there are alot of people who cant get to lower firmware like from 3.41 modified to 3.15 original. WHY HAVENT THE HEAD HANCHOS NOTICED THIS LITTLE TREND AND HAVE FIGURED OUT A FIX. MY PS3 IS IN THE LIST OF CONSOLES THAT ITS SUPPOSED TO WORK ON. ITS A 2501A

it's a usb "thingy" that allows you to run "service mode" (similar to windows Safe Mode) once you're in service mode you can run the downgrade program OR if you bricked your ps3, you can plug in a usb drive with the correct software to "force" it to accept the new software similar to when your computer crashes and you have to reinstall the operating system. hope this answered your question.

IF it got bricked trying to downgrade (like me), get a usb drive with the modded 3.41.pup file, if it's a slim ps3 unplug power cord, plug in the usb drive, keep your finger on top of the power button (DON'T press it yet), plug in the power cord, as soon as you see the red light, press the power button and then press the eject button(one after the other), the usb drive is gonna flash maybe 4 or 5 min (depends on the usb drive) and after that time, the ps3 powers off again, remove the usb drive, press the power button and it should go into service mode, now follow step 10 from above tutorial so you can go back to normal.
Note: During "Flashing" you won't get anything on the screen. if drive flashes and does nothing, plug it to computer and open the log file.
