First off, I want to apologize to all the people who use Linux on their PS3. Before releasing, I weighed the pros and cons, and considered the possibility of an impact on OtherOS support. My logic was this. OtherOS support had already been removed from the Slim(not for technical reasons; I believe it only existed in the first place to promote the Cell for IBM) The builders had apparently no intention of including it in future products. So for the purposes of openness why not release? Not like anything else has(or probably will be) done on the PS3.And also: Don't update to 3.21...
A note to people interested in the exploit and retaining OtherOS support, DO NOT UPDATE. When 3.21 comes out, I will look into a safe way of updating to retain OtherOS support, perhaps something like Hellcat's Recovery Flasher. I never intended to touch CFW, but if that's how you want to play...
PS3 Firmware 3.21 will be available this Thursday. It will disable the Install Other OS feature that was available on the PS3 systems prior to the current slimmer models, launched in September 2009. This feature enabled users to install an operating system, but due to security concerns, were now removing this feature.Oh man! That sucks. And if you don't upgrade you'll lose the ability to:

on the other hand this could just be a temporary thing, i mean after all it wouldnt be the first time sony has removed a feature from its systems with a firmware update only to re-implement it at a later date.

It's bad enough that 3D acceleration were limited, now removing the entire feature :(
I am hoping it is nothing more than an april fools joke at this stage.
My friend uses the other os feature to use the ps3 as his computer as he doesn't have one.

is the OtherOS gonna be exclusive for research and/or military purpose? cuz this would totally sucks. it a shame they haven't decided to dump it or not.

Since geohot already made a hello world, do you believe this can eventually lead to CFW? Like, givin time and effort--hard work ? Because I don't want to update my ps3 at all anymore since this exploit was discoverd, and if a cfw is made we would probably install it in the ps3 recovery menu right?
I'm not the type of person looking to pirate ps3 games, just ps2 games since I have a 40gb non backwards compatible system. I'm just looking forward to system tweaks such as in game music, and REAL themes. Do you think this exploit will lead to that givin the right amount of time and study?

I bought the ps3 they day it came out,fat and with other os,i do not think it is legal to take away other os.
If its not legal i will sue!!!
Is any 1 here good with the law about sutch thinks here?
I dont think its right to first sell the ps3 with other os then later remove it,and the ps3 is still not hacked for isos yet so whats the problem?
I was hoping someday to use the ps3s full power in linux and use my ps3 as a great second pc.
Now Sony is removing other os because they are scared of iso loaders, well fuck them.......
Many of us dont even care about iso loaders!!!!!!!
We just want to use the device we bought at its max and with no restrictions(af ter all we paid for it so why cant we choose how to use it?)

I've taken my PS3 off the network & won't be updating - I bought the thing in large part for that feature. For goodness' sake Sony - the PS3 has been one screwup after another. Marketing was appalling, leading to low console sales. The game supply is weak compared to your competitors because you don't have enough well trained developers for a very different system. Left to itself, that would've improved. With this you'll kill the hobby / student / scientific coder base and reduce developer availability further. No point guarding against copyright infringement when there's nothing to protect.

XLink Kai: Evolution VII is our ground-breaking software which made us popular amongst thousands of XBox, Playstation 2, Gamecube and PSP owners, allowing them to play online the way online games were meant to be - free. It's probably the reason you came here, and hopefully one of the reasons you stay here.

The PS3 hardware you buy is YOURS not Sony's. You own it. And Sony advertised certain product features in their advertising before you purchased it. Not delivering those features is fraud. Sony will certainly try to hide behind their EULA on the new firmware, and claim that you agreed to lose the feature in exchange for use of their firmware. A central problem with that claim is not agreeing would render the system essentially unusable, ie. you could no longer employ the system for its intended purpose, playing games and movies, which would effectively be retroactive fraud. Basically, Sony can not legally sell an item with one implied contract [advertising+EU LA], and then later alter the contract in their favor. That is fraud by definition. Even if they get out of this claim, it is at least a case of coercion under duress, specifically Sony is coercing its previous customers, who now OWN [as opposed to lease or other nonsense] PS3 hardware, to agree to deactivate features (requisite injury), which were advertised before purchase and included in the purchase price, in order to continue to make FULL[reduced] use of their PS3 (requisite threat). Only Sony benefits from this change, which is a further argument in a legal challenge.
coercion [definition]:
1. The intimidation of a victim to compel the individual to do some act against his or her will by the use of psychological pressure, physical force, or threats.
2. legal - the unlawful act of compelling a person to do, or to abstain from doing, something by depriving him of the exercise of his free will, particularly by use or threat of physical or moral force. In many states of the United States, statutes declare a person guilty of a misdemeanor if he, by violence or injury to another's person, family, or property, or by depriving him of his clothing or any tool or implement, or by intimidating him with threat,
3. legal - declaration of intent to injure another by doing an unlawful act, with a view to restraining his freedom of action, or to compel another party to perform some act that said party is not legally bound to perform.
duress [definition]:
1. legal - In the law of contracts, the use of unfair persuasion to procure an agreement, such a contract is void unless later ratified.

as to the removal of the otheros option, sony arent stupid. most likely in some very small print it says something like "all features are subject to change without notice at anytime" its probably buried in one of the EULAs or when you sign up for a PSNid.
personally i think it sucks theyre removing the otheros feature, but ive never used it. nor intend to. so i will get over the loss pretty quick. i know nooone who uses it and i doubt the majority of people who own a ps3 use it. there will be a big outcry online just to make a big fuss but i doutb 99% of the people complaining use it either..
Reply
they will have this sewn up tight and many armchair lawyers will misguidedly quote some law or other to show why sony cant take it away but end of the day if sony couldnt theres no way they would be removing it. a huge multinational corporation is going to know a lot more about fraud and sales agreements
than some guy sitting behind his pc using the internet.
ive still got my original 60gb ps3 box.. no where on it is there any mention of "other os"
also it clearly says "design and specifications are subject to change without notice"
it also says "the system software included is subject to a limited license from SCE refer to ps3 eula for details"
basically we're fcked lol

This had better be a joke took me week to get all emulators running good
I am not updating my ps3 till I no if this is really true it had better be a joke or Sony's going to be in some real hot water over this.
In fact I hope the ps3 gets hack wide open like the psp did that would teach them a lesson yep and first feature added would probably be a copy to hd menu on the game and movie disc.
I also bet Linux will also get full access to the ps3 gpu and ram witch would make Linux so much faster.
One note don't mess with the Linux community they will find a way to get it working again and in the process end up opening it to be fully hacked this is a stupid move Sony oh and they will probably get the slim ps3 working too.
And yellow dog Linux may also have legal recourse for removing Linux support unless they are owned by Sony.
This had Better be a joke this is not fair to the Linux community period.

Or even if it does disable the ability to SWITCH to OtherOS, now would be a better time than ever for someone to come up with a workaround to allow you to return to GameOS without setting it as default (which I've wanted to be able to do for years) - that way it probably won't be able to get rid of it.

About Linux on PS3, Sony advertised that feature before they even launched the console officially, whether it is on the box or not. They even recently publically claimed they would not be disabling this feature for existing users (slim PS3 lauch). In the US, it is required for product claims to be reasonably accurate, and a manufacturer cannot change product features after you buy an item. This is because they no longer own it, and they need permission to alter the product from the owner. EULAs probably won't let Sony win this case, but lack of legal challenge definitely will.

also for those arguing the just dont upgrade and stop bitching they advertised it as being a versatile platform able to do ALL the various features the system has. its not just whenever they feel like letting you use it. if they say it has other os and online play they cant make you chose between both features ALWAYS have to be there. well theres my rage lets hope for the best lol

Hacks to the psp helped the hardware sell, but it killed game sales and as a result killed developer interest in the console.
People are upset because they feel the Other OS feature would not be going away had people stayed away from trying to exploit it.
The calls for legal action are horse shit. You arent required to update. You can have your Other OS feature, but you forfeit the right to connect to a service sony provides. If its legal to require the current firmware to connect to the PSN then its legal to require 3.21 to connect to the psn.
Otherwise some retard with a blind hatred for 3d can sue sony for requiring the future update that adds 3d to the ps3.
So im here calling out the ps3 hack community. You were given linux and boundaries were set. You crossed the line and got your hand slapped. Wear it.
I hope you didnt curse Microsoft for banning your 360s. As you said you knew the chances.
Reply
The only way Sony could be sued over this is if they 'forcefully' removed it in an update, but they're not, you're agreeing to have it removed when you update to go on PSN, NOWHERE does it say that once you buy a PS3 you have the right to unlimited terms free use of PSN, Sony LETS you use PSN as long as you AGREE to the TOU!. Sony is not forcing anyone to update, simple as. You are the one that hits "I AGREE" at the end of the day.
If you want to keep other os simply don't update :)

If these people hadn't been fucking around with it, the feature would still be there. Simple as.

who thinks like me and says that geohot should have kept it secret and wait till it can boot cfw? or isos? then sony would have paid big bucks for their fail and the ps3 would have died because of poor software sales and... uuhh wait... nope. fine by me, did u realize that it's the best console out there (except in sales lol), that awesome games are coming out, and it's still not hacked... that will be a good point in the long run!
more cash for sony and publishers, means more great games down the tube. if you think that your other os is more important than games, step aside loser, i want to be right under the tube so good stuff falls on me and my ps3.
linux work way better on a real computer anyways no 3d graffx limitations, full ram, etc. and now cheaper...
still it's sad that legitimate use will be stopped.
ONE QUESTION THO...
what about the partition that was made for ubuntu or yellowdog, will it be attributed to the ps3 or will it be lost in there, forever blocked by sony???
Hmmm...

You know how many people have actually jailbroken their ipod. Not enough that I can go to any person on the train ask 20 of them to see their iPod and maybe only one out of those 20 have a jail broken one. Same thing with the PSP I have a hacked one but everyone I randomly meet usually doesn't.
I just needed the Linux side to use the Cell SDK but I still want to play my games online when I'm using my PS3 for games. Hackers now a days are doing things half assed you don't release an exploit to the public until you can do something with it that would allow CFW or ways to bypass stuff. You could of had a fully functional hack without Sony interfering and messing with what others do on the PS3 legitimately.
But now people are going to wait and hope that someone figures something out. You won't be playing new games for at least a year or two because you had to not update waiting for a hack. Then when it does get a hack you gonna get your PSN banned like your 360s. Who buys three and keeps doing the same thing over and over to them? I got burnt the first time I did this...I'll try it again....Ouch that burned again hmmmm maybe the third time I won't get burnt. Your so smart...

But taken directly from their PS3 EULA:
"You may not use, make, or distribute unauthorized software or hardware in conjunction with PSN, or take or use any data from PSN to design, develop or update unauthorized software or hardware, including but not limited to cheat code software or devices that circumvent any security features or limitations included on any software or devices."
"Except as otherwise provided on PSN, all transactions are made in the currency of your country of residence. Features, specifications, prices and content are subject to change or withdrawal at any time and SCEA does not provide any refunds in the event of a price drop, a subsequent promotional offering or content removal"
I am not a professional with contractual law but I think that is an agreement that implies relevance to OtherOS.

"I understand why you dislike CFW (I'm not going to lie and say piracy is not a problem, I'm a mod on PSP mod forum, and I can not tell you how many people ask about downloading games, despite the very clear rules posted everywhere), however homebrew coders are not all piracy advocates, there are a huge amount of apps that the PSP should have had, but Sony did not jump on (among them, universal IR remote for Fats, a faster web browser that uses ALL the ram of the PSP, a pdf/comic book viewer, and a youtube/flash video viewer application). Now none of those apps are malicious nor in any way piracy, to be honest I don't understand why Sony continues to ignore these apps as if they don't exist. Can you honestly tell me as a PSP owner you wouldn't want any of those apps (don't bring up the Official Sony comic book viewer, it only supports proprietary formats, and has a very limited library)? Open source pushes creators all the time, that's why the PSN has PS1 games for download (as well as digital versions of many PSP games), all of these were "borrowed" from CFW applications. Before you judge my choice to use CFW I own over 40 UMDs, and have had a fat PSP since its North American launch, I made the switch to CFW for more features so I would my PSP more, not for piracy. Anyway the PSP is breathing its last breaths, Sony's PSP GO is an example of their current business plan to remove features and charge more (no UMD drive, and a new memory card type requirement, just to push the sales of the new MSProDuoMini). I hate when companies require all proprietary accessories, simply put I don't know how long you had a PSP, but when they first came out memory sticks were extremely expensive, while they have gone down, for people like me with a huge amount of digital media the sizes are still too small, and expensive, for a 16gb MSProDuo I could get a SD card that's 2x the memory size. Just food for thought."

Exactly how important do you think Other Os is in making a console purchase decision? Probably not very important considering the ps3 has a browser, free online game service, built in wifi, bluray, easily replaceable HD, and bluetooth yet does not blow away the 360 that has none of those.
The only way this will hurt Sony is if you believe in slippery slope logic that now Sony has taken Other Os they will take other features. But if you are dumb enough to believe in that logic, Id rather you buy a 360.

Good luck. See ya.

The ps3 and the psp are not Open Source. You dont have the right to modify them just because it doesnt have some features you want. I agree that it would be nice if Sony would embrace the homebrew community more with an app store and an SDK. Maybe someday it will happen. But based on the troubles the homebrew/hacking community have had on the psp. I see no reason for Sony to play nice.
This guy wants to give the homebrew/hack community credit for Sony eventually putting ps1 games on the psn. But he fails to give credit to the homebrew/hack community for the PSP Go not having a removable battery due to the creation of the pandora battery.
And claiming the psp go has fewer features is a load of crap. It lost the UMD drive because everyone was critical of the UMD format and claimed they wanted to download their games. At the expense of the UMD drive the Go added a 16gb harddrive, bluetooth for internet, headphones, and controller tethering, and a save game feature that allows you to completely power down the psp to save battery. That doesnt sound like less features.
The mini duo is backwards compatible with ms duo. Its an advancement in the technology. You can use the mini on the regular PSPs with an adapter. Its similar in concept to bluray taking over from DVD.
Also, Sony is starting to allow SD cards to be used on their cameras. So they are opening up to other formats. Just food for thought.

First of all, Thank you Geohot for putting an unfathomable amount of your personal time into getting as far as you have. For those who didn't pay attention, Geo put in just under 4 years of HIS time attempting to find the exploit that he did (I believe the exact time he posted was 3 years, 11 months, and 20-some odd days?).
Secondly, let me just note that I don't endorse piracy for piracy's sake. If you can afford the games, buy them. Personally I've purchased many Wii games in my day despite my Wii being completely softmodded. I actually modded another guy's Wii, and right after he told me he was headed to Gamestop to purchase Mario Kart Wii. I asked why, and he said that Mario Games were collector's items to him, and were worth more unopened later on. He still has his copy unopened to this day, yet plays the game regularly off his USB Hard Drive.
As to the PS3, I personally hope that it becomes hacked. I would love to use the PS3 as a fully powered Secondary PC. I have many neat uses in mind for it once it becomes fully unlocked. Removing this OtherOS feature pretty much kills that. It essentially means I bought my PS3 just to play like 3 or 4 games (the rest could've easily been played on my 360, but I like to keep a balanced collection on all consoles).
Once you pay the price for the hardware, it's yours. Sony can't stop you from doing whatever the heck you want with it. If you wanna use the OtherOS feature it came with to hack, or to record music, or simply to convert and save DVD movies, you are completely allowed to do that.
However, that does not give you the right to use the PSN. Whereas you own your PS3, Sony still owns the PSN, which includes online gameplay, along with your account and your friends list. So, needless to say, it's not a matter of them coercing you to remove the OtherOS. It's just them saying "Systems that continue to use the OtherOS feature will no longer be compatible with our PSN service." It's just like when the servers went down for several PS2 games that were online enabled (Twisted Metal Black Online comes to mind). You got the game because you wanted to play it online. However, you were playing on the COMPANY'S servers. Once the company decided it didn't want to keep the server up anymore, they simply pulled the plug.
So yeah, while it sucks and does NOTHING for Consumer Relations, Sony has every right to do this.
Luckily I don't play games online that much with PS3. The only game this severely affects for me is MAG (which is easily substituted for by Modern Warfare 2 on the 360).
I'd still LIKE to use the full features, but can do without until Geohot or whomever else releases the first PS3 CFW.
So to all those trying to break through that final door, Godspeed!

I cant wait until this backfires on sony. I was thinking of buying the new final fantasy too, looks liek they lost otu on that sale. also i have a feeling, that once the door is wide open and the great tool are out and harware 100% unlocked, just as sony fears, the new ps4 and 5 wont hold water to the unlocked hardware of the ps3, which will hurt sales badly. Once it is, just imagine the embarassment sony will have if a smart coder manages to start emulation of ps4 from unlocked and hacked ps3.

I dont knwo my games are put up somewhere , cause i dont play them, i only use otheros, but just because it can hook to internet should not mean you have to have it for the ps3 to work with all titles. I dont think i read anywhere that the user MUST have high speed internet in order to play the latest games released. If im right, then sony is wrong and a judge would easily see it. but then again, now that it hink about it, i guess they could ship the said update with the actual disk, which is in their right, but is it really their right to refuse you to play the game because you didnt want to take an update that added abilities required for the game? Removing otheros is not a new technology that enabled new games to play properly, so it just seems that the EULA now by judges orders shoudl have to be signed before purchase. What if i buy ps3 and right out of box refuse any agreement? The contract shoudl be the actual sale. I dont recall seeing on the box that im going to have to accept anything in order to play new titles, so not accepting EULA and being rejected without warning thus in effect forcing an acceptance of the EULA shoudl be concidered illegal. I also didnt see otheros mentioned on the box, but it was there, so i effectively purchased it too. So how does sony still have the right to say "You accept New EULA, remove otheros which you paid for as part of the entire package, or loose ability to play all new games from here on out"
Also prolly not the same, but i buy Windows 7 , its not advertise that it comes with firefox, but i get it, then all of a sudden , Microsoft decides that Firefox is a huge threat to Internet explorer, and send out a new update, telling you that I have to remove Firefox or else I can not use TCP Services because that is where the exploit might come from in firefox. So i dont want to loose tcp services so i remove firefox and can never get it back, because after all, it is MS OS right? Or i keep firefox and can not get on the internet, which keeps us safe too. How fast do you think they woudl be sued and for how much? They could not get away with that and i knwo its not the same, but grey areas can go both ways, remember it is all abotu how the judge interprets the contract.
Im confident that this new hack activity will bring us all some new fun and all the emu that most of us want. And sony, lol, in the end we will be laughing at them. Just think to market the next new ps4 or whatever, they can not cut corners, it will have to be one badass system, to compete with a fully open not limited system. But thats assuming the would do otheros in it or similar and i think its safe to say no gonna happen. The guy who made the decision to add otheros in the first place is prolly one of the few too many now unemployed people. lol Corruption always falls?
