iPhone Official Apps

December 11, 2012

It's true that we may have just got the iPhone 5 out into the mass market, but that certainly will never stop the 5S rumor mill from churning.  This new release speculates about a possible release month and a whole bunch of new features.

Companies are trying to say that Mobile Gaming is getting bigger and better (when I say mobile I mean a Phone or Tablet). But is it really that great? Whoever claims that needs a roundhouse kick to the face.

If you're one of the many users that likes to take advantage of the Facebook Messenger app, as  of yesterday you now have quite a bit to  be excited about. With a retooled interface and the addition of some new swiping gestures, keeping touch with your friends has never been more intuitive on iOS.

For owners of the iPhone 5, there are few things more impressive than that gorgeous new 4-inch screen. At that size, the retina display has never looked more beautiful, but the unfortunate reality is a lot of the apps you're going to be using at this very moment aren't updated to accommodate for the extra space.

Apple has made a smart move by registering a new patent, this is a great idea to stop all the lawsuits surrounding patent infringement, but even more of a great idea because of what the patent is for...

How long have you wanted an alternative browser for your iDevice? Opera, for me, was the only other great browser, but it wasn't especially suitable. Google has finally stepped up to the mark.

Battlefield 3 has been out for quite a while. If the game has been a little stale as of late, maybe taking it to your iOS device is what you need to get back into it. Just make sure to toss it in the same container as Halo & Call of Duty.

Today, Apple has released an updated version of their Garageband iPad application to have support for iPhone and iPod Touch alike. Before, Apple had Garageband restricted to iPad only, but now that's all changed. For the best, it appears.

One of my favourite iDevice games on the AppStore -- Boost 2 -- It's extremely fun and addictive. The objective of the game is to avoid crashing into obstacles by tilting your iDevice. By running over little Boost arrows that appear on occasion, the player gains speed and the ability to bust right through obstacles without perishing. The goal is to survive as long as you can!

Pabusily Co Ltd has released this game, Crane Driver. It's a game simulator of crane drivers. It's a rather unique game, I've never encountered one like this at the AppStore. The objective is to get the load from one platform to another without changing the position of the loads.
  • Game mission - a player operates a crane and must relocate load consisting of several objects from one platform to another. Load position relative to each of its parts mustn't be changed.
  • Mission - game mode where a player is able to choose levels.
  • Campaign - complete several tasks in various locations.
  • Railway - relocate load from one train to another using a crane with magnet;
  • Sea port - relocate load from one ship to another using bridge crane with a spreader plow;
  • Supermarket - relocate a pile of objects from one place to another using a stacker;
  • Building yard - discharge a truck with the help of tower crane with a hook.
  • Crane control differs depending on the location.
  • Right, left, up and down movements are possible if there are vertical and horizontal axes. Pressing the button makes lifting body automatically grip the load and lift it up (or put it down and return upward).

Crane Driver costs $0.99USD and is available in the AppStore. A short review after the break. Alright, so at first I was very excited to try this game out. I'm a big fan of cranes and whatnot, but this game disappointed me. The graphics are disappointed, and the actual missions are a let down. I was expecting something a crane would do in real life, such as grab a big wall of a building and set it in-place for workers to join it to the building. Sadly, this was not the case.
The controls are okay, it doesn't take advantage of the iPhone 4's gyroscope or even the previous iPhone's accelerometer, very disappointing. You must either push a button to move your hook from left to right, and even then you can only move to 3 different positions -- left, center, right -- you can't move a tiny bit to either side, it must be in a set position all the way to the left, right or center. Once you're in the desired position, you must push another button to lower your hook to grab the load. You can use the touchscreen to move your hook and lower your hook in one tap, but I was never able to get used to that control.
Overall, I feel as the graphics could be better but for $0.99USD, you get what you pay for.

PlantPedia, an iPhone plant reference application, perfect for students, instructors, and scientists in-need of an excellent, and easy to use plant reference app.
The most comprehensive Plant Reference iPhone App for Scientists, Instructors, and students. PlantPedia provides a wealth amount of information about over seven thousands of commonly seen Plants. Information such as scientific name, common name, states, growth form, flower, fruit and seed, foliage, etc, which can be as detailed as to what are the active growth period, minimum PH, seeds per pound, foliage texture, leaf retention properties, and many more. On top of those, there are pictures of each plants: seeds, leaves, flowers, drawings, and other diagrams. The most attractive feature is the "identify" function of the PlantPedia App, one can try to identify a plant by its flower color, foliage color, growth form, and shape and orientation. PlantPedia requires no internet connection to use, which makes it a very handy tool to identify and gain Plants knowledge outdoor.

Features:
  • This version collects 7251 Plants
  • Browse by Plant name alphabetically
  • Browse by States
  • Instant name search while browsing
  • Identify Plants by flower color, foliage color, growth form, and shape and orientation

  • Scientific description for all plant properties

You can narrow down your search for plants via name and states or identify a plant via flower colour, foliage colour, growth form, and shape & orientation. The information on the specific plant you select is very informative, shows the growth of the plant, its habitat, scientific & common name; along with images of the plant.
One feature which is missing and I wish it had, is the ability to take a picture of an unknown plant with this application and narrow down potential plants.

Major hit with curious kids who like plants and want to learn more about them.
PlantPedia is $4.99USD and available at the AppStore.

ContactDel
One of the things that annoys me the most about cleaning up my address book is having no way of deleting multiple contacts at once without having to connect to a computer. Amazingly, if you want to delete multiple contacts, you have to delete them one by one. ContactDel, by developer Albert Zhang, fulfills my wishes. ContactDel gives you the ability to select multiple contacts (by name) and delete them with a touch of a button -- simply amazing. If you want to do major cleaning and delete them all at once, there's an app for that -- It's called ContactDel. That's right, at the touch of a button all your contacts go 'poof.'
Description:
Use ContactDel to Save Time when Cleaning up Your Address Book. Now You Can Delete All Contacts on the iPhone with a Touch of a Button. Believe it or not, if you want to wipe out all your contacts on the iPhone, you have to do it by deleting one at a time! That's inconvenient! Certainly, one can reset the iPhone, but then you'll lose all music, movie, and photos as well. Of course, you can also create an empty contact file at a specific location on your PC or Mac, or maybe a database file, then connect your iPhone, then sync so that the contacts will be "wiped out". Yeah, that's too complicated, and what if you don't have access to a PC or Mac?

In case you mistakenly deleted a contact or contacts, ContactDel gives you the option to restore deleted contacts. Please note, only first name, last name, phone number, address, email can be restored. Contact photo, notes, homepage, and ringtone setting are permanently deleted.
In addition, you can sync your contacts with an external app "Synkontact" -- Pretty cool eh?
ContactDel [iTunes Link] is $0.99USD on the AppStore

Crazy Coin Christmas [AppStore link] , by developer Albert Zhang, is perfect for those who are in a Christmas spirit and/or kids who want a fun and addictive game. This has very cute graphics that'll put a smile on kids' faces!
Description:
Crazy Coin gives seasons greetings! Collect gold coins under the shining Christmas tree! 30 new levels specifically designed for the holiday season! Santa Claus, reindeer, Christmas trees, gifts, shiny lights, the snow man, and many many more! Perfects for kids to play while counting down Christmas and the new years eve!

The objective of the game is to collect gold coins to advance to the next level. Different objects come raining from 'sky' and you have to trap them on your Christmas bag while avoid many different vicious Christmas tree ornaments which deduct points from your score. Watch out though, get below zero points and you will fail the level!

The controls are super simple for anyone to jump on in to the game. Even those with zero experience will quickly get the hang of it! All you do is tilt the iPhone (or iPod Touch) to the left or right depending which direction you want to go. Simple as that.
At first, the sensitivity of the tilt seemed a bit too low but after a little while, you get used to it. The settings provides you with two options for the sensitivity of the tilt, Normal and Sensitive. The setting 'sensitive' is, naturally, faster than 'normal' and feels a lot better for someone who just feels the bag is moving just too slow. The setting 'normal' is perfect for kids or someone who feels the other setting is just too fast. If you'll be letting your kids play this, I suggest leaving it on normal.
The music is all Christmas Holiday inspired, which is nice for the kids and those who always enjoy the spirit-lifting Christmas jingles. Those who, like me, get sick of all the Christmas songs before Christmas actually arrives will want to turn off the music in the settings menu. The kids will thank you if you leave the music on.

The levels are very nice, with very good graphics, with 30 levels you will plenty of levels to play this while counting down to Christmas Day and New Years Day! Remember, you must get a score it requires you to pass till the next level. Avoid the malicious ornaments and aim for the gold coins, stars and presents. The malicious ornaments will deduct points while the coins, stars and gifts will make you gain points.
Crazy Coin Christmas

Overall, the game is perfect for kids and those with lots of Christmas Holiday spirit and want to enjoy a nice game while patiently waiting for Christmas Day.
As always, Merry Christmas from Dashhacks!

Crazy Coin Christmas [AppStore link] is free on the AppStore.

Didiom Pro
Folks over at Didiom have developed this nice application that enables you to stream your audio collection to your iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad. It's an easy and quick way to get all your audio on your PC streamed to your iDevice via WiFi or 3G. So if your music collection is just so big that all of it doesn't fit on your iDevice, even when choosing the "Convert to 128kbps AAC" on iTunes, this application is then perfect solution for you.
Didiom Pro is the fastest and safest way to stream your audio collection directly from your computer to your iPhone. With Didiom Pro, you can stream your music, podcasts, audiobooks, and playlists, regardless of your iPhones storage capacity or desktop media player. Its as simple as controlling the volume. Whats more, you can also shuffle your music on your iPhone and enjoy high-quality streaming over 3G or Wi-Fi networks anywhere in the world. All of this is available to you for only $9.99 a year.

Didiom Pro gives you the option to choose what quality your audio streams at -- 64kbps or 128kbps -- it would be nice to have at least 256kbps for those of us who can hear the difference between 128kbps and 256kbps, but 128kbps is just fine for those times when you want something to load quickly and still have great quality audio. 64kbps is perfect for those who are on EDGE.
Didiom Pro

I hate to say, the iPhone application UI and graphics seem like they were threw on at the last second; it definitely needs some polishing. The song/artist selection menu also needs an alphabetic scroll bar, it's a real nightmare to scroll through thousands of artists or songs to find the one you want.
The controller menu is nice and big so you know what buttons to press to do what you want in an instant, however, it needs some polishing as it just looks like the graphics and prettiness of everything was thought of last.
Despite the looks of the application, it's a very functional application, that works as intended.
Now, let's talk about the desktop application you must have running in order for this to work. It's just as simple, when you install the desktop application, it asks you to either sign in with your existing account information or create one. If you create one, it asks you for a username, password, email address, and your name -- fill out the forms and you're set. It automatically adds your iTunes default music folder, scans your collection, and then you can go to the iPhone application and start streaming your collection. Easy as pie.
For now, the Didiom Desktop application is for Windows only, however, there is a Mac OS X version in the works which should be released within the next few months.
Didiom Pro is subscription based, it costs $9.99 annually. Once your 12 months expire, you simply "renew" your subscription by purchasing the application again.

MyIPaddress screenshot
Ever wondered what IP address you were on? MyIPaddress makes it amazingly easy for you to know what IP address you're using, both internal and external. Sure you can you go to a service such as ipchicken.com but why do that when you have a the option for a quick and super fast way to check your IP with this application.
Sadly, this does not display your IP as soon as you open the application -- It would be so much better if it did -- but it gives you a 3 options:
  • Detect now: Displays your internal and external IP on the black white space on the application
  • Copy to clipboard: It copies your IP to your clipboard, so you can paste your IP anywhere you want (Very handy)
  • Share via E-mail: It allows you to send yourself and/or others your IP address
The application also shows your history, so you'll have access to all the IP's the application has detected at your finger tips.
It would be really nice if MyIPaddress detected the IPs on-launch, or at least have an option to enable such feature. As well as background IP detection, so if you're on Wi-Fi and drop down to 3G or move to another Wi-Fi hotspot, the application will detect the change. But overall, this is a very handy application for those who need quick IP address detection. and best of all, this application is free.
MyIPaddress [iTunes link] and it's available on the AppStore for free.

Opera's web browser, Opera Mini for iPhone, has been shockingly approved by Apple and is now available in the AppStore.
Opera Mini, with more than 50 million users worldwide, enables fast mobile Web browsing by compressing data by up to 90 percent before sending content to the device, resulting in significantly improved page loading. Users of the app will notice an uptake in speed, especially on slower networks such as the 2G Edge network. Surfing the Web with the Opera Mini App on iPhone and iPod touch will also help users save money because of its data compression capabilities. This will hold especially true while the user is incurring roaming charges.
Opera submitted the application late last month, and since then everyone seemed to forget about it along with doubting its approval by Apple -- Opera also started a count-up timer to keep track of how long it had been in Apple's hands for review -- 20 Days 08 Hours 31 Minutes 00 Seconds
Opera Mini Web Browser [iTunes Link] is free and available now in the AppStore
