A few days ago, the iOS development community was given a huge shock when a hacker known as Antisec released a large number of Apple development IDs to the public sphere. While the unknown assailant claims that the information was leaked through a file on an FBI agent's computer, the Cupertino kids and the bureau have come back at this allegation with their own response.
In this case that could be both damaging to our government as well as one of our nation's most beloved companies, it seems that both sides of the equation seem to be calling the supposed hack a false rumor created by an internet user looking for attention. In statement uttered by Apple spokesperson Natalie Kerris early yesterday morning, she states ""The FBI has not requested this information from Apple, nor have we provided it to the FBI or any organization. Additionally, with iOS 6 we introduced a new set of APIs meant to replace the use of the UDID and will soon be banning the use of UDID." From that statement then we can see that the company is certainly covering its tracks from any similar action in the future.
While the FBI seems to be taking a similar stance by validating Apple's claims, at the very least this event has made many members of the tech industry suspicious, Whether this hack actually happened or not, it has raised a red flag to make at least some of us wonder what information Apple does have, and where does it all go. With so many users to its name, there is no question that the government would probably love access to those databases. Still, if the above statement is any consolation, we can pretty safely slide this one into the fake category.
