In the past, Apple patents have typically been at least just a little bit ridiculous and presumptuous. For example we've seen documents related to products like the iPen or even cooling fans that dispense air through the device's headphones. Essentially what Apple does by putting out all of these ideas early is to make sure that nobody else can come up with the idea before they do, so in a sense they look to file for anything and everything that looks like it may even have the slightest possibility of appearing on the market.
Still, if we take a look at this concept for a method of wireless charging, it doesn't exactly seem all that far-fetched. That's more or less because it is in most cases a direct copy of many of that patents that are already out there by conglomerates like The Alliance for Wireless Power which Apple is already a member of. So what's the major difference that allows the Big A to say that they have completely invented something new? The distance of course! The patent says that its charging travels "over the air" up to a meter rather than "close proximity" like competing documentation suggests. Copy or not, I think we all would like to be able to charge our iPhones while they stayed in our pockets.
