Just like the PS3 Sony built a recovery menu into the PS Vita. Its no real big surprise but this is how you can access it if you need to.
How to access the "Recovery Menu/Mode" on PS Vita :
- Turn OFF your PS Vita (Press Power Button for 10 seconds)
- Now press and hold R + Power + PS (PlayStation Button)
- Wait…
- Now youre in Recovery Menu/Mode
Here you will find a few options here is the list and what they do, lets hope you never have to use them:
1. Restart System
Boots your system as normal without changing any settings or files.
2. Rebuild Database
Rewrite corrupted files within the database, potentially eliminating future issues. This feature should not erase any of your saved data or settings.
3. Format the memory card
Format or erase data in the memory card.
4. Restore PS Vita System
Restore the system to factory settings, data, firmware and internal flash.
5. System Update
Allow the user to update the latest firmware from Sony.

Would the restore feature really reset the firmware to that in which it came with at launch? I would think that it would retail the latest version because if for instance Sony patched an exploit, and someone updated their system, then wished to hack their console...they could just restore it and get a fully hackable firmware again! While im not going to test it, im sure Sony would have thought of this!

Can't wait for a custom recovery menu.

You are forced to update to the last update the vita had.
For example: the highest fw is 1.61 and you've never updated. If the vita you bought had fw 1.59 and you update to 1.60, then when you do this restore you have to update to 1.60 or 1.61. It always has to be the same or higher. It can never be a lower firmware or it wont work. If you try to use the 1.59 update it won't work.

Why do you have to hold three buttons?
Just hold the power button until it turns off, and when it turns back on it'll bring you to the recovery menu...
