So the Vita got one of its two previously announced features yesterday. Now that users are Skyping it up, maybe the heads at Sony have turned their focus towards getting that other feature going... PS1 games.
Earlier today, a PS1 classic, Buzz Lightyear of Star Command, appeared on the European PS Store for purchase. Before it was removed, ryukyu22 was able to download the game and get it installed on the Vita. However, the hope of having PS1 support dried up quickly.
When trying to launch the game, the Vita reported it as corrupted. That was the end of trying for that. The good news behind this however, is that the LiveArena has been updated to have a PS1 themed screen. This could be indicative that Sony is moving closer to throwing the switch for PS1 games.
My word to Sony is, what are you waiting for? What's taking so long? There's many people like me who want their PS1 classics on the go, on their eye appealing Vita. I don't have one for myself but I definitely would enjoy playing Crash Bandicoot without having to relocate the PS3 to my room, each and every time. Yes, I may have a PSP but I'm too lazy to search for the charger.
Anyways, read up more at the sources below.

The silliest thing they haven't added yet is support for PS+ purchased games. I've got quite a few Minis that would work fine on the Vita if they just flicked a switch somewhere to allow me to download them.

for ps1 games you not only need the games, you also need an emulator, probably in the next update

They never said PS2 games would be playable on the Vita. If they ever do make them playable, it'll probably be pretty far in the future.

They probably put it up just to hint an update that supports it. However until the crash and spyro games are on there I'll keep VHBL
