Downgrading iOS 6.XX-5.1.1 Tutorial

Submitted by Christopher Groux; December 06, 2012

If you follow the iOS scene, you probably know that there are indeed some tethered jailbreaks available for iOS 6 and their respective betas. If you've been using one of those options however, there's no doubt that the need to be so tied down to your computer at all times probably stands to get on your nerves quite a bit. If that's the case, then you probably can't wait to get back to an OS like 5.1.1 that allowed  for the ever elusive untethered jailbreak that allowed for the completely free and hacked use of the device. Now thanks to a little trickery with RedSn0w making the jump back to that earlier firmware shouldn't be too much of a problem. All you need is an A4 based device (iPhone 4 or earlier, iPod Touch 4G or earlier) on a 6.XX firmware and your backed up SHSH blobs from 5.1.1.

  • First grab the latest RedSn0w for Windows or Mac
  • Download iOS 5.1.1
  • Extract RedSn0w and run the file
  • Navigate to Extras/Even More/Restore/IPSW and click the 5.1.1 file you just downloaded
  • If you use an unlock, click "yes" for "prevent baseband update"
  • Follow the on screen instructions to put your device in DFU mode
  • The device will be exploited. Should it not find your blobs in Cydia, you can always locate them on your computer
  • Let RedSn0w do it's thing, and in time you'll be restored to 5.1.1 and can revert back to an untethered jailbreak

I know lots of you keep tabs and know how to do this sort of thing, but hopefully this will help a few scene newcomers.

Have any of you even considered jumping to a 6.0 jailbreak? To me tethered just seems like such a hassle. After all you never know when your device could crash unexpectedly...

IOS 6.0 is the worse IOS ever released.
5.11 is the latest that is good enough for your device and its untethered jailbroken so its the best for your device.
