Sony Sends Invites to "Destination PlayStation" Event February 25th -28th

Submitted by Christopher Groux; January 03, 2013

It's been quite a landmark year for the Sony brand. With the release of a brand new handheld and the seventh birthday of the PS3 just around the bend, it's clear that the company is still in a period that suggests strong growth. Many analysts have suggested that we will see a PlayStation 4 sometime in the next 364 days, but we never  thought it could be as soon as February. Regardless, if you were a member of the press, you may have received a note in your mailbox yesterday that promised access to "a first look at all the amazing new releases coming from Sony Computer Entertainment America Entertainment in 2013.”

As the kit shows, this supposed Destination PlayStation event will be happening on February 25th-28th in Scottsdale, Arizona for all of those invited. Obviously usually when companies invite the media to their house you've got to figure that something massive is about to happen. To date we haven't heard much about the supposed PS4 other than that dev kits have been sent out, so maybe this will be our first chance. Many have speculated that the console might go an entirely digital route leaving all games up for download, but that will all be conjecture until we get the facts. We have all loved our PS3, but with any luck maybe a new console will be on the way. Given that those lv0 keys are out and about I'm sure they can't wait to get that new console to market as fast as possible.

What are the chances we'll see the PS4 at this special event? I know my article kind of points to the fact we will, but I have this fear that I might be over-hyping a bit.

No way will Sony go entirely digital, they tried that with the PSPGo and failed. There are still large portions of the world that have download limits, not just in terms of how many gigs they can download, but also how fast! No way would Sony cut out so many possible customers by going all digital!

As for the press event, I think they WILL showcase or at least talk a little about the PS4...since it is what everyone will be there to see!

It seems likely that is the announcement of the PS4, so they will likely have a prototype of the final design on display with some tech demos (rubber ducky, anyoune?), but I doubt anything will be playable. E3 and especially Gamescon is when you're likely to see playable demos and production hardware.

I agree that download only is a non-starter for the Internet speed/cap reason (even with a fast pipe, do you want to wait hours for a 20-50 GB game?). Also, at least in the the US, there is a dependency on retailers to sell consoles and they would not tolerate being cut off by a download-only console, since there's money to be made on the software.
