Linux Makes its Return to 3.41 and its Better Than Ever!

Linux is officially back -- on firmware 3.41! But nothing is public yet. It's mentioned graf_chokolo will release everything after it is thoroughly tested, you know, to avoid bricks and all that. Below are two screenshots and a direct quote from the graf man:

It has all GameOS features, it has access to all HDD, VFLASH and FLASH regions. It can communicate with Dispatcher Manager, Update Manager, SYSCON Manager, it can run isolated SPUs, and of course RSX. I uploaded some screenshots of the Debian distribution i installed on my PS3 HDD. The Debian distribution is a just normal PPC64 Linux without any modification, all i changed was my dutifully and beloved Hypervisor. I modified the Hypervisor so far that it boots the Linux bootloader petitiboot from VFLASH and petitboot loads the Linux distribution installed on a HDD region. And what is better than Linux to boot Linux? I practically implemented Dual Boot feature GameOS+OtherOS in the Hypervisor Linux is not the only OS which can be booted like this from PS3 HDD.

Are you guys serious? Why do you want to run Linux on a PS3 other then for hacking? I installed it before when I could via the OtherOS and it is slow as hell. The system only has 256MB RAM, which is useless for most window managers like KDE or GNOME. I suppose ICE works but its ugly. So unless you know the commandline, it is pretty pointless. I am a Linux sys admin, so I know what you can and cannot do with Linux on the PS3. It is a piss poor desktop PC. I run real Linux (Fedora 13) on all my systems. Windows sucks and so does OSX. I am a 100% Linux person for the past 14 years but Linux on PS3 is useless. The I/O is slow as hell. Takes forever to boot.

i know that it hasnt been made for 3.55 or 3.56. but when 3.56 does eventually get hacked, will it be possible to install otheros on 3.56 when its hacked. or is the code for 3.41 only?

for the people wondering if it works on 3.55 that is a NO... because on the 3.55 update they take out the option to boot a different OS therefore you need 3.41 sooo if you have 3.55 just downgrade DUHHHH, and use the DNS thingy to go online OK and ya go to go HOE

You're an idiot starscream... WINE is not PPC compatible, likewise you can't install Windows XP on a PPC system. This isn't magic.

WINE is not an emulator, it's a compatibility layer between systems that are on non-windows systems based on the intel x86 architecture... PPC is not x86... it's a completely different set of hardware...

Just because both systems can run linux, doesn't mean all software works on both... Think of it like the X-box and Playstation... some companies can release the same game on both systems, but that doesn't mean if you put the x-box version in the playstation it will work.

i remember finding a win NT4 that was ppc-based.
appearantly they never released it to the broad public, but i belive they were researching ppc as server platform.

so in theory, you COULD run windows on a ps3, but why would you want to do that?

Well... ya that was true but cuz the ppl who made other OS for ps3 limited it. Graf's version is gonna give full function over the ps3 so it should run faster. If we can set it up right. He's replaceing sony's HV and made he's own.

For those of you who are saying this is slow - This version has everything Unlocked even GameOS functions in Linux.

So if that is right you could launch a PS3 game within Linux soon enough (of course this matters on the devs)

The RSX and SPU's are apparently being controlled within linux, which is fucking amazing that's full 100% Hardware support, if they create a Linux around THIS cell then the Ps3 should boot linux amazingly fast, even though he ran an unmodified version of the PPC Distro a Full ported Distrobution of the Ps3 should be beastly with in-game functions

Claiming to want Linux on the PS3 is like claiming to love God.

Ulterior motives... You just say that because it makes you feel good about yourself.

No real programmers care about this. It's all about fame and the limelight. (Watch fail0verfl0ws presentation...)

No real users care about this either. Running unsigned code on the PS3 is pointless, it's all about piracy and it always has been about piracy.

People get mad about this because it's TRUE.

That being said, it's still sad to see Sony trying to fuck individuals over by exploiting the American legal system (Well, maybe the American legal system is the way it is because of big company motives to exploit but that's besides the point).

1) YDL had a custom experimental build that utilized the full hardware potential. There's a YouTube video floating around.

2) XMBC on PS3 would rock.

3) Buy a Kinect. It's a usb interface.

5) $$$ Profit??! Someone's already created the best HTPC experience yet, as a plugin has been made for XMBC compatibility.

Imagine your PS3 as your central hub, Netflix, XMBC, and games. And a kickass - look babe no hands gestures - for controlling XMBC. Imagine Kinect for PS3!!!!!

All you bitches talking and asking about running Windows or Mac stfu. Linux is just as good. It can do nearly everything. Leave the emulators to the actually ps3 itself (like homebrew apps).

Linux is terrific for programming and not to mention free which is what I thought everyones goal was.

Just imagine programming software with linux and running it all from 1 machine. That is what real hackers/programmers and users are waiting for.

Everyone talking about can we do this or it would be cool if we could run this, should just wait for more noob friendly instuctions as this will not be as important to them.

look relys you might have a limited view focused on piracy, I want OtherOS because Paid for a console that offered that functionality, in fact I have a PS3 dedicated to Linux, and this is the thing that will surprise the heck out of you... I don't pirate anything!

I'm a geek that loves Linux, and expect to keep what I paid for, Sony removed that feature in 3.21 and that PS3 I have is still on 3.15 waiting for Sony or some one else to restore that functionality I paid for.

I'm going to ask you respectfully to keep you opinions to yourself because at least in my case you are absolutely wrong, and I do get angry because you are equating Linux to piracy, guess what, Linux is a major operating system on many different platforms, and I don't see piracy rampant on the Linux system, they use a different philosophy Open Source, sharing knowledge with other users to bring about a better more complete product.

This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like 'Mixview' that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you're listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of "neighbors" will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune "Social" is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.

Dont forget the latter ps3 system's that only have 16mb.. I just find it hard to believe whether it be 16 or 256mb of ram, what difference it would make. Personally my laptop has 3GB of Ram and cannot run most pc games smoothly so if the ps3 can run these awesome games, there must be something more. I thought I read somewhere that the 15/256mb's were flash and not the actual RAM.
