Another ScummVM Port for PS3 Released

Submitted by greg; June 13, 2011

Developer bgK is picking up where lousyphreak left off, releasing a new port of ScummVM for PS3. ScummVM, if you didn't know, stands for "Script Creation Utility for Maniac Mansion Virtual Machine." And that translates to playing classic point-and-click adventures on a variety of devices ... and not just Maniac Mansion. For ScummVM to work you require the original data files from whatever game, and I'm talking about games like Day of the Tentacle, the original (non-PSN version) Sam & Max, Monkey Island, Zak McKracken, Leisure Suit Larry, King's Quest, Space Quest... The list goes on and on... There are tons of playable LucasArts and Sierra AGI/SCI classics. Check this compatibility guide for the full list of supported games. Now this particular PS3 port is considered a test version -- don't expect everything to be 100% playable. You'll likely encounter instability and bugs in some cases. Hopefully bgK continues hammering out updates because ScummVM is a definite must-have for anyone who vegged these games in the 90s. Visit scummvm.org for more ports for more platforms. It's nice but as long as I have to use a controller scummvm will be useless, for me, on consoles. I love adventure games but pixel hunting with a d-pad or analog stick is a pain. tap left - moved the cursor too far. tap right - cursor moves right too far. arrrgh this scenario is maddening.

the most powerful video game console on the market and there is still a group of individuals who would rather play text adventures on it.

Unfortunately, stupid (read: ignorant) people are the base of the scene. So many dumb questions asked and statements made every day no matter which scene you follow.

Obviously, the people who are creating the programs are creating programs they want and things that are good practice to develop for the PS3. Most of the guys contributing to the scene have a college degree and many many years of experience in the field. And, each one of those people can't be Programmer Extraordinaires . Not everyone can be a god of hacking. A Wii emulator built for the PS3 from the ground up would easily take a year of development from a group of well educated programmers. Is it even worth it? Do you even know if the PS3 could emulate the Wii? If it was as easy as you made it sound, winston, then, yes you idiot, we would have all that stuff. Do you think people are sitting around thinking of ways to not release good emulators? winston, you just sound so dumb.

Ugh. I think it's time to move to PC gaming. Even though to get performance on PC compared to PS3 or Xbox isn't cheap, I think it's worth it.

What do you think?

Because the firmware isn't on the hard drive its stored in NAND flash memory.
