Adobe Discontinues Development of Flash Player on Mobile Devices

Submitted by Dan; November 11, 2011

Looks like you can forget about ever having Adobe's Flash Player on your iDevice anytime soon... although, who had high hopes anyway, right? ZDNet is reporting that Adobe has announced that the company (Adobe) has discontinued development on Flash Player for mobile browsers. The news comes about a year and a half after the publication of Steve Jobs' "Thoughts on Flash" open letter, explaining out his thoughts on the use of Flash in mobile devices along with why Apple would not support Flash on their mobile devices. Adobe, instead, plans to to continue developing its tools to produce applications that work on mobile app stores, including Apple's App Store. As per Adobe's announcement, their future work with Flash player on mobile devices will be focused on enabling Flash developers to package native apps with Adobe AIR for all the major app stores. Adobe will no longer be adapting Flash Player for mobile devices to new browser, OS version or device configurations. Although, some of their source code licensees may continue working on and releasing their own implementations. Adobe notes that they will continue to support the current Android and PlayBook configurations with critical bug fixes and security updates. - source: blogs.adobe
