Update: Or do this: through the Internet connection settings, set the primary DNS server to 67.202.81.137. I can confirm this also works -- PSN, store, downloads, online play -- all working, even without Logan5's tool. It's a magical IP; who knows how long it'll work for...
Update: I can personally confirm with the Logan5 [proxy] tool that you're able to bypass the 3.21 firmware update, leaving OtherOS and PSN (store/friends list access only) intact. I can't seem to play any online games though, or download game version updates, not with this method anyway. Anyone else?
Here's how:
- Download Logan5's tool.
- Run it;
- If it loads successfully, proceed to step 3.
- If it doesn't load, you may be missing some required Windows libraries. Google whatever you're missing; find it, download it, install it. In my case I was missing "mswinsck.ocx." You can find that here.
- Ensure "Firmware Update" remains unchecked.
- Click "Start Proxy" and take note of your IP.
- On your PS3, go to Settings -> Network Settings -> Internet Connection Settings.
- Select "Custom" and proceed through each screen, setting up your connection as normal, until you reach "Proxy Server."
- Select "Use."
- Enter the IP address and port as shown in Logan5's tool.
- Advance forward, save your connection and try it out. You should be able to sign in to PSN with no problems.
Get it straight from the XMB System Update: PS3 Firmware 3.21. If you're sportin a Slim, you may as well upgrade. No hacks for you. If you're not, and perhaps you have OtherOS reasons, then you may want to consider Geohot's advice: don't upgrade, not right away anyway, unless of course you need/want PSN access. We'll keep you posted.
This [3.21] update does one thing and one thing only: removes OtherOS.

Perhaps the old "Remove blu-ray game, insert another one" trick?
Or setting up a local DNS and redirecting the firmware check traffic?
I will choose to wait until Geohot comes out with his custom firmware... by then, my spring break should be over...

They are the biggest pieces of shit on Earth, to take back what they promised and offered. All that money people paid for this shit, and then to lose it all. SO, if someone finds way to exploit it through PS2 BwC, that means they will remove that feature too? I bet they would, if they are doing this shit move, what a shit move they made.
I don't want anything to do with the PS3 now. Should have known it was shit when AC6 came out for XB360 instead. The only reason I bought this crap was for the Ace Combat series, and look what happened there.
Anyone organizing a class-action suit, you can count me in!

IT IS TIME TO PUT ARE FOOT DOWN
Updates are to fix bugs and add features not take them away.
I plan to phone them email them and snail mail them.
I hope geohot can find a way for cfw or at least a work around to get on psn with out updating
would also be cool if he opened up the RSX hardware to Linux
I don't really be leave in iso loaders but Sony almost deserves it with this move
and you never know what could happen geohot may no way more then hes telling us and have it already working but I dout that's the case as the security is quite good on the ps3 but you never know.
I was really hoping it was a April fool's joke
guess I won't need to spend any money on God of war 3 until they put the feature back or it gets hacked.

No matter what piece of technology, EVERYONE debates about whether it can be hacked or not. This is sony's fault, 100%. They gave us the otheros option knowing well there are risks to it. They thought they were so high and mighty and wanted to prove that the ps3 was unhackable. Look now, Geohotz got into some simple rco editing, changed some text around. End result is that sony flips out and decides to just take it away. They are definitely crossing some serious moral lines. Sony has always been bad at handling console hacks, they try to take everything away from the user (at least I still have the option to buy apps on my iPod). Now, since I can't log into PSN, I can't update my games, download new games, and I won't be able to buy later-released games and support developers.
Fuck you Sony.

Where is the update stored/installed on the PS3?
HDD ore ROM?
If it is on the HDD, why not use 2 different HDDs.
One with the capability of OtherOS and one with the regular Sony OS.
Will this work?

I'm not even a hacker, just really pissed off at Sony. And it's not a matter of using the Install Other OS, its the friggin principle. My PS3, my decision... NO-ONE elses! So suck it Sony! Any other tautologies anyone!?
Best payback, don't buy. Let Sony see how they cope when the money flow stops... maybe then the'll listen. Who has the steel to stand their ground... or are you all soft tennis balls?! lol.

or maybe ... that's just my opinion, anyway ...
the only reason why anyone would need a hacked ps3 is if you can't afford to buy the games, but in that case, why do you own a ps3 in the first place?

It just goes to show how many whiny people are out there. If you dont like the update, then dont do it. Simple. Stop complaining really. You all are starting to sound like 360 fanbois sucking their mommas tit and complaining about the littlest thing.
And as for "our right to have the other OS", fuck off...Just be happy your system hasnt died on you or anything else really. IF you ppl want to hack(im not against it at all) then go find some obscure JAPANESE system, hack THAT and then gloat about stuff. but really, dont complain about "rights" when your "rights" are givin up as soon as your born int this world. posers.
Its aconsole, play games that are BOUGHT, dont try to copy shit. Its ironic that ppl wonder why a company looses money, its because you PIRATE stuff. Its one reason this economy is doing horrible. If you want to play something, go play it at a friends or rent it but DON'T complain when sony makes an update to further the security of a great system.
So stop whining, and just take it. if you dont update theres a way around it. Use THAT and shut up. For the slim users just update it. Most have both systems anyway and they can save their phat from the update and not worry anyway.

anyways why is some people being so worried about the new firmware 3.21 anyways if you like your '' OtherOs Feature '' then Dont Upgrade ya firmware even though u wont be able to sign into the psn network simple as that , if some of us gamers dont like '' Other Os '' then update the system firmware , i even updated my console today and tbh i dont use Other os that much.
and speaking of Firmware 3.21 theres a hidden feature behind it in the update which makes the psn purchased ps1 games in better quality and also in the update the MP4 format got improved. which is cool.

Geohat's dumb-ass proof of concept exploit is the reason we no longer have Other OS feature. Before that, we had OtherOS and PSN network access and everything, best of both worlds. There was no rumors or rumblings of the feature getting removed before that, now look. I have a 60GB launch Model and would have considered using the feature since I'm in the I.T. industry; would of liked a linux system to go along with my Laptop/Desktop. Unfortunately due to space limitations I didn't get to try it out, PSN network access and playing games takes priority over Other OS as I didn't buy the console with that feature as a major selling point. I bought the system for it's backwards compatibility which I do use, and for playing PS3 games obviously. I watch occasional DVD's and Blu-rays, listen to music and watch videos, was it nice to have the Other OS option on the table, there to be utilized if the need or want arose? Yes, yes it was; but alas it's now either one or the other. Yeah Sony gave the system openness by allowing you to install linux out of the box on it, and then what do you do with it? You still try and break the system, so who's to blame? For some even thou the system was slow due to the hypervisor still running in the background, having linux on the box without needing to break all the security to install it like on the Xbox360 was apparently still not enough to satisfy. The Xbox360 and Wii didn't even offer you that option, should of been happy to have had it out of the box. The open-source people always complain about openness and always claim they want to run Linux and develop and run their own code on a machine, hence why they feel the need to hack it open and break all the security. Here a machine that allowed a full linux install, a gift if you will from Sony; well happy trails to that as it's something that probably won't be featured in another game console for a long time to come if ever again.
For the Other OS users, it's unfortunate that if you also use the system for playing games it's a catch22. Blame Geo-hat.
It's either update and lose the Other OS system or buy another system and never update to 3.21 or higher. Yeah Geo-hat made a bunch of edits to the RCO and made text on screen say "Welcome Geo-hat", proclaimed he could access the root key and made other predictions; and here's the end result. Great work from someone who says he's never played a game on the PS3, found it more interesting to mess around with the system instead. Great job rocking the boat Hat.
The TRUTH of the matter is that all the bickering for custom firmware, piracy and openness like on the PSP is what's led Sony to remove the feature. Basically the majority of people want to play games for free via PIRACY like they might do so on the PSP, Wii and the Xbox360. Yes it's a recession and even before the recession everyone wanted to get GAMES for free, but it's not like Sony's just going to stand there and take it up the rear like they did on the PSP, or how Microsoft and Nintendo did with their systems before they started taking action.
Reply
but the thing is it can't remove the option to boot in other os if it is already installed it just can't! it's not right!
did anyone install other os and update?? i wonder if you still have access to it? because if you do, everyone should install it then update... if it just removes the option to INSTALL other os we should all do it now before it's too late! and then when geocock finally does something good with his exploit (in 3 years) we'll have a 10gb other os partition ready for the cfw mod or whatever!!
NO??? who tried that already?? anyone?

I will try the update on one of my ps3 and ill tell you LOL guy.
I kinda of agree with one of the above guy.
IF we didn't hack so much, sony wouldnt lose bad profit that they have to make such move. I seen some hispanic people by my house that post on craiglsitst like severals post on hacking psp/360/wii and making profit. This is something that could causes the company to get ticked off.
Personally, I like to buy game and make the copy...at least buy it at some point.
anyhow, I would liek to see the ps3 hacked
also, i would like to see more people support buying games
why else would the company make console if they don't make profit.

how are they assholes for protecting their system from hackers trying to rip them off?? they made a product..we bought it. we pay to buy games so they can make more games to entertain us. if we dont pay then we're stealing. thyre not a charity, they have every right to protect their product. if that means losing somethin noone uses then so be it. ill be updating to 3.21 when i finished writing this and ill promptly forget about the useless otheros option. if you use the otheros option then you have my sympathys. but sony have every right to protect themselves.

Instead of finding a way around 3.21, find a hack for PS3 that works without using the other OS feature. That will really teach them a lesson, and will probably make them restore other OS since there's no reason to block it anymore.

As for Sony being high and mighty giving its early Fat adopters Linux support out of the box albeit a crippled format; yeah that was mean of them to offer it up front; something Microsoft and Nintendo didn’t with their respective consoles motivating open-source people go and break the security for said purposes. Yeah that was a lousy move on Sony’s part - they should have just not offered it at all since it wasn’t enough to appease the open-source community that wanted a fully open system, regardless of how many times it’s been shown that opening up devices just leads to Piracy. They tried to give the open-source community what it wants, a machine that can run x-y-z Linux distro’s without having to break all the security to do so, but it’s apparent now that the test has failed. Happy trails to Linux support, welcome back to the old method of breaking it all down. So much for that, and the victims who might of used it legitimately and played games? Yeah so much for them, thanks to Geo-hot’s brilliant proof of concept and bold statements of making PS2 emulators, emulators and getting Root Keys and other boasts, look at the end result. I doubt Sony’s concern was that he edited a bunch of rco files to make it display “Welcome Geohot” on the main menu. How is this Sony’s fault? DemonD ? Are they suppose to just sit back and get screwed over by piracy like on the PSP, or not take action until there’s piracy like on the Wii or Xbox360? Yes it’s clearly Sony’s fault in your world, thou in reality it’s more Geo-hat’s fault regardless of how much you want to not believe so. Really Sony tried to take everything away from the user? Well Gee before Geo-hot released his proof-of-concept we had perfect harmony, Other OS and PSN access and games, no need for firmware by-passing needed. No mention or rumors of Other OS getting pulled; was the Other OS Linux perfect? No not by many estimations but it worked good enough in allowing people such as some of the other posters on this site to at least use it as a computer to write reports and documents on it, if they had no other stand-alone computer. But like I said again, apparently for some that wasn’t enough. Had to go and rock the boat and open a can of worms, great job Geo-hat. Hmm now he says he’s going to start reverse-engineering the update to find a way to keep Other OS and still update, well that’s great, good luck getting the hardware to run that code on a vanilla box that’s not running in his exploit mode.

Basically, this will allow you to use the PSN and play your games online while still having an older PS3 firmware version installed, such as 3.15.
If, eventually, a disc game comes out that requires 3.21, you will be forced to upgrade to play that game; there's nothing you can do about that yet. But in the meantime...
You can go to customize your network settings from XMB, and get to the part about DNS nameservers. Select custom, and enter the following IP as your Primary DNS:
67.202.81.137
And there you go, PSN works.
So Basically All You Have To Do Is Make 67.202.81.137 your primary DNS and your ps3 will be able to connect to psn without any updates

You are retarded. Do you realize an iso is a pirated game?
Also, they don't lose any money. On average it takes about 7 million dollars to make a game, $.10 to make a disc, they sell the games for $50.90 more than it takes to reproduce the games, they can easily make over 7 million in a week...
And don't act like they are going out of business.. They make billions on their products.

You just need to understand how everything works still, and what ONE ps3 with cfw can do to the ENTIRE psn, that is if the person really wanted to do some damage.
The main argument since this exploit came out was to use it for good or bad. Basically.

The other option would be to get DualShock 3 drivers for your PC, and connecting your computer to your TV. You mentioned your 'big screen' so I'm guessing you have an HDTV. Buy a cheap graphics card with HDMI out, and you're set. Connect the PC to your TV, start up an emulator, and map the buttons to your PS3 controller. And I guarantee you, it will probably run better than on the PS3. Definitely better than PS3/Linux. Probably just as good/probably better than PS3/homebrew.

i was hoping too for an April fool's joke! *sniff* ...
those who know me (well kindof) must also know that i'm against piracy (what am-i doing here then) because this site isn't against piracy but hacking LOL.
this update caused me a lot of trouble (backup-format-restore-update: nearly half a day in it)
yes i tried that 'magic IP' but as i only reserved the 10 Gb space & not using Linux, said to myself don't care for i'll be buying too many new games to cause myself some more troubles.
I'm really mad about this, but understand it. SONY made such MOVE (LOL) to prevent non-techy users having phat console to update & therefore the very few who wouldn't like the power users here won't be a big problem to control piracy when the PS3 is cracked.
So i accept this but hope they do update some day to support big hard-disk, other file system or direct format on the PS3 for backup purposes & also if they would give us back some linux support like possibility to run Live Distros & if they game Hypervisor access in the first place, there would be no need for someone to try crack the system. The lamda user wouldn't be an issue.
OK, i guess all runours about SONY aren't rumours in the end.
Noiw let me go back finish my 15th jobs on PS Life & shut down my new 'slim' PS3 in 'phat' skin (yet with BC, but for how long!?) ...

There ya go... it's all software... the only questionable aspect is PS2 on a PS3 SLIM... because it's supposed to be missing key components... And to think... the PS3 just went from the most secure system to quite possibly the most vulnerable...
