OtherOS to Make its Return

The dev who took claim to our open-source downgrading bounty, call him graf_chokolo, has made mention he's bringing OtherOS back -- back with the same access rights as GameOS, meaning, "access to Dispatcher Manager, Update Manager, VFLASH, HDD encryption/decryption, isolated SPUs and RSX of course." Full access under Linux may provide a better means of hacking Sony's beloved PS3 too. Follow the source and read on to see where graf's at, seems promising... - source: xorloser's blog

Finally wow.. Since the beginning of those hacks and stuff, it was always "only for OtherOS and homebrews", but I didn't see a single decent homebrew, besides Pong and Fractal, nor OtherOS back. It's always backups backups and backups. Don't get me wrong, I freaking enjoy just renting a game and having it forever, but I'd really like to see some of those pleasures we had on PSP, like CSPSP

The problem with the ps3 running Linux is that it only has 512mb ram and 256mb is for video processing. So thats only 256mb for the CPU, i'd imagine it would be slow? I guess we could use usb sticks as "Ready Boost"

You cannot run Windows on PS3, the CPU architectures are different. The best hope of running Windows on a PS3 would be to bribe M$ to produce a PowerPC version of Windows.......which is never gonna happen :):)

The otheros thing is great and all, but for what purpose?
Having linux on a ps3 isn't actually useful.
I mean it's like having an 80s video card on an 90s pc.
It can not access the gfx card that is built in to the ps3, which is nvida btw.
And most ppl already have a pc they can install a linux OS on, and that will work way better than it will do on the ps3. So again, for what purpose?

I care about Linux. This is awesome. And if it was a useless machine that would just run inux so slowly, why the hell would the air force have purchased thousands of these things to use as a super computer. The cell processor is a work of art, and not fully utilized at all. Linux would enable people to start using this to its full extent, especially with full HW access like this developer is advertising. Also, as a media player and internet browser (in my living room on my hd tv), linux would be so handy. I would rather not have to hook up my lap top every time or drag my desktop out of my bedroom.

You clearly don't know what you're talking about, do you? Why do you think the PS3 started to be "hacked" at first? To have access to all this awesome power OUR console that WE bought with OUR OWN MONEY has. The Cell BE processor is an amazing piece of technology clocked at 3.2ghz with 8 freaking cores. Maybe the RAM size is dissappointing, but the power it can deliver is simply beast. The PS3 is the most affordable of those powerful computers out there.

Don't ever say Linux on PS3 is useless.

most problems with backup support is with the syscalls used and disc mounting; but with the most recent builds of multiman and gaia manager those problems have been address in one form or another. if you do not know how to play a certain backup please refer to one or even both of those dev's websites.

i beg to differ. even with the rather quick advancements in cpu technologies, the most expensive and readily available supercomputer processor is only a quad core powerpc processor where as the ps3 has 8 SPEs. meaning 1 SPE locked out for manufacturing purposes, one dedicated to the gameos and 6 free SPEs for various game codes. imagine using that processor or a daisy chain of ps3s. that would be a great sight to see.

You guys are retarded. You can still play your back ups online from 3.55 cfw. Its already hacked just fine. 3.6 cfw is irrelevant right now although downgrading support would be nice. Linux on the ps3 is awesome, it's literally why I bought it in the first place. This site isn't about piracy it's about hacking and developing NEW things, on a piece of hardware that supports amazing things. Rulz you are a n00b, if I wanted linux on my pc I'd have a second pc, I want it on my ps3 so it's both. Not to mention with full hardware support that he is advertising, Linux will be even more powerful than before when it was an option, because it was still locked out at that point and yes that is worthless. This, however, will be awesome. If all you want are the devs to work on new jailbreaks maybe you should go to tech school and join them. It's not worth weeks of work on a project you're not getting paid for, to produce something that sony will immediately update. Especially when the CFW that is already out STILL WORKS ON PSN!!!!!! In summary, I want to be able to use new things on my hardware that I paid for, just like any other device (like my computer). Not use things I didn't pay for on my jailbroken pirate ps3. The amount of money in games I have right now as backups is like 5x what the ps3 itself is worth. If you want to play online and pirate, get 2 ps3's, and you'll still save hundreds on the single player backups.

mr. ferguson i understand you're more than likely a troll but i'll just say, with linux installed on the ps3 i wouldn't need to wait for a dev to make any homebrews, media centers, emulators as most of the ones i'm looking forward to using are already developed for a linux os. all i'd have to do was port them over. also, the various decrypting and encrypting that can be done with an 8 SPE processor at full capacity is something i'll be looking forward to the most.

OtherOS provides a few good examples to have it running again on the Ps3 - Linux Distrobutions are widely available and come in all different sizes and they run usually alternatives to your usuall Windows/Mac Software.

It's not to replace your PC but the fact you get this functionalty is awesome, you will be running more than just simple homebrew but rather a FULL OS.

As for the 256Mb of ram restrictions, unless someone wants to specifically write a Distrobution of linux to run lightweight there is other Distro's such as DSL (Damn small linux) which runs amazing on lower ram.

Even though the PS3 has 256Mb Linux runs well on hardware like this, it isn't a resource hog like you are thinking. This would actually run applications faster, and with the RSX enabled and the support for the GPU I'm sure things will get faster (Not to mention the unlocking of the SPE's on the CPU it self)

Im on 3.15 now and running linux. I love it. . . other than playing pc games and watching video online it does everything a ordinary pc does. you can download videos, play music, play games, web browse it has a lot of nice features. It takes some getting used to because installing programs is based on command line instead of click and install. This is great news keep up the hard work devs.

I do not know what you are using but puppy linux is running flash as good as windows on the same hardware, video better and its at least twice as fast on every thing else, running in RAM it would still fit comfortably in 256M, it runs at 110M now but 30M is other hardware drivers so around 80Mbyte for a PS3 Version. Someone is already talking about a port.

Nah thats not true. Window's 7 was made to run on older slower machines but you still need 512Mb of ram. I'm not sure how much the ps3 has... Im hoping that 3.55 is safe as the suspected rootkit only came in at 3.56 so all the people on 3.55 Custom firmwares maybe lucky.Im ready to be banned and not afraid of being banned and possibly the reason sony hasn't banned anyone to daye other than temp bans for misuse of playstation home, i got 30day ban ;( but theres been no current Console bans as yet becuase i think there networks free , microsoft is paid so they have to be violent in there reaction to remove console modders / hackers.. Sony seem to be taking it easy , but if we judge how they have reacted recently to everything maybe there going to ban consoles , my point is 3.55 probably cant be detected. Remember early jailbreakers have been playing online for months and months and im sure they would have acted on that swiftly. By the way ive played mass effect 2, kindly downloaded from filesonic and the game is stunning if you have not got that game make time to get it you wont be dissapointed. also using the emulator madnafen get teddyboy for (master system) rom. Where did you get that idea? The Xbox 360 can emulate the original Xbox just fine. I don't see any reason why the PS3 couldn't software emulate the PS2, or even the Gamecube / Wii. Porting Dolphin to the PS3 would just be a lot of work.

Comparing x-box emulation on 360 to ps2 emulation on ps3 is retarded... The x-box doesn't so much "emulate" as it simply patches the game and makes it run on more current hardware, that's because of how similar X-box and x-box 360 are... Much like you don't emulate a PC game from 5 years ago on a PC you made today because the hardware is fully backwards compatible.

The PS3 however, shares very little in common with the PS2... This is why early PS3 models had to actually contain PS2 hardware to run them (same way Super Gameboy was actually a gameboy shoved in a SNES cart... Originally it was the PS2 video and cpu, later just the video with the CPU being emulated...)

Now onto the subject of Gamecube... That truly depends on how similar (or dissimilar) the PS3 video renderer is compared to the gamecubes... If they are similar for some HLE (as Dolphin ((the emu)) does for PC) then there is no reason why the PS3's CPU couldn't handle emulation of the Wii/GCN main processor... the difficulty comes from the video portion, if that has to be emulated in software you can forget it.

Err... The PS3 only has 1 processor. I think you're confusing the fact that the PS3 also has 7 (8 physical, 1 disabled) SPEs... which are NOT full CPU cores and can NEVER be used as such.

They have mode in common with GPU shaders, and indeed they are partially used to help handle vertex data used for 3d objects.

Other than slim users I dont see the need. Considering theres already a way to play ps2 backups via usb flash trick Im just wondering if the backup managers can play ps2 games also. Im not sure what the hardware differences are between the software emulation 80 gig units and slims are but in time there should be a fix to boot ps2 games.

It's not in Sony's best interest to create a fully working PS2 emulator because one, you can never have a fully compatible and fully functional working emulator. It's not gonna happen. However, creating a working PS2 emulator on a PS3 which is nearly 15 times stronger than a PS2 (a system only needs to be seven times stronger to emulate the system it wants to emulate) and that's more than enough. So you telling me because it can run Linux, something whose kernel can be modified and has a working PS2 emulator on it cannot run it's PS2 emulator on it because it's on a PS3 is absolute shit.

do you have any idea how emulation works? to emulate ps2 on ps3 they used both methods, hardware and software depending on the model. the one's that used ps2 hardware worked near perfectly but cost too much to put in and software just wasn't doing justice because the ps3's hardware is too DIFFERENT that when emulating, a lot can go wrong. just because it's stronger doesn't mean it can emulate anything. Take a look at dreamcast or saturn emulators, it took a while to make even decent ones of those because the architecture is just too askew to computers.

I have a 80G PS3 2.53 FW which needs to be upgraded to 3.55 to play GT5, newer BR movies and use the Move bundle. Now when I bought this unit, I bought it primarily for the BR as a dedicated BR at the time was 2-300 more then the PS3. The other reason was the ability to use it as a computer thru the OtherOs function. In my search to "have my cake and eat it too" I came across a Company whose claim is that they can install Linux on any PS3 firmware and originally this was sanctioned by Sony. www.linuxforps3installer.com/ From their FAQ

Q: Can i update my PS3 with LinuxforPS3installer installed?
A: Yes you can, Sony updates will not affect this product.

Also states that it "works with the new system firmware updates", but not the revision date.....

Any thoughts on this or anyone tried this yet?
