Ouya Getting a Top-Notch NES Emulator?

Submitted by Christopher Groux; December 18, 2012

If we can rewind back to the beginning of August, you might remember hearing the news about an independent gaming venture known as the Ouya. Essentially the concept here is really pretty simple: this is an entirely open console that allows users to create and develop their  own programs as they please. Unlike the mainstream machines, you won't need any special kind of development unit  to create because every system sold in stores will be endowed with that kind of capability. In a nut shell then, what this console offers is the ability to experience the video game development scene without having to take the hacking risk that you all have experienced or considered with your Nintendos Xboxes and PlayStations.

When it comes to any home-spun scene emulators are always going to be a popular choice. After all, they can be relatively easy to develop when compared to a full-fledged title, and they offer an absolute ton of replay value. That being said, I wasn't too surprised when I heard about the possible upcoming NES emulator  for the unit called EMUya. What's more interesting though is that supposedly a triple A dev responsible for games like Uncharted and Rage will be heading the project. Once completed, EMUya will use all four cores of the processor to provide for one of the best TV emulation solutions around. I don't know about you, but if the Ouya only costs $100 it already seems like a pretty good value.

Are any of you considering getting an Ouya? I personally love the potential of it for emulators so I could see spending $100 on it.

linux [and practically every other OS] already has every emu ported to it and most people own a PC/iPod/Console/Etc which are all capable of running emulators--for free

don't get happy yet, They might sell the emulator, and even only allow it read encrypted roms, wich will also be licensed and sold at low prices, cents probably. We should not look at this and think of the emulators we have on PC or on hacked PSP or NDS, Xbox and PS3...
But we will have free emulators and roms to download. But not on a so good emulator.

Really good point. I hope that's not the case. With how open the system claims to be I'm just crossing my fingers that that's not the case.

Just to let you know the Ouya is an Android based console. That means it will be able to run most (if not all) Android apps. It will have emulators for most systems already so even if this ends up being a commercial emulator there are already free ones so it doesn't matter.

NES must be the most emulated console of all time (and with quality emulators already), so I'd be more excited about a good emulator for another console (SNES? PS2? xD) or even arcades (MAME).
