PS3 Firmware 3.30 Released

Update: Reported around the globe are more 3.30 features; features that seemingly went unmentioned on the PlayStation (US) Blog...

You can now select [PC] as an option under [Remote Play Settings] > [Register Device]. When you select this option, you will be able to use the remote play feature to operate your PS3 system from future models of the VAIO PC. Details of this feature will be announced on the official VAIO website at vaio.eu/playstation in May 2010.
You can now select [Bitstream (Direct)] or [Bitstream (Mix)] under (Settings) > (Video Settings) > [BD Audio Output Format (Optical Digital)].

Remote Play for PC? You don't say... Well if it's VAIO's only, you can bet Dashhacker's ORP will live on; I'm talking for all you non-VAIO owners, because VAIO-only just ain't viable.

Just booted my PS3 to notice Sony has released 3.30... No features removed but... Well, I don't even know what to say... Trophy sorting? C'mon... Really? In addition to that, which is better news if you're one of the few sporting a 3D TV, Lempel mentions this update readies the system for 3D stereoscopic gaming; 3D re-releases of games will follow. Sometime in June you'll be able to download 3D versions of Wipeout HD, Motorstorm: Pacific Rift, and Super Stardust. No sense in rushing 3D Blu-ray [movie] support I guess, considering Avatar 3D doesn't release till '11. Bummer. PS3 System Software 3.30:

Trophy enhancements –- Now you can more easily sort trophies in the [Trophy Collection] and [Comparing Trophy] sections. Sorting can be done with [Trophy Collection] in the [Game Category] and also when comparing trophies with your friends in the [Friend Category]

Trophy Folder (Title List) can be sorted by game name/ by title according to the date in which you earned your last trophy (ascending/descending)
Add-on list (Group list) can be sorted by original/the date in which you earned your last trophy (ascending/descending)
Trophy list can be sorted by original/trophy name/grade/date of obtaining the trophy (ascending/descending)

Might as well update guys. Geohot is just trolling the ps3 community. Nothing substantial is going to come out of the exploit for a few years. When the hackers TRULY hack the FW, it will surely apply to all new updates just like the PSP.

P.S. I do feel bad for the people that make use of linux for coding, emulators, backup PC. Now your 10GB partition is defunct unless you fully format it on a PC. You can't repartition on PS3 for some dumb reason.

Also, it is optional in the sense that you don't need to update, but mandatory as in you need it to use some features, such as PSN.

this is just a checkmate move on Sony's part. everyone upgraded before, knowing there was a possibility to downgrade back to the previous firmware to use Geohot's hack. Now if you upgrade, you can only downgrade to the firmware you had to update to before, so if that firmware successfully blocks Geohot's shit, then that's the end of the line for anyone who gets stuck there. I'm only going to do it because I have a backup system that I haven't upgraded, so take THAT Sony!

As far as I can see, it doesn't actually add any 3D features. It just "preps the system" for future features which will likely require their own firmware updates in any case (i.e. it's entirely pointless, and just there to attract people's attention away from the real purpose).

Hidden security update for fat PS3s maybe? I noticed someone mentioning that they also changed the EULA to add extra notes, AFTER they already removed other OS in 3.21. I use my otheros feature to play with my cell processor, im a computer programmer and i enjoy it, which is also why i was thrilled with Geohots ps3 hack, thus i will not update. I do also use my ps3 to play games, and i miss the psn access and online gameplay, so i was hopping for this custom firmware to come out, but now, sony has a new term of service.

according to its new TOS for update 3.30, sony can (and most probably will) shove silent updates in your system that can add or remove features and contents any time you are signed in. Meaning that if sony wants, it can delete your whole ps3 with a silent update and leave you with an expensive paper weight. But its use is probably gonna be different: Should they have any way to detect you have other os and the most recent firmware, they can just delete the other os while you are playing an online game without you ever noticing. Every time you have something allowing you to play backup games, if you sign in and sony can see it, they can remove it without warning.

What this means is, CFW updates are probably going to take a lot longer to release because now ppl that do them, Geohot or anyone else, are gonna have to be 100% sure that sony cant just see the update and remove anything that shouldnt be there for that fmw version.

so, to sum it up, for ppl that were waiting for the CFW to come out to be able to one day play backup games and use psn at the same time, know it will take quite some time for that to work, if it ever do, and if you dont have the patience to wait A LOT, you should just update already. This will be a long and hard battle and if you really dont have a good motive to use otheros, you really dont need it.

Ok let me just say Im a tax prep and i have already said this b4. If a peson owes money to the IRS and State (if their state requires Taxes) then yes you have till the 15th of april to file b4 you get hit with penalties and late fees. Last time I checked PSP and PS3 were 2 completly different types of hardware and the most noteable difference between them is PSP was simple to hack whereas PS3 is still to be seen running anything that isnt legit software, yea we have all seen a video of a so called CFW, but that to me just looks like version and mac spoofing, nothing more.

Blaming Geohot is a cop out! It was really inevitable that someone would unlock it, taking away OtherOs is a bitch move on Sony's part. They would've done it anyway, i'm sure they were waiting for the right time and the patsy Geohot played along. I think the thing you dont understand here is that PS3 is an online gaming console first, that had OtherOS tagged on for people who wanted to experiment with the Cell processor and to use it as a cheap but powerfull server option, its use as a PC on the other hand is a bit crippled with Sony not allowing access to the GPU but that is mostly down to Nvidia not wanting to share info with consumers about theyre GPU. So from what you have been saying, I can see your a gamer since the main thing your concerned about is games, if otheros was never in the PS3 you would still want an ISO loader, so saying they havent given you much option is just false... Gamers having problems deciding which option they should choose should go with the update, anyone wanting to program PS3 or use as a server, dont update... gamers holding onto OtherOS and complaining get a life.

My PS3 wont read any of my games.
Today (22 april, 4pm), it requested a firmware update to 3.30 when I started it with Battlefield BC2 (wich was already inside the drive), so i did it the same way I allways do (by game request).
After a little while playing (I guess when it needed to read the BR disk), It froze.
I waited for 5 minutes, until I had to switch it off (40gb ps3, 2yr old perfectly functional until now).
When I was back on It wouldn´t read any of my discs anymore... I´ve read that other owners are having the same problem, but dont know what to expect.
Is it ruined or fixable????

If I understand what I read elsewhere, they changed an agreement AFTER removing the OTHER OS. That means they already know THEY FUCKED UP!!! BAD SONY!

I'm not a rocket scientist, but you can't change a contract after it's been agreed to WITHOUT BOTH PARTIES PERMISSIONS!!! Duh Sony... you're setting yourself up for a BIG CLASS-ACTION LAWSUIT.

Anyone else see a problem brewing here? I mean, c'mon...

1.) Sony remove an ADVERTISED FEATURE from all PS3 PHATS because of a possible security breach. Problem is, anyone who is hacking isn't updating, and OTHER OS is needed to apply the hacks... so, the only people getting hurt are the ones who legitimately need OTHER OS and PSN simultaneously.

And they can't stop access to hackers, because they (the hackers) already have what they want (OTHER OS), and don't give a damn about PSN...

2.) Sony changes a contract that's been in effect for years now, to attempt to cover tracks of legality in removing OTHER OS... AFTER removing it. Meaning it was altered without consent from the end user (1 of the 2 parties). Illegal in any court, a contract is a contract. Digital or hard copy.

3.) Removal of OTHER OS in essence means the PS3 no longer constitutes as a "computer", something harped on to the point that they were able to avoid millions of dollars in taxes over seas... does that mean that these PC-3s are now "defunct"? Refunds and back-taxes galore. Hear about Amazon's partial refund already?

These are just a few thoughts... :)

no, but it is in the end user agreement which you agree to abide by when downloading/installing any new firmware update. It says something to the effect that Sony reserves full right to alter software as needed. they backed it up with a legal bs like "otheros might lead to a security issue". by doing that they've covered their bases legally.

although i've heard of people that bought the ps3 from amazon.com some of them have filed complaints saying it isnt the same product that was advedrtised when they bought it, and therefore it's "defective". amazon.com has confirmed that they will be giving out partial refunds to make amends for this......my guess is theyll go after sony themselves from a retail perspective, and when that happens maybe sony will learn

dude, im srry, but that looks a lot like what happened to me a while ago. When checking at the time, i was sure it was a recent update, but in fact it was my blu-ray driver lens that stopped working. I started my ps3 with MGS 4 inside, and it showed MGS 4 there, i went to play, played it for a little bit, and it just froze. After i rebooted the ps3, it couldnt read any blu-ray disc anymore. (it was able to read a ps2 game, but my reader had a different lens for dvd and blu-ray)

I recommend you either look for a tec support for your ps3, they can diagnose it and repair, or if you know how to do it yourself, buy a new reader for your driver and change it, but then you have to be sure that is the problem.

If you look on youtube you can find some videos showing the problem, and you can see if its similar to yours. Again, srry, and gl.

Actually, I bought it because of the hardware, and what happened with the PSP. It's just a matter of time before I have PSN and emulation on the same system... Hell, from what I understand, the PS3 has the horsepower to play anything except 360 games. Although, drive alterations have to be made to play Wii and Gamecube.

And no, I pay for all my games. I have 100's of hard copies of NES, Sega, PS, PS2, Gamecube, Wii, Gameboy... you get the idea. I pay for my shit. ;)

I was looking foward to continuing the use of otheros as a simple computer to access the web on my XBR lcd via firefox, I for one have to say that iso loaders are killing the gaming industry and as much as people promise to not use isos the masses are liars and will download as many games as they possibly can. I say the hell with it and continue to support the various developers that put hard years of work for our entertainment, I know many of you wouldnt do it for free.

On another note, considering Sony removed the otheros feature is it to much to ask Sony to greatly improve the online browsing experience using the internal browser, for me that would offset the loss of otheros.

The hack that geohot was working on was to give the linux community access to the whole system i.e the GPU which geohot claimed Sony locked, when infact it is nVidia who dont want to share info with consumers about its GPU, did his hack give access to the GPU? yes it did, but they still cant do anything with it, because a driver is needed and drivers are hard to code, go read what geohot said about the driver, obviously not much thought went into what geohot was doing, he should have just kept his mouth shut until something real could come from all this.

Hehe ... realisticly speaking sony could do mini update verifying on every login to psn ,i don't think spoofing would work becase a hacker can't keep up with daily or three times weekly mini updates.These updates could be small with just a delined list as to check stats without the need to roll out a new fw revision number so sony really don't need to give you anything with an update and if they do some kind of verification over psn at login then hacking would just not work.

Just remember that sony got fucked bigtime with the psp but the psp is not live at all times like the regular ps3 connected to the router and the ps3 is quite a bit more advanced ,for instance sony could really change/remove or do any number of things online at any given time to the ps3 software ,sony will i am sure have loads of stuff they can do to prevent cfw for live consoles.

I recon we should all update ,yes i know otheros is good in it's own right but it's not worth losing psn online gaming and the other stuff we all do ,buying extra stuff for our games in the store ,if geohot can do cfw then he will be able to sort it out at a later date for later ofw users ,he would really need to think ahead about the messures sony have in place as well ,look guys go enjoy your games/multimedia console before ps4 is out.

Assuming that that geohot wont update in a couple months and during those months sony updates, geohot's custom firmware will be useless. And looking at the progress with the CFW with the ps3 I'm pretty sure this is going to be a long stretch. My advice is simple, Update unless you're like me and don't use PSN much. I honestly don't know much about PSN, hell I never played an online game on my ps3 before since the only reason I bought it for was Final Fantasy. Sony is going to be going all out on the ps3 to prevent CFW. The reason for this is because they don't want to make the same mistake as they did with the PSP. Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me.

I SAW Sony's SERVICE CENTER, how they flashed my PS3 After Brick, They connected "PROGRAMMER" thru PS3 LAN and completely Flashed my PS3 for about 5 min, to previos firmware, but they can flash to any! So this is it!

There are so many many interesting THINGS for ps3 already did, and ITS easy to use! But nobody leaked it!

You dolt. 3.21 blocked Geo's hack. 3.30 might add security layers, but having root access to the PS3 will allow Geohot to see these security additions on the root level, as well.

Once someone understands the update files (take the PSP, for example), eliminating security is just a matter of time. The only thing that Geohot won't be able to easily alter/fake is something on Sony's servers.

Well i updated ,can't be bothered waiting ,i have other systems including a pc for emulation (psp/tvout/snes/controller) (xboxmediacentr e) and i don't care for pirate copy games ,i would rather buy mine ,i think i appreciate them better that way ohh and i won't miss any kind of linux in the slightest ,already tested them and not impressed.

The only thing i will be doing or should i say not doing from now on tho is buying into sony psn store ,it's a big waste of money and the online gaming sucks still untill we in the uk get regional servers but that will never happen,i hope sony don't remove any more features like remote play as i would sell my ps3 in an instant but hey you still cant blame sony for all the hackers.

Sony need to update the webrowser it got so many buggs and causes so many system crashes. Sony is using the webbrowser to also marketing the console. So why dont they f***ing do something.

New flash player has to be included.

The PS3 WLAN bandwidth are unstable and if this is an intern problem causing by the 5200 RPM Harddrive i dont know. I will buy a 7200 in the future to test or an SSD if its possible.

They also need to enable mkv file support. Even cheap blueray players today are able to pick up that format. They also need to update the codecs, sometimes the DiVX player are not able to pick up sound.

Even if people say there's more important stuff they should update so are those I listed the most common, which must be so easy to fix. sometimes I think they are just lazy.

Please be aware that there is a big problem going on with all the older machines sony are so sure that it had nothing to do with the last update but i beg to differ.
After that last update all my games would start then just freeze this has not happened to everyone so sony says then its ok due to the fact that 10,000 people make up not even 1 percent of the playstation market so that makes it ok.

I foolishly updated my firmware to 3.30, seeing there's no firmware downgrade I might contact a service center hoping they wont charge me to reset to the original firmware (they have a machine for doing that). I believe that is my best option now. To all the angry guys: I feel your frustration but we should be glad Geo Hot is even working on this, if you are tired of waiting go learn how to reverse engineer the play station yourself so we can downgrade our firmware. I would find a way to backup the firmware before I messed with it and bricked the system if I had the patience which I don't.

I'm having a problem with a high bit-rate movie created from a 1080P with mkv2vob. Now the high bit-rate should be up-converted by the ps3 and look amazingly real but now it just looks sandy.
