Another Monday means another round up of all the stories that got you hot and bothered over this past week. In the biggest show of variety we've ever had, I've got five different stories on five different consoles for this edition, so pretty much unless you're a devout Xbox scene member this article should have just about everything you need. Who's ready for another dose of this hacker's opinion?

With Valve's recent talk about making living room PCs, the industry has been abuzz wondering if the console wars will be ready to handle a new yet tried and true competitor from computers. Is the industry going to change?

When a series like Resident Evil is called a mistake, any member of the development scene should take notice. However, if it's up to Epic Games dev Cliff Bleszinski, he has tweeted hopes of "fixing" the series.

Following up on yesterday's RedSn0w upgrade, we also have some pretty big news for those preserving their baseband for unlocking as well. If you've got an iPhone 4 or 3GS, you can now say goodbye to those carrier restrictions with the latest build of UltraSn0w Fixer.

Here's the deal, developer sbingner (author of TetherMe) has made awesome progress making a new hactivation method that kills two birds with one store for all ultrasn0w unlockers. This tool, "SAM" or "Subscriber Artificial Module" tricks your iPhone and iTunes into creating legit activation tickets even though you're unlocked with ultrasn0w. What does this mean? It means, you get full benefits of push notifications and substantially more battery life.
To use SAM:

• Add http://repo.bingner.com as a repo in Cydia
• Install "SAM" and "SAMPrefs"
• Follow the steps in Troubleshooting/Hacktivated with redsn0w or PwnageTool
• Go to Settings > SAM and touch "De-Activate iPhone"
• Activate with iTunes
• If iTunes says invalid SIM, you will need to manually select the appropriate carrier under one of the methods besides "Automatic" and click on a SIMID.

In addtion, iPhone Dev Team has released Redsn0w 0.9.6 beta 6 to help make it easier to try out SAM. Redsn0w 0.0.6 Beta 6 includes a new "Deactivate" option for the iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS -- Use this option **after** you've installed SAM. This will remove this normal patches redsn0w makes to lockdownd and let SAM take over. Soon, sbingner will make a button to do this within SAMPregs.

These are step by step instructions on how to use QuickPwn 2.1 for Microsoft Windows to unlock & jailbreak your first generation iPhone 2.1 2G/EDGE. REQUIRED:

• iTunes 8 installed (make sure to reboot). - Download iTunes

Note: If you have already upgraded your iPhone to firmware 2.1 skip step 2. Step One Create a folder on your desktop called Pwnage. Download the following files and place them in this Pwnage folder you just created on your desktop:

• QuickPwn 2.1
• iPhone 2.1 ipsw Download
• bl39.bin 3.9 BootLoader Download
• bl46.bin 4.6 BootLoader Download

Unzip the QuickPwn21-1.zip file inside the Pwnage folder. Step Two Launch iTunes and connect your iPhone to the computer via USB cable. Select your iPhone from the list of devices on the left side navigation bar. Now hold down shift while clicking the Restore button. Navigate to the Pwnage folder you created on your desktop and select the 2.1 firmware ipsw file. Double click the ipsw file or select it and click the Open button to proceed. Step Three Once iTunes has finished upgrading your iPhone to the 2.1 firmware you may launch QuickPwn 2.1 from the Pwnage folder you created on your desktop. Step Four Make sure you iPhone is still connected to the computer via USB cable then click the blue arrow to proceed. Step Five Click the Browse button to locate your iPhone firmware. Step Six Select the 2.1 firmware ipsw file from the Pwnage folder you created on your desktop then double click the ipsw file or select it then click the Open button. Step Seven QuickPwn will check to verify that the ipsw file is valid. After completetion of the verification, click the blue arrow button to proceed. Step Eight You can now select whether to Add Cydia, Add Installer, or Replace Boot Logos. Select the ones you would like to perform then click the clue arrow button.  Installing Cydia and Installer is highly recommended to enjoy the full jailbreak experience. Step Nine You will now be prompted to select your bootloader files. Click on the Browse button and select the 3.9 bootloader from the Pwnage folder you created on your desktop. Repeat this for the 4.6 bootloader file. Then click the blue arrow button to proceed. Step Ten QuickPwn will now ask you to confirm your iPhone is still connected via USB cable before it continues. Click the blue arrow button to proceed. Step Eleven QuickPwn will now automatically put your iPhone into recovery mode. Once its in recovery mode you will be prompted to: Hold the Home button for 5 seconds, Hold the Home and Power buttons for 10 seconds, then release the Power button and continuing holding the Home button until your iPhone is in DFU mode. Note: Pay attention and do exactly as it says Step Twelve Once QuickPwn detects your iPhone in DFU mode it will begin the jailbreaking process. Step Thirteen Once jailbreaking is complete QuickPwn will inform you that it haz Pwned! Your iPhone will then reboot and run BootNeuter. Let BootNeuter do it's thing, do not interupt it. This process will take about 5 minutes. Remember patience is a virtue. Your iPhone will reboot when it has completed.

Like Alias420 said, It's update day! The iPhone Dev Team have released PwnageTool 2.0.3 adding support for iPhone and iPod Touch firmware 2.0.2 5C1, it also has an updated Installer.app version (b6), and contains a new .de localization for the folks at Germany.

It's update day! The iPhone Dev Team has released it's latest version of QuickPwn for Windows coupled with poorlad's improved QuickPwn GUI. This update is labeled '150'. Mac user's you haven't been forgotten the dev team plans to release an update to PwnageTool today as well. We will make sure to bring that to as soon as it is released.

QuickPwn Windows doesnt work well with virtualization as there are some problems with the way USB resets are handled, so we wouldnt advise trying it, we have had reports of some success with VMWare Fusion 2.0 Beta 2, but this shouldnt be relied on, use PwnageTool instead, or wait for QuickPwn Mac. QuickPwn for Mac is being tested right now by a group of testers and well release this when it is ready for public beta (this wont be within the next 24 hours, but should be within the next week). There are no significant updates with regard to the 3G baseband unlock, most of us have been busy with real life, when we get any further well let you know.

The iphone-dev team has released PwnageTool 2.0.1 for folks who experienced problems with the earlier version. PwnageTool 2.0.1 changes:

• It auto-finds the bl39 and bl46 files better, if theyre on your computer
• It creates the ~/Library/iTunes/Device Support/ folder if not present, which should help with some 1600 errors people have been having.
• Many people have reported the PwnageTool not starting up at all (the icon never stops bouncing). This issue should be resolved now.
• The Sparkle AppCast URL is fixed in this version, so automatic updates should work for future releases.

If you are using an iPhone EDGE with Windows you can try using iTunes to install the PwnageTool 2.0 custom firmware I created. From the team:

Well be releasing a more official announcement soon, but we wanted to get the tool out there. We sincerely hope you enjoy using it as much as we enjoyed making it :) Update: Just to clear up some confusion over what this actually does: yes, it jailbreaks and unlocks older iPhones, and jailbreaks iPhone 3Gs and iPod Touches. We only support the 2.0 firmwares. Update: If you get Error 1600 from iTunes, try: mkdir ~/Library/iTunes/Device Support ; if that directory already exists, remove any files in it. Then re-run PwnageTool. Update: If DFU restores are giving you trouble, another route to pwned 2.0 for 1G owners is to use our first pwnage at 1.1.4. Once you are pwned there, you can do a normal recovery-mode restore to your custom 2.0 ipsw. BTW the iPhone does *not* need to be pre-pwned to be able to DFU-restore into a pwned ipsw — it needs to be pre-pwned only for normal recovery-mode restores of custom ipsws. Update: Mail application not working at 2.0? Please restore to your custom ipsw (you dont need to DFU restore if you are pwned, normal restore will work now too) but then select Set up as a new iPhone when iTunes asks. Your first sync will bring back all of your settings anyway.

A few new videos have surfaced today. First we have the video of an unlocked iPhone 3G, this isn't the software unlock that we're all anxiously awaiting. It requires the use of a SIM adapter much like the Hyper-card or Turbo SIM methods used on the first generation iPhone. Second up we've got another video released by the iPhone Dev Team showing a fully jailbroken iPhone 3G.

The iPhone 3G will spark an entirely new way of purchasing iPhones and unlocking them. Apple will now be requiring you to activate your 3G iPhone in store and sign up a contract with AT&T (O2 in the UK) as of July 11th if you want to get the new low prices. Fortunately there will be an option to buy the iPhone for a pre-paid plan which won't lock you into a contract with AT&T, the price of this iPhone has yet to be released. It appears unlockers will now have to pay a premium to unlock their phones. Link Engadget.

WARNING THIS IS ONLY FOR BETA TESTERS AND COULD CAUSE YOU TO RESTORE YOUR IPHONE/ITOUCH LOSING DATA Excited about the recently released Pwnage Tool? But don't have a mac to Pwn your iPhone on? Well, say hello to WinPwn! You'll be able to fully pwn your iPhone on your Windows PC. Although, a few features have been disabled until the final version has been released or till the dev feels it's stable enough for the public. Here is what the dev has to say:

This is winpwn-0.99.1.8BETA. I have disabled 2.0+ support since it's still buggy. Hopefully with people beta testing i will get all the bugs worked out within a few days and you will get a final release including 2.0+ support. You WILL be able to flash custom ipsw's made with mac pwnage if you wish to upgrade to 2.0 and can't wait for final winpwn. For now i have also disabled most of the custom options including the applications (installer is still there) and the unlock base band features. Once i'm happy it's stable i will enable those features for testing. I will post a more detailed breakdown of how it works (YES THAT IS QEMU) and why i choose to use qemu. You will require the iTunesMobileDevice.dll and you will have to put it inside the winpwn program files dir. iBooter support has been disabled since i haven't tested it yet. So you are stuck with iTunes for beta release. NOTE: YOU MAY NEED TO USE REGULAR RECOVERY MODE MANUALLY IF WINPWN DOESN'T DO IT ITSELF.

The DevTeam would like to announce the release of the OS X version of the PwnageTool application. The team (and especially Wizdaz) have been working hard to bring you this release in as short a time as possible. The plan (4 weeks ago) was to release a Mac tool only. This was decided because of the lack of reliable Mac filesystem tools on Windows, and the fact that the task of porting them would be too time consuming. With that in mind the genius that is cmw stepped up to the plate and offered his services to the DevTeam. He proposed to provide a tool that would give the same functionality and User Interface as the Mac tool. cmw has done an almost unthinkable task and ported the almost complete Pwnage Tool to Windows in a little under a week, and we would like to thank him for this unbelievable work. He is currently in the final test stages and hopefully this should be finished within the next 24 hours (but even he needs sleep and family time occasionally!)
