MacRumors has obtained a memo posted by FedEx that details that a [training] class has been postponed due to an upcoming "surge event" to take place during the weekend of September 21. They believe that the surge event is referencing the rumored date of the iPhone 5 release, if not the expected ship date. With this postponed class, FedEx is also limiting employees' travels. This is normal practice with any company in fact, that is preparing for a huge release. As MacRumors points out, FedEx is usually the main carrier used for shipping in the United States, sometimes turning to UPS for additional help.
If the release is indeed the surge event that the memo is referring to, then I guess that you can set your calendars to September 21st and start counting down to that. Just keep in mind that we still have to get through the reveal event, which may set a different date altogether. If any news surfaces, we'll be sure to have it right here for you.
