WIP: 3.55 HV CFW with Dual Bootable Linux Option

Expect a new custom firmware -- no, not 3.60 -- but 3.55, which graf is said to be working on. And it's also said this CFW will feature a new dual-boot option, letting you boot either GameOS or Linux ... or another OS, like FreeBSD for example. While this is only 3.55 for the moment, graf mentions the same is possible with 3.60 by simply patching the different offsets -- the code is the same, the offsets have changed. Perhaps 3.60 HV CFW will follow after the 3.55 release. 'Till then, good lookin' graf! - source: ps3crunch

It is much as highly anticipated than since i first purchased my ps3 with that feature, but better now, since it will have features that $ony could have given us from the beginning.

He puts out quality work especially when you see a lot of backup manager updates - don't get me wrong they're good and all, but I don't want to play backed up PS3 games I am more interested in the expansion of Linux to the Ps3. (because like my self and others understand the expandability it has towards a system like the Ps3)

a lot of your friends probably ran the 3.60 version spoof. 3.60 isn't out yet and may never come out simply because there are not enough new features in 3.60 to justify a release. We may not see a future release until 3.70 or something like that.

Why show sony your hand on such a minor release. I say wait and show em your hand later when they have more work to fix it. Also it would allow people who are already on 3.60 who may have heard about the jailbreak too late a chance not to upgrade and jailbreak their system with a better version.

But if your friends have a working 3.60 then they are either very good hackers or are pulling your leg by patching their 3.55 with a version spoof we all probably have install. I know mine says 3.60 but is in fact 3.55.

I still find it funny alot of folk are like fuck ps3 blah blah...why the fuck have you got one than...bit 2 faced and linux on a ps2 comw on you can buy a desktop or laptop for under 50 quid and throw linux on it.....thruth is its not hacking any more its pirating getting free games there is very little homebrew games out...Im all for homebrew because alot of the big blockbusters games started of as homebrew/shareware.

A real modem will just work in Linux as well. A "Winmodem" or soft-modem is missing hardware. This missing hardware is replaced with software emulating the missing functions. This lack of support is not the fault of Linux. The manufacture deliberately crippled the hardware to save a dollar or two.

For the record though I have two 56K modems which work just fine under linux. One is an external modem, the other is an internal modem.

I couldnt give a damn that SONY took away "other OS".. Before i got my PS3 i was all hyped about it and when i did try it. Jeez what aload of crap!
I browsed the net and was like wtf, Sooooo Slowwwww.. tried watching some movies and it ran like shit! why the hell would i want to do anything on Linux apart from maybe the old skool emulators, Which most run using CFW
I remember reading way back on the net some guy was upset because of the removal of "Other OS" saying that he did use his PS3 for office work because *I forget what else he said*

Ok my plans to begin with were also to maybe try play backup ps3 games using linux but because my firmware was way ahead i could not do such stuff untill CFW 3.55 came out and i definatly gave it a shot jailbreaking my PS3.. I definatly didnt do it for the purpose of backups. My main reason i jailbroke my PS3 was just to get the emulators to play on.. Not once did i try to use any backup loaders. Why do i need to? All games are multi region and are fair priced, ok mabe some people *like they say* they want to protect their games from damage.. blah blah blah ,but wouldnt your games be fine if you actually took care of them? Dont get me wrong, the excitement of playing games from HD is cool! but to me, i have no need to do this. Maybe im getting old..? To this day my PS3 is still on Original geohot CFW 3.55 and sadly can no longer play online.... Reason why i havent updated is because im hoping something amazing will come along from the hack scene which will make the ps3 kick ass.. Though ive been debating weher its worth and i should update my PS3 so i can play my games legitimately online..
O i miss kicking peoples ass on SSF4.. and Im missing out on MVC3 *sigh*

I totally respect and appreciate these hackers/programers for what they do to enhance our products. And perhaps if in the future when windows 7 can run on ps3 smoothly (ok impossible) then maybe i might want Other OS back.
Maybe sombody might create an external device which would boost ram etc in the ps3 ooh! wishful thinking.

I just though of something - If IBM was successful in clocking their Cell Processors to 5.0GHz back in 2005'/06' Who's to say we can't do the same in the PS3? Yes motherboards solve the issue of being able to overclock but it makes you wonder considering the PSP's were shipped at 300MHz and later overclocked for bigger games to 333MHz and so was the Ram in the Slim PSP's uncapped in 6.XX firmwares from 32MB usage to 64MB (Yes new models had more ram, but it wasn't used till later).

That being said, what if someone programmed something in linux since we have full access to hardware to increase the Voltage to the Cell CPU and increase the clock rate? This would benefit the PPE so the OS ran at higher clock rates than 3.2GHz, my other concern is if this was overclocked would the XDR Ram see an increase in read/write times?

Right now XDR @ 3.2GHz (256MB) runs at 25.6GB/s by increasing the Cell clock would we see faster Ram?

It's all speculation but when IBM first tested the Cell they were running the CPU's from 90nm-65nm to 4.7-5.0GHz+ Who's to say the newer fabbed CPU's in the Slim now 45nm aren't able to reach a steady 4-5GHz?

Even a 4GHz increase would be beneficial (That's already an 800MHz increase from the stock Clock rate @ 3.2).

I don't know much about the Cell and XDR being paired together but if the Cell ran higher I wonder if that would change the Ram clock rate more importantly the read/write times.
