20 Questions with a Dev Rewind

Submitted by tbag; July 04, 2012

By now most of you have seen our 20 Questions with a Dev series that has been running for the last few months and I hope youve enjoyed reading them.  But lets take some time to go over a few of them and see what its all about.Weve had quite a few big name developers as well as members of the homebrew community and a few up and comers who Im sure will be making a big name for themselves in the future sit down and go 20 questions with us in an attempt to give everyone a little more insight into who they are and what they think about the current state of the scene and its future.  So as always I would like to thank them for their hard work and the chance to work with them in these articles. So lets do a little review for everyone else who hasnt been following the series or just missed out on some of them.

Wololo was the first dev who agreed to do a 20 Questions spot and is best known for his work with the PSP HBL and its sister port VHBL for the vita that will allow you to play PSP homebrew on the Vita.  Lets take a look at what he had to say when I asked if it was time to move from the PSP and work on developing for the Vita.

Absolutely not. The PSP, as of now, is the best portable device for emulation and homebrews. People like Coldbird are also actively working at making the device even more attractive with community driven networks. In a few months we should be able to play online on many PSP games without connecting to the PSN.

Next was Coldbird who most of you would recognize as one of the developers from the PRO custom firmware team, and their newest creation Prometheus which allows you to play adhoc PSP games online with people from around the world. Lets take a look at what he had to say about the frustration he faced while working on its infant state as PRO online.

There've been several times I thought it was impossible to pull of... PRO Online is in fact older than PRO CFW itself. In 3.XX CFW times the problem was the lack of full firmware control, caused by the closed source approach of M33. Later on it was the lack of a universal adhoc loader that made my code too specific to a single title (God Eater only).

And then the multithreading issues popped up... also let's not forget the whole bunch of people in ps2dev forums that, back in the early days, said it was impossible to do. It took me about 20 full code rewrites from ground zero to get to the state it is in now and it makes me smile every time I think back to those times when I nearly gave up on it.

You get the drift, if these are the kind of things youre interested in I suggest you definitely check these out.  You will not be disappointed, the links to the rest of the series are listed below and if you can think of someone else you think we should interview let us know in the comments or message me in our forums or on twitter.
