EXCLUSIVE: 20 Questions With Davee

Keeping with the times here comes our next installment of "20 Questions with a Dev" starring Davee. At this point most of you know who Davee is and what he does.  In case you don't, he delivers massive progression with his mad code skills. If you've been living under a rock have a read of his latest work with Kermit.  In this interview we ask him about his work with Kermit, PS Vita PSP HEN, and what he hopes to accomplish.  So have a read of what he had to say and enjoy.

1. How long have you been developing your own software?
Almost 8 years now. You're making me feel old!

2. What's your favorite development language and why?
Probably C++, I'm a sucker for OOP design and management. Other than that, I use C or in special case, Java.

3. Are there any suggestions you would give to people who are just starting to write code?
It's a trap! Have a dabble at some online tutorials or a good book. Also, don't be afraid to experiment! You can't break the PC by toying with a hello world so just give it a bash and try to explore your chosen language. 

4. What's your Favorite video game system of all time?
Tough one... probably my PS2. Was brought up on that system.

5. Whats your favorite video game?
Ace Combat: Squadron leader, no contest.

6. You've been hard at work on a few different projects like Chronoswitch, Mac address spoofer, and now the PS Vita PSP HEN, what inspires you to do the things you do?
Technical challenges mostly. I don't particularly have much focus on development. I've released some dabblings into new areas such as the mac + version spoofer and chickHEN. The technicality work is more orientated around the TA-088v3 IPL design and boot process research, 09g -> 04g downgrading, IDStorage analysis, KIRK 0x10 private key encryption, VSH floating point number descrambler. Recently you've seen the kermit documentation.

7. How long did you bang your head against the wall before you got any results on PS Vita PSP HEN?
Not very long, there are some problems as it is a reduced kernel but it didn't take long to port a HEN. Really, the problem of somebody replicating our work is the exclusion of a kernel exploit. PRO should mostly work as-is and I can assist in the areas of difference, if needed. I'd like to see my results replicated.

8. What is your end goal for PS Vita PSP HEN?
Well, kermit. The youtube video was only passed around a group of friends on IRC, kind of exploded after that. There on though, I added contact info to the video so that people can get in contact for some co-operation on either kermit or the functionality of the HEN. Unfortunately, there will be no public release of the HEN as: a) it's some1's kernel exploit b) it would be closing my own door c) no effective way to distribute an exploit, yet. I'll stress, we are good for assisting people understand the psp emu kernel.

9. I know youre getting involved with Kermit now, what exactly is Kermit and what do you hope to learn from it?
Kermit is the communications service from the host (vita) to the psp emu. The final goal is a little unclear at best, but it would be nice to try and learn more about the vita's underlying system or even extend functionality of the PSP emu.

10. Do you have any plans to work any other consoles?
I tinker around with android but for consoles, no other plans.

11. What Dev do you think is someone to watch in the future?
There are so many! I'm keeping my eye on Coldbird for now. I'm a big fan of his work, and specifically the work with "PRO Online". Very awesome. I'm also keeping a close eye on all the PS Vita developers, of course!

12. What do you love / hate about the current state of the Mod community as a whole?
Well, I try not to integrate myself too deep with it, or I end up in trouble like with ChickHEN. So, I hate the drowning pain of all the pirates moaning about things, I dislike people who believe I am not allowed to share accomplishments on the web because they aren't going to immediately get their hands on it. I like the developers and the curious minds. I'm always up for helping developers, as long as they are polite about it. As for the curious minds, I am interested in other things too, and it's nice to be able to understand something, without too much jargon.

13. Is there anything you would like to undo in the Mod community?
In hindsight, the 6.10 Typhoon video was childish. There is sharing your achievements and there is being a dick. It's quite obvious which one that one was.

14. What one release in the scene would make your life easier as a dev?
learn_all.exe

15. Whats the funniest moment you can think of?
Man, this is hard. Real life banter! Although a specific instance was putting my mate's bed out of his dorm into the hallway when he was away. His reaction was priceless.

16. Whats the scariest thing that ever happened to you?
Couldn't find my dog when I was supposed to be looking after him. Found him eventually, sleeping under the bed.

17. Xbox360 or PS3 what do you prefer?
Tough choice. I have a PS3 though, a YLoD model. So i'm gonna pick 360.

18. Whats your favorite TV show?
At the moment: How I met your Mother.

19. What kind of music do you like to listen to, and whats your favorite band?
Lots and lots of music. Probably my favorite artist is Daft Punk.

20. Its time to wrap this up so Ill ask the obligatory stupid question to finish this off, Room, desk and car – which do you clean first?
Mop the window with the cat, near sand, on a hill.
