IR (Infrared) Sensor Mod your PS3

Submitted by greg; August 29, 2011

Here comes a solid hardware hack/mod from chi3f over at ps3hax... Coupled with pics is a tutorial detailing how you too can add an IR sensor to your PS3. Yes this mod requires soldering; however, it isn't nearly as complicated as soldering a ProgSkeet. Take a glance at the pics below ... you'll see what I mean. The most difficult part will likely be disassembling your console ... and to do that follow the tutorials here (Fat) or here (Slim). This IR/ Infrared Sensor mod requires the following:
  • AUVIO™ Universal Remote Receiver for Playstation®3 ($3 on Radio Shack website)
  • Soldering Iron and Solder
  • Flux (Optional but preferred)
  • Some Wire
  • Hot Glue Gun
  • Drill (I used a 5/32? drill bit)
  • Universal Remote (Preferably a Harmony)
Now for the tutorial itself ... click here and follow along.

You know you could just buy a usb ir sensor and program it to a harmony remote. This seems kind of pointless unless it can turn on your PS3.

I am sorry, I am one of the many noobs around here. 1 question. What can you do with this 'IR sensor'?

You can use a Bluray/DVD remote control that is based on on IR (infra red) on the PS3.

uh? its called the
Sony PlayStation 3 Blu-ray Disc Remote. buy it and it works, no opening your console, AND it turns the console on.

So there isn't much point in this other than to say that you have hardmodded a IR in your PS3?

But then you'd have another remote on the coffee table.  What's the point when you already own a logitech harmony.

This way you don't occupy 1 of your USB ports obviously and no wired dongle cluttering your PS3 area

you can use official Sony tv remotes to control your ps3 anyway just enable the BD remote control function in settings

yea kinda pointless the money youd pay to buy a IR diode then solder plus risk of messing up.

be far simpler really to just get a Blutooth device or i dont know if a IR USB would work??

It's detestable how many people complain of a project being "pointless". Every contribution has a point, it's not apparent or useful to you. The cool factor is also way up when you can use any universal remote to control your Ps3.

Sure, spend $40 dollars on an adapter from logitech. Or 20 dollar or whatever for a bluetooth remote, and look at that, another remote next to the cable remote, tv remote(because of course not all the functions, such as sleep, work on your cable remote), and audio/video receiver all on the coffee table, and wait for it... one of thems missing.

BTW: Way too much effort? Yeah that just means you have no skills. This is as easy as it gets. If there was a hack involving any soldering, and you couldn't do this... You would def f* up your ps3 trying to pirate games.

the only reason this progect is on the first news is that the want to promote stuff that is useless. They want us to think that this stuff is cool!!! Do they think we are  sooo  stupid?

BTW There was the same maddness about the 3.41OFW hack on ps3 when the dongles arrived at the market.. 1 month later after they sold all of their stock of usless chips they desited to release a cfw and nobody is sad becuse the bought somethink uselessto them... Everything is depended on the profit!!!

Dont beleve that Geohot woke up on morning and found the "secret" key to unlock ps3... That is a b/sh1t .. Because sony wanted to sell more consoles on the market , gave to "poor" geohot the key so everybody can now play pirate games. And dont beleve the bsh1t that sony says about money lost from salling game titles.. THEY HAD MUCH MORE PROFIT FROM SELLING MILLIONS OF NEW CONSOLES!!!

I get an instant hard on when I see these types of projects!

It's not always about the software, CFW and pirated games you damn needy people you.
I'm already happy with a hacked PS3 on 3.55 and an extra for that online play when I'm bored.

lrn2invest plox and stop complaining lol that's the leading reason why developers don't want to share their work with us anymore because you say CFW in possibly every blog comment system.

If only Google had a word count system for that.

That's a negative on the GeoHot situation.

He got sued, Sony isn't stupid enough to allow it's reputation to get even more jacked up just by what you're assuming as a "Fake" law suit case. They wanted to protect their investments, I'd be mad too if a system that I invested millions into was reduced to a pirated shrink. Though GeoHot isn't to blame for the Lv2 patching process, he just wanted to simply prove that Custom Firmware and self signed packages were possible to install on the PS3 and that anything can be hacked if deemed "Unhackable" but a cocky corporation.Shit happens, deal with it.

Very neat that this was accomplished, but opening the ps3 just to install an IR sensor is a little "going out of the way"..(if you know what I mean). I would rather just pay $20 for a PS3 blu-ray remote and avoid damaging my playstation. Don't get me wrong though, I still find it cool that someone is going beyond software in modding the ps3.

IR or infra red is a type of light not visible to the human eye
most (not all remote controls control your TV with it)
the light emmited by the remote is picked up by the sensor to establish the conection and ultimately control the TV or other device
the ps2 had IR sensors (i know the slim had them and possible some of the fat ones as well)

yeah this is a little risky but your not removing anything off the PS3 at all, just adding (or coupling)
this is using an IR USB reciever
only internally

not necessary
put a power button on your contoller using the reset button (its the little hole on the back
it which does nothing except turn off your controller
i
used a part of a toothpick (2-3/16 of an inch worth some tape and a
index card cut down, so the toothpick dosen't pop through the tape and
get lost)
toothpick goes in the hole cover with a little bit of index card and secure with tape
not the prettiest mod but it works

so turn on your system and press the power button you added

There's an option called "HDMI control" which lets your TV remote control your PS3. Ex: turning it on and off..... There's only one problem with this which is it will only turn it on with the remote and the PS3 will only turn off the TV with the controller. So it's kinda backwards unless my PS3 is messed up. Still. My remote does all the controls my PS3 controller does except in games along with turning my PS3 on so. Why?......
