Fix Your Busted-up Blu-ray Drive

If you're like me you've put serious cycles through your PS3, perhaps damaging some internals, like the Blu-ray drive for instance. My old fat, 256MB NAND PS3 suffered this loss. Anyway, good news: It is now possible to "(re)marry" Blu-ray drive boards to other consoles, meaning there is still hope for your thought-to-be dead drive.

It's a miracle! This remarrying technique stems from the Mega hiper ultra fantastico Team ... for real, that's their name. And these instructions courtesy of Mark Webber:

Put these onto a blank usb stick (not the devusb folder, just it's contents) & add a 2.30 PUP FILE!
Put in the service mode dongle and get into factory service mode.
Put the newly created USB stick into port 0 (closest to the reader) and run.
After you run the initial remarry process, do not take it out of factory service mode.
Put a BD disc in and run it on the PS3. (This restores your DRL files!)
Then you can take it out of factory service mode.
Launch as normal.

I have not done extensive testing yet, but have just remarried a BD board from a 60gig launch to a 40gig console.

Wait! Before you try anything, know this: You're attempting this procedure at your own risk. There are different Blu-ray drives/boards for different PS3 models. Attempting to marry a board designed for another model may produce unexpected and/or negative results, possibly causing irreparable damage. And DO NOT attempt this on consoles running firmware 3.56 or later -- you will be stuck in service mode indefinitely. It is necessary to copy files there where they should is. These files are lost if to make downgrade the software.
It is necessary to return these files into place that PS3 showed Blue-Ray films.

It is required to recover some files =)
1) OCRL1 & OCRL2 (dev_flash3/data-revoke/ocrl/)
2) DRL1 & DRL2 (dev_flash3/data-revoke/drl/)
3 CRL1 & CRL2 (dev_flash3/data-revoke/crl/)

p.s.
Before making downgrade, save these files a recovery case.

If it is software based and anything like the original Xbox/Hard drive (drive was married based off the EEPROM), then the drives should be interchangeable given you do the process over and over. Eventually, CFW may be able to get around this.

When the drives fail it's usually never the controller board unless CFW messed it up. You usually need to replace the laser pickup and assembly not the controller board.....

This is what fails for most people still running a release fat model PS3s....

You don't just run a program you have to physically remove a controller board from a working drive and put it into the broken drive.....THEN RUN THIS PROGRAM......

No that is a mechanical problem but you can try this.....

Turn on your PS3 without a disc in it hold down the eject button until the blue light starts flashing. That will attempt to realign the eject mechanisms. If it doesn't work then either the motor is burnt out that moves the arms or they are broken....

It won't fix your problem you need a working bluray drive or controller board of the exact same model to replace the broken one first off.

Secondly your controller board is probably fine the Laser is what wears out you just need to find a laser pickup with the assembly for your model ps3 online.....

I PURCHASED 10 PS3'S WITH DISK READ ERROR ON EBAY OVER A SPAN OF 3 MONTHS.5 WERE REPAIRED WITH NEW LASER AND 5 STILL WOULD NOT READ WITH NEW LASERS INSTALLED.AFTER MUCH FRUSTRATION AND COFFEE I FOUND OUT IT WAS BECAUSE THE LOGIC BOARDS WERE BAD.

until now the only way to fix this was to rework the spansion chip off the bad board and onto a good one however if it was the spansion chip which was bad you were sol and you ps3 was like sony f@cked.I can not thank the dev team enough.btw most of the time for me it was the driver ic chip which was bad.

Do not try this if you are running the 3.60 spoofer. You will be stuck in service mode as I now am unless if something knows something that I do not. Is there a way to exit service mode with the spoofer installed?

Update: Never mind. I forgot that I have to use the closest usb port to the BD drive for it to work. lmao

if anyone can help me out I'd appreciate it. I did the downgrading to 2.30 but now I'm having trouble getting it into service mode again. on 2.30 there is no option to turn off console thru xmb menu. I'm using ipod nano 1g. I got into service mode no problems the first time but now it won't with 2.30. can somebody please tell me what im doing wrong?

i have done this process FOUR times now here are my mistake so you do not have to make them.first off if your on 3.42 firmware or high see tutorials on how to downgrade and NOT lose blu ray playback.the important thing when you are downgrading to modified 3.41 is NOT to let the ps3 fully boot to menu screen three basic step are putting the downgrade dongle in the left usb after turning the rear power switch off and on.then power then eject like your jailbreaking.your dongle will light up for 20-40 sec then the ps3 will shut down.you will be in factory service mode .at this point place the usb with modified pup and jaicrab Lv2diag.self in the right most usb REMOVE THE USB DOWNGRADER.OTHERWISE FOR ME IT BOOTED IN TO PS3 MENU SCREEN IN FACTORY SERVICE MODE.

no. bluray drives have no say whether your ps3 plays ps2. it all depends on if u have the original ps3 with emotion engine chip
