W.I.P. AsbestOS - A Linux Bootloader for PS3 Firmware 3.41

Developer marcan42 has been hacking away at a custom bootloader -- cleverly named AsbestOS -- for booting & loading Linux on PS3 firmware 3.41 (it works on a Slim too). Tweeted are a few updates concerning AsbestOS' current status:

Wasted like an hour debugging a bootwrapper that was working perfectly, except noone documents this stuff. dtbImage.ps3 != zImage.ps3

As you can see it's coming along... The only caveat: The device in which you're using to hack your PS3 -- that device needs at least 64K of programmable flash memory. Those Teensy++ 2.0 boards we gave away pack 128K -- so you're all good. AVR development boards with 32K (or less), if you know what you're doing, you can solder a larger EERPOM/Flash chip and use that. Anyone using devices like iPhone or iPod, TI-84+, Dingoo, or whatever -- you're all right -- all systems go. People who've purchased PS JailBreak or similar clones -- you're likely shit out of luck -- sorry. We'll keep you posted. Follow marcan42 for more timely updates.

Yes its confirmed it workes with phones teense ++ ti -84 ipods (rockbox) iphone 3g, itouch iphone 2g , Nokia n900, palm pre and droids. It will work on most of the boards soldered together because the momory can be upgraded as far as the chips that were pre made with just the 1st release of the jb saying they could upgrade, sry guys hardware upgrades dont come with the package. :( plus sony will definalty track them down if they start sending replacements .....

Cant wait for CFW. I will be totally sweet to get away from Sony's lock-down OS. I which point I can stop turning on and off my PS power switch. More game compatibility no more FAT32 ect... Thank you to all you dev's. I'll use the zpack for now, but when this hits I will use my droid.

If you are jonesing to get online, and have the cash - I'd strongly suggest what everyone else is doing. Go get a 2nd PS3 - Upgrade that one, get online, etc.
BUT, by all means, keep the 3.41 machine for other fun stuff. Now that STONY is in the know, I am sure they will spare no expense to find and repair any and all possible hax from this point forward. If you do the math, $299 for a new machine is STILL - as a long term investment - a good thing. Just a thought!!

Idk AFAIK i'm not sure if they took out the bootloading sequence in 3.42 but that's what everyone said when we all updated past 3.15 a while ago. as far as i know just use the bypass hack to play online if you can, it won't help you to hack your console to upgrade higher. i'm sure eventually we'll dump the flash and begin CFW so when that happens, there might be some sort of 'manual' method of reflashing. but certainly at 3.50 all nonps3 hardware is disabled, so i doubt that will ever be hackable.

When sony took linux away they'd bitten off more than they could chew. Linux was *designed* by the hackers who *loved* that sony let them use it on their console. Sorry, but future firmwares will not be hacked with the current exploit. The chances of a custom firmware coming along one day and allowing users to get online may come one day, however your best bet is to purchase another console. The problem is that Sony will likely be able to detect custom firmware during online use.
