Don't Have Your Keys In The Same Pocket As Your iPhone 5

Submitted by Kevmau5; September 23, 2012

Some folks have noticed that even just having their iPhone in their pocket, that the iPhone 5 is prone to getting scratches and scuff marks around the edges and on the anodized alluminium back. (Anodized is where the Aluminium was mixed with a dye to give it it's colour) Not neccessarily with any heavy handling either.

Here's a quote from one of the unhappy users:
"Ditching the glass back and reducing the thickness of the glass panel on the front has affected the design of the metal band around the edge of the iPhone. It is now chamfered and while that looks pretty, we've already noticed that on the black model the edge has started to wear, revealing the shiny silver aluminium metal underneath the "slate" coloured coating and, indeed, we've witnessed it on two separate models, ruling out a fluke manufacturing error. "

The photo below (that's doing the rounds) is from a user over at overclocker forums. He uesd the sim tray and some keys. Obviousy the results seem a little harsh. I believe he was taking no prisoners.

So whether you have the white iPhone or the black / slate iPhone....I would invest in a case of some sort. Preferrably a rubber one as plastic ones can still sometimes leave traces of themselves.

People call it scratch or sruff marks. Apple calls it custom engraving. xD

You would expect this type of testing before selling the product. Once again someone will make a claim and Apple will come out on top.
