Everyone loves toting around an iPhone that is jailbroken and unlocked. Apple has been making the latter harder to accomplish, by introducing new basebands in their firmware updates. This limits ultrasn0w, at least until a new update is released.

Right after the release of ios 5.1, the dev team updated the well known tool redsn0w so that all devices capable of ios 5.1 were able to obtain a tethered jailbreak. Sn0wBreeze was also updated so that unlockers can upgrade their device using a CFW and still obtain their unlock status.

Vooma has announced an iPhone case with a backup battery and an unlocked SIM slot, which adds to it's awesomeness The case works with a jailbreak only app that emulates the iPhone's native phone app to allow calls via the external SIM. Essentially, the case unlocks any jailbroken iPhone.
John Biggs, from TechCrunch tried a pre-release version of the case and was, apparently, very impressed.

The iPhone Dev Team is still hard at work unlocking the iPhone 3G, luckily they are keeping everyone in the loop in regards to their progress. They haven't achieved an unlock yet but they have reached a milestone on that road by successfully downgrading the modem baseband firmware to an older version. Here is their screenshot:
This image is the About screen from a 3G iPhone that was bought in a store last week. As you can see the modem firmware version has been successfully downgraded to an older beta firmware. This is not an unlock (yet), but it is our illustration of the first progress made with regard to hacking the 3G baseband.
We have accomplished this by being able to execute our own code on the baseband that allows us to circumvent security checks and flash the baseband with older, disallowed firmware. Please note this has been accomplished using software only, the iPhone 3G has not been disassembled or hardware modified in any way.

I've come across many reports on various forums with users experiencing difficulty while interacting with the Turbo SIM using turbo-info and/or turbo-app. That said, iZsh has released turbo-smsreset. By the way, this software is only of use if you're using the Turbo SIM unlock method for the iPhone.
It seems there is a bug which prevents the Turbo Sim from being properly programmed when the SMS storage is full (why the turbo sim is full is another question).
This utility deletes the SMSs from the Turbo Sim, and this should, hopefully, solve the ERRORs while running turbo-info/turbo-app.
To use: disable CommCenter, on the iPhone run:
# launchctl unload /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.CommCenter.plist
Lets assume you've already copied turbo-smsreset to your iPhone with proper execution privileges, so run it:
# turbo-iphone-smsreset
Proceed with running turbo-info or turbo-app, and it should hopefully work with no errors.
Then re-enable CommCenter:
# launchctl load -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.CommCenter.plist
Note: it's not necessary to reboot the iPhone.
I hope this helps some iPhone hackers out there.

Update: Apparently AT&T lawyers have put a stop to their plan. *sniff* *sniff* I smell bullshit. Rest assure, a software unlock is just around the corner. Whether or not it's these guys, someone is going to make it happen.
My spidey senses never fail me. More reports around the web are stating that a hardware-free unlock is near; in fact, John McLaughlin plans to release their software solution tomorrow between noon and 2 p.m. Eastern time. The quoted paragraph says it all...
...John McLaughlin, founder of Uniquephones, said his Belfast, U.K., company will be posting software on Saturday that iPhone users can download to unlock their handsets to work with any SIM (Subscriber Identity Module) card on any network they choose. The software should hit the Web at www.iphoneunlocking.com between noon and 2 p.m. Eastern Time, he said.
The software is tagged with the price of somewhere between $25 to $50 (USD). I guess that is yet to be decided... Although, users who have already signed up with iphoneunlocking.com will receive a 25 or 50 percent discount. Not bad -- cheaper than a Turbo SIM.
Can you feel the excitement?! Keep your eyes peeled and your pants on. See you tomorrow!

I received an email from these guys (iphonesimfree.com) a few days ago, claiming they've achieved a complete software-based solution to unlock the iPhone. At first glance I figured a hoax, wouldn't you? Well, a few days after the fact, Engadget now has a review of their product, and boy was I wrong -- it's legit! Rightfully so, these guys are charging a [unknown] fee for their iPhone unlocking software. Individual per unit licenses will be available starting next week.
Furthermore, this method is said to be "restore/upgrade resistant." Of course Apple could potentially disable the SIM unlock with future iPhone software updates, but who knows for certain...
Anyway, my apologies for doubting these guys. Amazing work, truly. Now as I continue sendin' SMS and makin' calls from my Turbo-SIM unlocked iPhone, the rest of you will have to wait a bit longer. Sorry, had to brag a bit. ;)
