The PS3 and the PS Vita make a damn good team together, and Sony are doing their best to integrate these features into a great deal of existing and upcoming titles. With the Wii U being released however, it will be interesting to see how Sony respond to such a direct piece of competition.
In my opinion, the PS3/Vita combo are a much better team than the up and coming Wii U for a number of reasons. The Wii U is at a retail maximum of 32GB, however if you wish you can buy an external HDD and "exclusively format it" to accommodate for the installation of games on it. This makes it just as versatile as the PS3 for storage which I commend Nintendo for, with the Wii U now having 1080P games. Comparing to the Vita and PS3, The Vita's games sit at a maximum of 1-2GB in size with variable storage from 4GB to 32GB, and the PS3 with games topping the 15GB mark a maximum retail size of 500GB that you can upgrade with a 2.5" laptop drive if you feel this as being necessary. Also remember if necessary you can store PS Vita game installers on the PS3 for when you need them. For storage, both the Wii U and the PS3/Vita are evenly matched.
Moving on to controllers, The Wii U and the PS3/Vita have their own advantages. The Wii U remote is obviously compatible with all games released for the Wii U, and is the main controller that comes with the console. With the Vita however, this standalone console is only compatible with selected games on the PS3 using "Cross Controller" at this time (PS All Stars and LittleBigPlanet 2 for example). The Wii U obviously has a larger list of games for compatibility, however with this being said if Sony are smart they will release more compatibility updates as the Wii U rolls out worldwide. Vita however can be used absolutely anywhere you want, either to control your PS3 via USB or wirelessly for media and compatible remote play games, or to take the console away and play its own exclusive games. With newer releases also supporting cross play, you can game from Vita to PS3 and vice versa online. This section is up to you to decide, but I see the Vita coming out on top here too.
This last part is treading on thin ice, and very subjective as to what gamer you are and what titles you prefer. This next part is my own opinion, and not pointing out facts as in the previous paragraphs. Between the Wii U and the PS3/Vita, comparing games is a very hard thing to do. So far for me, the only two games on Wii U that have grabbed my attention are Zombie U and Rayman Legends, which have both gotten great write ups and feedback from EB Expo and reviews. Personally however, I still prefer the content that is being released on Sony's consoles. Games like Gravity Rush, Unit 13, Journey, LittleBigPlanet 2's cross play DLC, the WipEout series and the latest competitor to Nintendo "PS All Stars", I see the PS3 and Vita as a much more refreshing and interesting line up than what has been presented for the Wii U.
With all of these points being made, price points are almost evenly balanced too. In Australian dollars, the Wii U comes in at $348 for basic and $428 for premium models, with games launching at $70-$90. For a Vita Wi-Fi bundle (console, game and 4GB card) you pay $298, and around $50-$60 for a big title. PS3 bundles come in at $398 for a 500GB console, 3 games and 2 controllers. New games sit around 60-$80, not factoring in the option of PS Plus. Personally, the PS3/Vita combo comes at a far more affordable price than the Wii U including the price of games. To put that more into perspective with Australian prices:
PS3 package ($398) + PS Vita package ($298) = $696 (2 consoles, 2 controllers and 4 games).
Wii U Premium + 4 games ($80 each) + 1TB external HDD ($80) = $828.
Now while a lot of this is fact, I expect people do disagree with me in a few areas. That is what the comment section is for. Leave your opinion in relation to this controversial rant down below. I will do my best to reply and give my feedback! Hope you enjoyed the read.

I don't have a wiiu yet but your argument against it makes it sound amazing.
As for system price $430 sounds better than $700. Now the games $70-$90 for wiiu but for your preferred combo the game needs to be purchased on both systems so that would be $110-$140
Vita is portable gaming; yes it is. So add the ds or 3ds to the wiiu make it even number of systems, and it is still cheaper.
Don't get me wrong, I would rather have my sony setup too, but this is just biased and misleading; almost on par with the news and politicians.

1. PS3/Vita games better then Wii U section: I know this was an opinion section but really Holmes? This reeked of bias. First off the PS3 has been out for years, of course you like its games more then the Wii U, and the Vita has had a pile of manure for games until the last two months. I think the Wii U is very promising and only time will tell.
2. Price Points: First off the ultimate bundle is a very poor choice to be using as your review Holmes. In the US the ultimate bundle comes WITH a game and EXTRA controllers, and yet there are bundles in toys r us and other places that are cheaper and with more games (cheapest was 450 2 games no extra controllers). Since you choose a PS3 package with only 2 controllers, a Wii U package and 50 slapped on extra for controllers is comparable. Also I am sorry to remind you of this, but the Australian market for games is extremely out of wack, and the rest of the world experiences Wii U games at prices less then 80. I mean 110 for black ops 2? Really? The correct price ratios for this using american money (I would imagine more units would be sold here then there so more relevant, we could also use euros for Europe if you like?) would be (This is a simple united states google shopping search):
PS3 Bundle (1G) 299.99 + Vita Bundle (1G) 249.99 = 549.99
Wii U Bundle (2G) 399.99 - 449.99 + 100 2 Extra Controlers = 499.99 - 549.99
It turns out both combinations are the exact same price in our country, so I think the insane game prices in Australia shouldn't be used as an example.
3. Vita comes out on top over Wii U: This one is bat shit crazy. As it currently stands Sony has no plans on spreading the support of cross play to other games (even though its proven it can via custom firmware) so to blatantly toss out there the Vita will only get better is a fantasy. It took a year and lots of complaining just to get PS1 Support! Until the Vita finally starts looking like a finished product instead of a rushed beta, the Wii U tops it on on almost every level except for portability. Its obvious the vita is slightly more portable then the Wii U.

Anyway though, as much as I like Nintendo, I'm still skeptical to see how well the Wii U actually does. Right now there are a lot of mixed opinions about the system, though it's mostly Nintendo loyalists sticking behind it. I can also see future failure coming out of it, but only time will tell.

1. Understood with your points on this. As stated it was an opinionated section. I guess to me the games on Wii U aren't as appealing. Not to be taken as a first and final for all who want to compare the consoles.
2. This one again can differ greatly depending on where you live, and unfortunately Australia are a bit infamous for overpriced items in the game industry. Since I reside in Australia however, it seemed appropriate to use the prices local to me.
3. If it has been portrayed in this way that I mean the Vita alone is better that was a mistake. I think that in the future, the Vita and PS3 together could compete really well. The Wii U however for a dual screen console is obviously using the technology better.
Once again, thanks heaps for such a level headed and interesting reply!

where do you get your information from? i ask because if you would have looked at the Nintendo site you could have easily found the FAQ section which clearly states the following
"What data can be stored on a USB storage device?
Once a USB storage device has been exclusively configured for use with a Wii U console, it can be used to store games, applications, new downloadable content, application updates and save data. Once a device has been configured for use with a Wii U console, it cannot be used with another Wii U console, PC, etc., unless it is reformatted."
though it does suck that it says it needs to be exclusively formatted for it but a simple partition should work around that

I will reword this sentence to state the facts. Agreed with the fact that it is a complete format for a HDD, but like you said, a partition should hopefully fix that.

No one likes to get hacked or lose money when they have to invest in development.
If you think about it which company give you more for your $$$?
My opinion is Sony and it’s not about whom i prefer because if that were to be the case i rather get a wii but the graphics sucks.
Tell me one thing why do you have to buy batteries or a charging pack for xbox360 or wii?
Why do you have to pay $50 for xbox live to play online when its free on ps3 & wii?I rather pay $50 for PS Plus where i can get discounted & free games.
Why didn't Microsoft put a Blu-ray player on the xbox360 when they upgraded to the better slim version? At least they got something’s right like putting wireless & a web browser finally.
What is MS doing to give its costumers any rewards?
Last but not least the PS3 have been the same since day one with the exception of taking away the backwards compatible to PSX & PS2 games.
So tell me which is giving more bang for your buck?

But i must agree with some people here, you did seem a tad bias.

After reading this over a couple of times again, I can see the points that come of as biased.
I honestly think the Wii U will come out as a great platform, I'm just hopeful that with a "similar" combination, Sony will actually try and compete.
Thanks for your feedback!
