PS3 Firmware 3.40 Coming In Hot

Even if Geohot doesn't release a CFW, I am still staying on 3.15 I refuse to let $only win.

He did say how someone could go about doing it dropping a few clues that seemed to involve opening the console taking out ram reading information from it and how to use that information. It's clear he's passing the torch to someone else. Bitten off more than he can chew perhaps? Anyway it's a case of wait it out for someone else to come up with CFW or continue upgrading. I'm still on 3.15 on a *slim* in the forlorn hope that I'lll get custom firmware at some point that will enable other OS etc.....But I'm st rongly considering upgrading soon. Mostly because finances are presently a little tight so I'd rather basically just play lots of demos for a while until I can actually afford to buy some more games

And at the guy who said he stumbled upon the exploit by accident, yeah, his hand accidentally slipped and he typed in all that code, and then he slipped again and soldered all those wires to certain points and accidentally programmed and FPGA to pulse that specific line at 40ns. It was definately an accident -_-

Why not just update, spend some money on a old P4 and put a decent nvidia card in it with hdmi. Bam, instant XBMC/emulators/web browser/etc and you dont have to waste 10gb of data or deal with slow ass video rendering. I have a old P4 I got for 50 bucks and a video card that cost 40. Now i can play what ever emulators i want, use xbmc for video up to 720p, and browse all i want without ever turning on the ps3.

I rather play MW2/BC2 than sit around hoping GeoCockz releases the hack he promised months ago. GeoDouche, and others, fucked us out of using linux and now its time to move forward.

I'm on 3.15 because I'm sick of these utterly useless updates. I bought the PS3 for gaming and now it won't even do that. I've no real interest in Linux either, I just want to play online without ever again wasting time and drive space on updates nobody will ever use.

I'm going to upgrade soon. I've spent £250 on this console that I'm not using to it's full potential any more. What's the point in having it and not using it properly before the console becomes obsolete. What irritates me is the loss of the 10gb with the linux partition on :( But this might be a good thing if it becomes recoverable with a future hack...

I'd rather have my PS3 Upgraded than wait for an eternity for a Hack. It's not that I've lost hope on Geohot but yeah, I love him cuz he's the iPhone god. I don't really care if GeoHot doesn't make a hack for the PS3. I mean look, the GameCube, its mod chip only came out a year or two before the Wii was announced and released. =)) I'd rather stick with LEGIT GAMES because I dunno... These People Really Deserve The Money Because THEY SPENT SWEAT, BLOOD, AND BRAINS in developing these [SUPER AWESOME] games.

Put yourselves on the developers and programmers shoes and imagine what you'd feel when your game gets pirated. :))

I had to update. Most of my games are played online, so losing online functionality ruins my PS3.
Once someone hacks one firmware, we may just be able to stick a FPGA on the thing to mod it, so I'm going to keep updating. It won't be as easy or as simple as a WiiKey, but I believe it's possible. If you think about it, almost all of the data used by the ps3 passes along some PCB trace at some point and is stored on RAM somewhere, whether it's on-chip memory or a separate chip. We just need to swap some code out or tweak a few bytes here and there to get it running custom code.

I think you're wrong about geohot, he definately understands the PS3, if he didn't he wouldn't have gotten as far as he did. My take on things is that all of you little bitches calling him geocock and bad mouthing him because he was taking so long discouraged him from wanting to try and create a CFW. I think we all shot ourselves in the foot, well not all of us (just the immature litte kids who don't understand what it takes to hack a system like the PS3) all we can do now is hope that someone else out there won't mind the abuse.

Geohot promised a hack for the PS3 3.15 Fat and I'm still waiting. Geohot promised a new jailbreak for IOS4 for the Iphones an Itouches with new bootrom and I'm sill waiting. It is getting very difficult to hold my believe in Geohot so I really hope to hear something serious from him in the near future.

Sony is really stupid for what they have done. I bought a Sharp TV instead of a Sony, I bought a HTC Android phone instead of a Sony android phone and in the future I will do that with all my gadgets and equipment. No Sony for me anymore. Ow, and I hacked my PSP (and sold all my original games after making a back up) because of the stupid move from Sony. I hope the people at Sony are happy now? and no, i will never buy a PS4 in the feature. Most games for the PS3 are ports from other consoles so I will invest my money in a decent PC for now. And no, it is not a Sony PC...

Richard I don't want to sound like a dick but i don't think Sony cares whether any of us stops using their products. Plus Sony is like the Walmart from the episode of South Park which has a power over everybody. it's so hard not to buy anything from Sony even if it's something really small.

I use 3.15 still. I'm about to enter the hack scene just to "see" some progress come out of all this. I don't like to assume the Geohot is capable or will ever produce anything else, if it's his fault, or if it's sony's fault. I don't care. I think there is a lot of wasted potential on these forums. I think more energy is wasted crying about stuff out of our hands than we ourselves produce from the scene we constantly take from. I don't know much about the PS3, but Geohot did leave us enough info about the system to do it. He was in the spotlight, a lot of pressure was on him. I'm sure Sony threatened him in some fashion. Overall, however, he is a punk for not going through with what he said. I don't remember there ever being a promise. He has a life, and that in itself is respectable. I know, I have dependents, I hope all of us realize our priorities in life and our potential and achieve big.

Now enters in the next big era of PS3 hacks. A lot of hope was lost, but a lot of us haven't given up. I personally don't think in the near future everyone is going to need 3.15. But if you want to contribute or not necessarily hack the internals, it will be handy. I'm going to link my pc and the ps3 tonight (well, more like when convenient) and start moving at a decent pace gathering info. The architecture isn't new but the configuration is (atleast to me). This isn't alien technology!

Yeah, you can't play new games either. The console advertised as doing everything, does nothing. Not even the most basic features we bought it for. I couldn't care less about the non-gaming related gimmicks, I simply don't want to risk my 60gb PS3 on junk (and there is a risk because Sony is trying to destroy all non-Slims).

Don't hold your breath, your not going to get one and probably never will. There already is a custom firmware but geohot or the people who know how to make it wont release it because sony would be able to patch it in days. It would mean they would have to start from square one. Alot of coders are mad because the way he made his CFW was not his method. Geohot will not be coming back to this scene. So to all the pricks that are waiting for their ISO loader can choke on a weeny.

It really sucks that they would take away OtherOS. My PS3 was used by my 11 year old as a PC. You'd think they could just make the Linux installs follow certain anti-hack guidelines so that those of us that want to use it lawfully can still do so. The vast majority of people that use the OtherOS feature are not hackers. So why do the majority have to suffer because of a bunch of assholes? It's just wrong. There has to be a better way. The PS3 was a brilliant concept, way ahead of the 360. Sony should not abandon the OtherOS feature because of some assholes. There has to be a better solution. They make great HW and are real visionaries. They just need to put their heads together and figure out how to enable the feature with features that make the OS secure against hacking. That is, only those OS distros with secure features enabled will work on the platform. Does that not make sense?

Technically you're not giving sony money for that 15+ hour game, it goes to the developers... mostly. Then again you actually have the CHOICE to not buy the game at all; not because of cfw, hacks, or anything for that matter, but because you simply don't want it... period.

i have 6 ps3 lool i have my 60gb upgrade to 250gb on my 46" sony bravia and is up to date for play online and i have one 60gb with 3.15 update on my desk so just buy other ps3 and enjoy the sistem loool oh the others ps3 are special edition they are on the box loool hahahaha

It offers alot of cool stuff, for example a free demo of infamous. It is the FULL game but its only available for 60 minutes. It only costs as much as xbox live does for a year and it lasts for a year. It also gives you discounts on some already available games and add-ons. Some games are even free, but right now it's not alot of options.

The chances of geohotz releasing the otheros patch is about the same as Dark_AleX releasing a 6.xx firmware for psp. Just buy a bluray drive for your pc and move on. Sony has realized a potential piracy problem and sealed the hole instead of fixing it.

Hey the way i see it, what we need is a mass sony downsize. Think about it; it would suck for the workers, but there would be a bunch of discrunteled workers with lots of inside info. :)

Alperen you will not have 3.15 on your old HDD the firmware is not stored on the HDD at all. what ever source you got your facts from is correct. I recommend to you not to update cause i have a feeling someone will step in within the next month or 2 and have something...i myself find it worth waiting for cause i only use my ps3 for 1 player games and to connect to my basement media pc to watch all videos that i download in my room.

Yesterday say the death of my innocence (and I'm 42), as after three months of getting a good backup of my game o/s together (i had large hd in my fattie), deciding on the Linux install I wanted to use, etc, I finally partitioned out the 10GB for the Other O/S install, reloaded my Game O/S backup and everything appeared to be in order there. I then went to load my Dragon Age Origins save game, the only game I play on the PS3 of late, and surprise surprise, i received a message it could not restore my saved games because they were dependent upon certain DLC being on my hd which apparently wasn't included in the 'full backup' i did of my PS3 prior to formatting. To resolve this I had to redownload the content from the PSN which, of course, requires a PS3 running a 'safe' version of the firmware (like the recent one which links Facebook accounts to PSN accounts...now that's what i call SECURITY!)...that was about it for me...i conceded and lobotomized my PS3 to the current 3.40. I'm sure Sony is happy they broke another one of us and I now have a $400, corporate-crap console which will do Sony's bidding like a good corporate zombie. What really bothers me the most about all this is a) I realized one does not OWN anything when they PURCHASE DLC from Sony as despite there being on warnings about specific firmware version being required at the time of purchase, you must have it installed to get most of your DLC back after a system crash (which may be caused by a required firmware update that was poison to begin with as in my first console that was bricked after an update and b) the majority of people these days are idiots if they think Facebook and Twitter integration is worth giving up Linux for. All the recent firmware updates have just added more, corporate P.O.S.'s for various Sony media partnerships and nothing of any inherent 'value', like the ability to run another O/S. I had Sony on a pedestal up until this point but they're clearly just another corporate moneygrubbing operation now like the rest of them. Good luck with your stupid Google TV, I hope it was worth upsetting your truly 'technical' base of loyal customers.

Sony is not M$ dont EVER us a $ in their name... and seriously geohot is not the best hacker out there... hes just the only person stupid enough to release his hacks to the public.

I finally gave up on holding out and let the PS3 upgrade itself (by removing my localised DNS hack and web server which made it think it didn't need an update).
The particular feature I most wanted was remote play from a PC, I don't give a **** about facebook; I also had credit in limbo on the PS store, and there are some games which are only downloadable.

Naturally I am pretty peeved with Sony. It's not just their killing of OtherOS, but things like their rootkit and other nasty activities. I will *never* buy another Sony product.

I have a Sony camcorder which, when it wears out will not be replaced with a Sony. I would once have considered a DSLR from Sony, but they lost that business too. I will be buying a separate bluray player, when I do it won't be a Sony. I might have considered the X10 android phone once, but the chances of Sony stealing features from it are too high to even consider it. I recently bought a Panasonic TV and specifically excluded Sony from my choices.

In total I reckon Sony could lose upwards of £3000 of sales to *me* over the next 5 years. Quite a few people ask my opinions of electronics goods, and you know what, I shall deter them from buying Sony too which could cost them even more.

I can imagine their are Sony employees who read these websites and hear opinions of one-time customers like me and who probably despair at their company's stupidity. If you do, tell your lords and masters that they have created a real stink and their actions are costing them revenue and possibly your job!

One of the ongoing complaints I hear from them is the amount of time required to re-encode a movie into a format they can actually store on disk. Another is that they really don’t care about many of the DVD “extras” (language options, etc.) and hate the fact that they’re stuck with storing this info on disk as well.
