According a couple of clever users at Wololo.net, some PS Vita's at the Gamescom event have been spotted running a debug version firmware at version 1.69.1
As most hackers know, these kinds of firmwares are used for developers to test out games, so in a sense they are a version of the operating system that runs with all of the extra security features to enable the running of unsigned content.
This OS is no different in that it indeed allows packages to run without any sort of CMA getting involved, Aside from the basics, a developer also has the option to fake a lot of settings as a testing method. For example, designers have the ability to emulate certain hardware functions such as a 3G connection or different region codes as well.
Perhaps the most interesting feature about this firmware is that it is protected with a layer of security that requires it to be registered with a new key every ninety days. Most likely inspired by all of you with DEX PS3s, this little caveat will likely prevent any hackers from making their system a development device.
While we may never be able to use it, the debug firmware by Sony does deserve a well played from the hacking community. If you want to see it in action, you can check out this video.
