Apple Fighting Installous/AppTrackr

Submitted by Dan; December 30, 2011

It looks like Apple has started to take a stand and start its war against piracy. AppTrackr, the well-known marketplace for cracked iOS applications has announced today in a blog post that Apple began sending "take down" notices over violation of iOS application copyrights. AppTrackr is a copy of Apple's app store that contains a cracked copy of AppStore applications. AppTrackr is being used via Installous (an iPhone jailbreak app) that allows jailbroken users to install cracked apps on their jailbroken devices. AppTrackr crew are moving their servers to countries without copyrights law in order to protect AppTrackr form Apple's rage against piracy. Obviously with the wide range of applications that AppTrackr makes available, it could potentially hurt some of Apples sales. To combat Apples war, the crew at AppTrackr have moved several of their servers offshore to countries without copyright laws and have added CAPATCHA code to all outbound links. AppTrackr will now place an ad on the CAPATCHA page to pay for moving servers. What is your opinion on this? How many of you use Installous or AppTrackr? Let us know in the comments!

While there are people that will use AppTrackr for illigitimate use, there are those that use it to try out applications before they buy it.

Unlike Android, the app store doesn't have a refund policy, so apps like "I am Rich" which are purchase "by mistake" can be refunded.

Besides, cracked applications are usually not up-to date, and it's annoying to have to keep re-downloading it every time there is an update. I'm sure there are many out there that try out apps, and then, when the price is right, or when they feel that they want to encourage the devs, actually buy them. It's what I personally do.

AppTrackr is a tool. Some people just find destructive ways to use the tool. Imagine if they banned the use of some of our other potentially destructive tools around our home! Sure, there will be people that use them in the 'wrong' way, but banning these tools would make those that use it legitimately at a loss and a disadvantage.

It also crashes the App Store when you try to open it. I had restore my phone and re-jailbreak it.

Where is AppTrackr found?

On another note MyWi 5 crashed the phone on install.

Piracy is piracy, stop trying to sugar-coat it with good intentions and false promises.

There are refund periods and "lite/free" versions of almost every app on the market, if you can't afford .99 cents for a common app then maybe you shouldn't own a mobile device in the first place.

And a hammer is a hammer, it can be used to help build a house or murder someone. Point is no one is arguing over what it is just whether or not it is beneficial.

Also there are no lite or free versions for many apps. Such as tomtom's gps app which is around $50 and is not worth the money but I would not have known that if I had not tried it first.

Lastly it is not a matter of being able to "afford" something. If I or many other individuals just bought everything we could "afford" we would be broke. In financial matters, at least for those of us who do not make as much money as we would like to, it is crucial to be prudent so that we can get by.

Until Apple doesn't offer trial periods for all the apps sold on the appStore then AppTrackr is legitimate if you ask me. Also, at one point I didn't have the latest firmware and some of the apps I bought in the past were upgraded and required a newer fw version. AppTrackr solved that as it allowed me to grab the older version of the app I had before formatting.

Apple execs are bathing in gold because Stevie bJobs died and now they can extend their greedy fist into everyone's colon and leave an Apple in there. The current profits aren't enough, they need more, more, until humanity implodes and the AppStore is all that's left.
I say start a donation fund for the AppTrackr crew and help them stay afloat.
Apple will be around for a while but as far as running their AppStore with a sense of customer service, a refund policy and full-version trials, long live Installous & AppTrackr
