AsbestOS: Running Linux as GameOS

Submitted by greg; October 19, 2010

Sony removes OtherOS and marcan brings it right back... Well, not quite... AsbestOS is actually a bootloader that boots/runs linux under GameOS. The upside to that is you (read: developers/hackers) now have full access to a seventh SPE and the NVIDIA RSX. Mind you, there is much to learn before utilizing all that. Almost everything that works with OtherOS is working with AsbestOS; however, currently AsbestOS is only capable of net booting (no initrd) a kernel from a NFS share or USB storage device.
AsbestOS is a fully independent open source payload and does not contain any code from the original PSJailbreak payload or derivatives. It is licensed under the GPLv2. Compiling it does not require any SDK tools, and it includes a script to build a fully vanilla GNU toolchain for the PS3. If youre interested, check out the git repository. The README file contains information on how to run AsbestOS and how to set up kernels. Currently, ports exist for software USB AVRs (Arduino etc.), iPods, and the reference implementation for devices with a TI OMAP3, but anything currently running PSGroove or similar can be adapted with only a few lines of new code.
In its current state AsbestOS isn't quite ready for the end-user. I mean you can give it a go -- it's not that difficult to setup -- especially if you're well versed in linux. Check out marcan's blog post to learn absolutely everything you need to. P.S. the TI-84+ port has AsbestOS support already.

It would be nice if AsBestOS can mount the existing linux partition from OtherOS. most of us still have Linux installation from the OtherOS, but you know just the boot loader have been disabled.

Very very VERY nice work!

Not quite sure on how Linux handles Qemu but this would be the perfect setup for running it to run, excuse the pun, OtherOS's lol. A nice cut down, non resource hogging linux setup :D

Anyone clued up on Linux know if Qemu would need a special version compiling to use the full access to the PS3, or would it automatically use all resources the Linux OS has access to?

A lot of people have been waiting for Linux, especially those that had it in the past and lost it to play newer games/online. And now slims can use it too :D GREAT work Marcan! :D

@Awesome!: I think that people able to make PS3 like games already today :) The PS3 GameOS already have access to 7 SPEs and the NVIDIA RSX and it is possible to make homebrew to run directly from GameOS =)

Huh? Most of us? It's made for 3.41, and if you're on that firmware, you DON'T have it, since it was forcibly deleted when OtherOS was removed.

marcan, awesome stuff man
i like your pace dude, you really do change the playing field altogether. Didn't think that someone was going to use gameOS to run linux this quick. I thought it would be a good 6 months away or something like that.

Seventh SPE with full RSX access, i can't wait for the 3d porn sims.

hopefully i will be rebuilding on a stable platform.

on a side note i wonder if the USAF will have hunderda of jailbroken ps3s for a supercomputer now.... lol

This should result in some way to boot the console from the HD into grub without needing the dongle.

In grub there should be two options, run Linux, and run PS3 GameOS

Kudos to the AsbestOS developer!

so this could become the primary OS and then have the ability of booting into PS3 GameOs to run Sony's FW from within Linux?

If you sit in a prison don't you want to get out?

But you should probably sell your computer and stick to a less advanced calculator.

To run linux on the ps3 doesn't hurt the game developers so put back your head in the sand and keep on buying everything you see on the commercials.

No, it was never deleted. Take that PS3 HDD and put into into any PC. You'll see that the Linux and swap partitions are still there. The "update" never made you format or anything. All thats gone was the button to switch OS.

I was wondering, since you're using an OMAP3 board, couldn't you integrate the DHCP, TFTP and NFS share directly on it with a SD card and have a standalone solution?
