As for people who like to buy stuff from PSN what the hackers should do is what other hackers did on the iphone and ipod touch. The alternative to the Apple App Store was Cydia and Installous which people got the stuff from a different source for free. We should see if we could get a PSN alternative to getting stuff. Loading times on Disc based games...if Sony would allow what MS has done with Xbox360 of allowing you to COMPLETELY install the game to your HDD and play the game from HDD I would not need PSjailbreak

hmm not sure if sony caught on yet about the dns server but i was able to log into my psn after restoring my console back to normal since I was about to sell it and I got my psn tag back and it even let me sign it to get it bt after that no luck signing into psn or friends list... Logan5 doesnt work. You have to put in 67.202.81.137 into the Primary DNS when setting up a connection. It saves and it works everytime you turn your PS3 on.

I paid fucking damn near $400 for the backwards 60gb and what is it now? a fucking overgrown ps2 practically a paper weight seeing as I don't even use the ps2 portion. The most disappointing part is that the laser went out after 30 days of use. I can't afford nor do I feel like paying an arm and a leg when initially thats what I paid so Jailbreak is a damn good alternative.

The box that my ps3 came in clearly stated that one of the features of ps3 was the installation of a linux os. I liked that other os feature very much until sony took it away :(.
I dont give shit about ps network and since they are not playing fair why should i. So from now on no buying games, no firmware updates, yes to homebrew, emulators and stuff like that. GO HOMEBREW!

*cough cough* Erm no it doesnt, firstly Sony removed otheros, so no longer can it be used as a basic PC, a feature Sony boasted and used as one of the MAIN selling points for the console.
It does not support many codecs which the community use, so it cant play video clips.
It cant play PS2 games as Sony removed that.
It cant read memory cards, Sony removed that.
It cant used third party programs ie homebrew.

Sony are still using the "it only does everything" slogan, check out the link, I am surprised sony won court cases regarding the otheros removal when right there the slogan disproves it.

The first and foremost mistake of Sony side lies in adopting a top-dog CPU with unique specs & capabilities (read: very high hack value) whose, OTOH led to above-average losses in selling the SKUs, I don't know if now sony actually get to reduce the loss in SKU production cost, but their strong reaction on the PS jailbreak & groove seems to point that S still sell SKU at loss meaning, they can't afford selling SKU whose never see a game, and this led to the core issue in my eyes, the main root cause of this state of things being that the old "profit from game licenses" business model is practically exhausted, because of the really high cost of game development and content development today, whose force game dev companies to be really cautious in their dev (hence the too many clones and rehashes of successful past mechanism and franchises and zero actual innovations in console games)

OTOH, indie development is hampered generally by the lack of cooperation by the GPU manufactures, because they don't give the specs of their graphic products, esp. knowing that not few indie games/middleware are opensource

I guess that the most mature of people here should understand the implications of what I have pointed above, with a not-so-neutral standpoint (because I'm a full supporter of the opensource...)

I agree and disagree with Ross Johnston. This exploit is going to be used for the most part to run pirated ps3 and ps2 games (eventually) on the system but it also allows developers to create their own custom games (Homebrew) which is huge on the PSP (don't download pirated games, support your developers). Commodore 64 games well thats just nostalgia brother! I hope that people use this exploit for the purposes of homebrew creativity but i'm probably dreaming(....Ps3 Home Brew Idol).

1 - CODECS, what codecs it doesn't support? My PS3 plays most AVI / MOV / WMV / MPG formats, a few using some proprietary codecs aren't supported, but it's not a PC in the 1st place. OK i extended the research about the media format people want to play, you know what i got: .MKV - this isn't a CODEC but a wrapper! & Have anyone run into a problem in running a legal movie on the PS3 (Blu-ray / DVDs / Legal Divx / WMVs / etc..) !? So most unsupported codecs are mostly used for ripped / illegaly converted content.

2 - PS2 Play wasn't removed, it was discontinued, there's a difference. Older models were expensive with such features supported. From a business point of view i agree it's bad but not as long as the PS2 itself is still on the market, i won't be surprised that someday, after the official end of life of thge PS2, SONY to add such features back with a firmware update some won't have for they want to hack 1st!
I have a PS3 with PS2 hardware support (yeah!) ... you know how many PS2 games i have? ONLY 2 - God of War 1 & 2, which i repurchased in HD flavour & most people i know having such feature doesn't use it anymore, mostly because of HD remakes & ZOne limitations.

3 - OMG, another thing removed & it's the end of the world OK, you buy a new PS3 Slim or like mine phat without memory card reader (to do what?) .. just plug an external card reader & voila, cost less than a whole unit having it. Oh btw, even a few cheap wifi USB devices do work on it too ...

4 - Homebrew - WOW the biggest word i can hear on such site .. do you have what it needs to create homebrew apps !? well why do you want this possibility ? did you know that you can design games for PS3 & ask SONY to post on PSN if you are really good at it ? I myself am i jailbreaker of all of my devices. EXCEPT my PS3. Why would you want to jailbreak it? It has so many features and the system is just f*#^ing amazing! So much work has been put into the PS3 and the games are amazing and take a long time to make, so i buy them. Not download a pirated copy. I play older games on my computer and Wii and PSP and iPod touch (all of those are jailbroken) and mainly my PC's. Yea, I am a SONY fanboy and always will be. I bought the PS3 right when it came out because it is so amazing. I use Life with PlayStation to help find cures and I am one of the 32 or 33 that have finshed sending the 500000 whatever things of data. I was the second to finish that. So, dont jailbreak the PS3. It is amazing! i have just installed 3.42. Maybe when a PS5 comes out, ill jailbreak the PS3 because there isnt much support for it. I just think the PS3 is awesome and it cant get better with it being jailbroken.

I agree most people will use the hack to play pirated games, but don't underestimate the playability of older titles. Some of us don't like many of the newer games. I played the original Metroid (which I own two legal copies of)straight through to the end last night on my PSP. Do you really think Johnny Cash will ever completely go out of style? They will still sell his music 200 years from now. Some games and music are timeless. You are correct. I wouldn't buy a Porsche and fit in a tape deck. The point is I don't have too. Instead I can buy cd's with the old music or transfer my old tapes to CD and I want to be able to transfer my old games to new systems. Nintendo still makes a profit selling the original Super Mario Brothers game as a download for the WII. I don't even own a Playstation, but I wanted to point out your gross error there. By excluding that category you are implying that it is an illegitimate category. I don't know if you were just careless or if you have some warped ideology on the issue, but it is COMPLETELY legitimate to run an emulator and do that. You will notice that it is appropriately general enough to include the case where you have to format shift your software from a cartridge or a disk onto the appropriate disk format or memory card needed to run your other games on the Playstation, or to run it on any other hardware that exists now or in the future. Once you bought a game (or other software) you have every right to run it on any system. You can run your PC spreadsheet software on your Playstation, you can run your Playstation games on your PC. You can pull out your old Atari 2600 games and play them on your PC or on your playstation, and you can take your Playstation games and copy them onto a cartridge and play them on your old Atari 2600 console (aside from any memory limitations or speed limitations or output quality limitations the emulator may have to deal with in running it on an ancient Atari 2600 console).

Would it be possible to install features and update through a homebrew method, therefore not disabling the exploit? Kinda like manually installing the separate features leaving the exploit intact. Or maybe even creating a custom firmware that can be installed through homebrew methods that opens up or leave the current exploit working?

I have a phat PS3 system XMB firmware 3.15, my system has been freezing and I want to fix this issue before it freezes for good. Any way, I like having Linux on my system and all the things that can be done with it, possibly more to be done with PS3 and linux in the future if the dongles can backwards your firmware:on the slims also. I know that Sony upgrades firmware if they get their hands on any PS3 system, so I was looking at a sight called Video Game 911. Has any one used this sight for repairs of The PS3 on this forum? If so, do they upgrade firmware or do they forcefully make you upgrade to something that you don't want "like Sony's Executive decision maker/ ruin the fun for everybody person"?

If the game, movie, or music is good enough people will buy, nobody went broke in the ages of VHS, music cassette, or floppy disk. The same companies are still around AND it was easier to copy, no copy protection. Of coarse these companies want to fill a few extra trucks full of money. If your product sucks people will download copy paste and then DELETE. If your product is reasonably good people will support you.

Make them (the games) cheaper and everybody will (buy them).
