Apple To Allow Third Party Lightning Cables, After Approval

Submitted by Demonchild; October 08, 2012

When the iPhone 5 was first released, it was announced that Apple would be the sole provider of lightning cables for the phone. If you weren't going to deal with Apple's pricing on the cables, there's a ray of light for you. Apple has made changes to its "Made For iPad/iPhone/iPod" policies that will go into effect in November. The new policies will allow for third party manufacturers to start producing lightning cables for the iPhone 5. That's if the manufacturing facilities are approved by Apple beforehand.

The new approval process is part of Apple's attempt to cut down on the amount of unauthorized connector cables. When the first batch of third party cables appeared on Amazon, it was discovered that there was an authorization chip embedded in the cable, thus rendering it useless. At least with third party manufacturers able to get in, you won't have to pay the price that Apple charges for one little cable.
