PS3 Internal HDD Decryption via Linux

Graf's still goin' hard... Continuing on his PS3 hacking effort, graf_chokolo, despite being PS3-less and his ongoing legal battle with Sony, has figured out a means of permanently enabling/disabling the PS3 HDD encryption while operating under Linux. He has committed those tools to his git repository over at dukio, and I quote verbatim:

Guys, take a look at ps3dm_sm set_del_def_encdec_key command. You can disable/enable virtual FLASH/internal HDD encryption with that And by patching HV process 9 (which sets ATA keys before loading GameOS) you can disable it permanently. It means you could swap your internal HDD and use it on another PS3. But you have to restore the content on it after disabling encryption because all data will be encrypted of course. Soon i will implement ENCDEC device driver for PS3 Linux and you will be able to experiment with ATA encryption. ENCDEC device is responsible for VFLASH/HDD encryption on PS3. Well for one thing. If you did get fat modle ps3 and payed the big bucks for it 600$ like myself and others have then you know Sony charged you for this option when you first got ur PS3. I for one like to have something i payed for do it. They charged me for it so i want it to work and do it. Linux is another OS makes ur ps3 into a PC. Just takes a little codeing and you can make do alot of stuff. You can play alot of games on linux they made alot of emulator's for it.

either graf is incredibly smart or incredibly stupid. Internet fame or life of financial ruin plus jail time. As long as its not us were fine with it right.

i agree, i paid 499$ for my ps3, and it seems to me that i (and everyone else) should be entitled to what was offered to us when we purchased the unit. Taking away the OS feature was a move Sony should have never done in the first place, if you thought it would enable piracy why put the feature on it. I paid my fair share and I want my features. I wish Geohot and everyone else the best, I hope sony learns something from this. I have never went and purchased a vehicle that goes 120 mph to drive that fast on the way home and the company calls me a week later and makes a change so it only goes 65 mph. YOU sold ME exactly what I was looking for. Leave MY features ALONE!!! I Hope The Devs can bring back OS AND MORE!!! Sony - 0 Devs +1 Lets turn that +1 into +100!!!

Wow. My little bro's gonna be pissed... He just formatted his drive to use on a "new" old phat 60GB because the one he had YLoD and, through numerous trials, refuses to work anymore. In any event, good job, sir. Maybe this will lead to HDD backups that don't take 8+ hours to make (I've personally done this twice now).

I'm totally new to the hacking scene, but does this mean I can install Linux on my current PS3, and put in my old HDD - full of precious saved data - and use the files?
